Since 2001, Manuel Castells has been Research Professor of the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), where he chairs the Scientific Committee of IN3, the Research Institute of the UOC. Manuel Castells graduated in Public Law and Political Economy at the Paris- Sorbonne University in 1964. He received a doctorate in Sociology and a state doctorate in Human Sciences from the Paris-Sorbonne University. This main work is The Information Age: Economy, Society and Culture trilogy, originally published in English by Blackwell. His most recent publications are The Internet Galaxy, published in 2001 by Oxford University Press and The Information Society and the Welfare State. The Finnish Model (co-author), published by Oxford University Press in 2002. In 2003, Manuel Castells, together with Imma Tubella, is co-directing the Catalonia Internet Project, which is analysing on an empirical basis the interaction between information and communication technologies and society, business and institutions in Catalonia. Based on the sociological survey carried out, Manuel Castells, Imma Tubella and their collaborators are preparing the book La societat xarxa a Catalunya. This book will be published by Rosa dels Vents/Mondadori at the end of 2003. During 2003-2004, Manuel Castells is directing an international comparative research project on the network society, which will be presented in the book Comparative Studies on the Network Society, to be published in 2004 by Edward Elgar (London). This book will include the Catalan network society in its terms of international comparison. Since march 2001 she works for the Bertelsmann Foundation in Guetersloh as Project Manager E- Government. Her main fields of activity include the possibilities of restructuring and modernising administration by means of digital media and the support the new media can give to democratic development in politics, administration and non- governmental-organisations. In this field the Bertelsmann Foundation has published several papers such as the study "Balanced E-Government" and, recently, a book under the same title. Currently, several research projects conducted by the Bertelsmann Foundation are focusing on specific questions aroused by the „Balanced E-Government" study such as financing E-Government and the transfer and distribution of E-Government knowledge among local governments. Carolin Welzel has an M.A. in History and Political Sciences as well as a French Licence in History. After graduating she started working for politik-digital.de, an independent platform for politics and new media in Berlin. As Director Research for politik-digital.de she conducted various studies in co-operation with Accenture and the German Federal Agency for Political Education among others. Lluís Olivella (Barcelona, 1947) is an industrial engineer. He worked in the Information and Documentation Consortium of Catalonia until 1975 and in 1976 received his doctorate in Information Technology. He was head of the Computing Centre of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) until 1983 and professor of Operative Research at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and at the Faculty of Information Technology of the UPC. Since 1985 he has been Head of Municipal Computer Services, first as Director of the Municipal Computer Centre and since 1995 as Director of the Municipal Information Technology Institute of Barcelona City Council. Steve Cisler Steve Cisler is a librarian and telecommunications consultant who has been involved with community networks since 1986. In the 1990's while at Apple Computer, Inc, he made grants to libraries and communities that were building Free Nets and other community networks. He convened two community networking conferences, Ties That Bind, in 1994 and 1995, that brought together networkers from the United States, Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Mexico, and Germany. He headed a project to free up unlicensed wireless spectrum (5 GHz band) for public use. In 1996 he helped found what is now the Association For Community Networking, and since then has been active in the rural United States and in Latin America to help grow community-based ICT projects. Dr. Pekka Himanen Dr. Pekka Himanen is the Director of the Berkeley Center for Information Society and the author of "The Hacker Ethic" (2001, translated into fifteen languages) and "The Information Society and the Welfare State: The Finnish Model" (2002, with Manuel Castells). Himanen obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Helsinki and has since carried out research, and lectured extensively, in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Among his many adviser positions, Himanen has advised the Finnish government, parliament, and President on the information society." Stephen R. du Mont Mr. Du Mont currently is a Corporate Vice President at Cisco Systems, Inc., leading the Global Public Sector Internet Solutions Team. He is also serving as Chairman of several international technology companies, located in the U.S. and Europe. Prior to joining Cisco, he was involved in both the private and the public sectors, in a consulting capacity, and has filled the management leadership role of change agent, for several transforming enterprises. He spent many years with a major international management consulting firm, supporting clients in over 50 countries and evolving to the level of Worldwide Managing Director. This provided opportunities to lead technology implementation engagements for all levels of government entities, as well as for commercial enterprises. After providing consulting support to the U.S. Department of Treasury, he was offered a Presidential appointment as Assistant Secretary, responsible for Information Technology, but elected instead to accept a private sector management position.
