Many scientific studies conducted by prestigious colleges and research institutes have found that motivating and honoring creative innovators is a common managerial practice in companies that adopted the innovation track. Consequently, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai’s Crown Prince and Chairman of the Executive Council has announced the establishment of Hamdan bin Mohamed Award of Project Management. The award was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Marine Club, during the opening ceremony of the 2nd Edition of Dubai International Project Management Forum (DIPMF) . RTA H.E. Mattar Al Tayer organized this Forum in cooperation with Dubai Electricity & Water Authority Director General and Chairman (DEWA), along with Emaar, and the Project Management Institute (PMI). of the Board of Executive Directors Under the slogan “Project Management Supports Innovation,” the Forum featured the presence of creativity and innovation within all of the events and lectures presented by leading entrepreneurs, executives and academics from around the globe. “Innovation is a system that integrates companies with their policies and procedures, and individuals with their creativity, skills, and competences,” Said H.H. Dubai’s Crown Prince, “to ensure the sustainability of this system. We have to establish Innovation Management concepts.” “Innovation is important, yet it is more important to develop prototypes that would build a sustainable innovation system among companies.”

Hamdan bin Mohamed Award of Project Management is to be the first of its kind in , with a total of AED2 Million ($550,000) dedicated for winners. This award aims to discover, reward, encourage, promote, and enable innovation in Project Management through developing a systematic way for creative and innovative project management. In addition, this Award will provide a wide database of best practices, prototypes of working in project management, an innovative ideas exchange platform, and a base for training programs on project management skills.

The award targets experts and specialists in the project management field, along with individuals, teams, or companies that specialize in Project Management, Program Management and and/or Project Portfolio Management. Winning ideas will be selected according to the following criteria: innovative ideas in any stage of the Project life cycle, innovation in the management practices and methodology and innovation in using technology. The need for the Dubai Tram project was dictated by the changing layout and the investment map in the area rendering it of high tourist significance. Through an international consultant, the RTA carried out a comprehensive study which concluded that the population density of the area will rise upon occupation of buildings constructed to 60,000 persons per square kilometer, whereas the average density in the current urban areas of Dubai city is 3,000 persons per square km i.e. the area will have 20 times the population density of urban Dubai districts. Accordingly, the number of trips generated from the area will be 64,000 trips during peak hour; which is close to the total number of trips generated from the entire Deira. Moreover, there is a limited space for right-of-way in the area coupled with a lack of car parks & entry/exit points and huge congestions even though the occupation rates were not full at that time; which is an indicator of even more congestions looming in future. The study concluded that the area needs integrated solutions including improvements of roads network & junctions and the development of an integrated mass transit system linked with Dubai Metro and .

Control Center

The Tram’s control center enables full control of the daily operation of the tram service. It is fitted with mega screens linked with more than 800 cameras on board the tram coaches, at stations and along the route as well as certain junctions where the tram and vehicle movements overlap. The Center monitors the movement of trains along the route and controls the service frequency. It also monitors the CCTV cameras, light signals along the tram route, besides controlling communication systems, power transformers, and power feed system to coaches and stations. It also supervises the safety systems such as fire, ventilation and air-conditioning of coaches & stations, besides ensuring the safe functioning of doors, brakes and motors of each individual train.
