  • Pope Advances Sainthood Causes of Marianne Cope, Kateri Tekakwitha
Pope advances sainthood causes of Marianne Cope, Kateri Tekakwitha VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI advanced the sainthood causes of Blessed Marianne Cope of Molokai and Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha. He also formally recognized the martyrdom of 64 victims of the Spanish Civil War and advanced the causes of 18 other men and women. During a meeting Dec. 19 with Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes, the pope signed the decrees recognizing the miracles needed for the canonizations of Blesseds Marianne and Kateri. Before a date is set for the canonization ceremonies, there must be an “ordinary public consistory,” a formal ceremony opened and closed with prayer, during which cardinals present in Rome express their support for the pope’s decision to create new saints. Blessed Marianne, who worked as a teacher and hospital administrator in New York, spent the last 30 years of her life ministering on the Hawaiian island of Molokai to those with leprosy. She died on the island in 1918 at age 80 and was beatified in St. Peter’s Basilica in 2005. Blessed Kateri, known as the Lily of the Mohawks, was born to a Christian Algonquin mother and a Mohawk father in 1656 in upstate New York along the Hudson River. She was baptized by a Jesuit missionary in 1676 when she was 20, and she died in Canada four years later. In June 1980, she became the first Native American to be beatified. Pope Benedict also recognized miracles attributed to the intercession of five other people, who now can be declared saints.

Mk 10:45) Dear Brother Bishops, Dear brothers and sisters! Today the Church listens again to these words of Jesus, spoken by the Lord during his journey to Jerusalem, where he was to accomplish the mystery of his passion, death and resurrection. They are words which enshrine the meaning of Christ’s mission on earth, marked by his sacrifice, by his total self-giving. On this third Sunday of October, on which we celebrate World Mission Sunday, the Church listens to them with special attention and renews her conviction that she should always be fully dedicated to serve mankind and the Gospel, after the example of the One who gave 2 himself up even to the sacrifice of his life. I extend warm greetings to all of you who fill Saint Peter’s Square, especially the official delegations and the pilgrims who have come to celebrate the seven new saints. I greet with affection the Cardinals and Bishops who, during these days, are taking part in the Synodal Assembly on the New Evangelization. The coincidence between this ecclesiastical meeting and World Mission Sunday is a happy one; and the word of God that we have listened to sheds light on both subjects.

  • SPIRIT THROUGH TIME a History of the Spirituality of the Society of Jesus José García De Castro Valdés SJ Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Madrid (Spain)
SPIRIT THROUGH TIME A History of the Spirituality of the Society of Jesus José García de Castro Valdés SJ Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Madrid (Spain) When the Society of Jesus was founded by Pope Paul III1, a new trend in spirituality arose inside the Catholic Church. Even though the followers and the first companions of Ignatius of Loyola were never known or never called “Ignatians”2, this new spirituality is nowadays recognized as “Ignatian Spirituality”, that is, a new path, a new method to search for God proposed by Ignatius and his first Companions3 and mainly fixed in the text of the Spiritual Exercises and the Constitutions of the Society of Jesus. In order to understand the origins and development of this spirituality, and how this movement of the Holy Spirit has reached us, we will try to follow the historical development of the Society of Jesus. It is a long period of 475 years full of life, including a wide variety of experiences all around the world and in many different fields of human culture. The more we approach the history of the Society of Jesus, the more we realize how wide and deep the contribution of the Jesuits was to build the history and culture of Western tradition. Because of the new features of this new congregation founded by Ignatius and his companions, the Jesuits could move around the world and were allowed to preach the Gospel through many different means, which they called “ministries”4. They did not adopt a single specific work (healing, education, preaching…) as their charismatic mission.
