Saint Catherine Laboure entered the Daughters of Charity in 1830. When she was a novice, the Blessed Mother appeared to her several times in the Motherhouse Chapel. The Blessed Mother was standing on a globe with streams of light coming from her hands. Around her were the words, “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” Sister Catherine was told that a medal was to be made of this picture. Soon, because of all the wonderful graces obtained by those who wore the medal, it was called the “Miraculous Medal.” The Vincentian Family has always been rooted in a special devotion to Mary, and the Miraculous Medal is one of our treasured gifts. Sister Catherine devoted her life to the service of the poor elderly in silence and humility for forty-six years. She is known as the of silence, as she kept her secret of being the one who saw Mary until her death. She was a “Let us ask the Lord, each of us, for woman of profound prayer and service. From Fr. Bill: From Fr. Bill:

I’ve been asked many times what I like the most about my “retirement” here in this wonderful parish of St. Mary/ St. Joseph. I’m not sure what these questioners think I’m going to say ..... but I know most are surprised when I answer: “Sunday mornings in St. Mary’s Hall.” Now there are many reasons for that answer including, of course, the great food each week; for me, however, it is simply the opportunity to interact with the parishioners who gather together there each week. Many of the topics that I write about for our monthly bulletins had their beginnings in those conversations on Sunday mornings – including this month’s topic – the Jubilee Year which the Church universal is now observing. I was asked: “What’s it all about?” Jubilee Years are not something new in the Church; there have been twenty-nine of them, beginning with the first in the year 1300 called by Pope Boniface XIII. He stressed that the first Jubilee was to be a special time of joy and pardon. In both that Jubilee and the twenty-eight which have followed, the emphasis has been on both the Sacrament of Confession and on the individual Christians’ truly pardoning and forgiving others for past offenses. The last Jubilee Year was in the year 2000; like Pope Boniface, Pope St. John Paul II emphasized forgiveness as its theme. After mentioning past faults of the Church [including the , the and transgressions against Jews, women and minorities] Pope John Paul said: “We humbly ask for forgiveness for the part that each of us with his or her behaviors has played in such evils thus contributing to disrupting the face of the church. At the same time, as we confess our sins let us forgive the faults committed by others towards us.” made a similar emphasis when he announced our current extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy which began on December 8, 2015 [a day which was both the feast of the and the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the ] and will end on November 20, 2016 [the Feast of Christ the King]. His Holiness emphasized that this Jubilee would be referred to as the “Year of Mercy” in which the Church and the faithful would both thank our good God for His great mercy which allowed His Son to become man to redeem us and observe a special time to forgive others for their offenses. Past Holy Years emphasized the Holy Doors in Rome where the faithful could receive special graces. For the current Jubilee, Pope Francis asked each diocese to open Holy Doors, to which pilgrims can journey. These doors represent the compassion, love, mercy, and consolation of God’s working in our lives. In our Archdiocese, Cardinal DiNardo designated eight such doors which would serve as pilgrimage sites during this Holy Year: St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica ( Parish, 2011 Church St, Galveston TX 77550) Co‑Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (1111 St. Joseph Parkway, Houston) St. Bernadette Church (15500 El Camino Real, Houston TX, 77062) Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (2405 Navigation Blvd, Houston TX 77003) Our Lady of Lavang Church (12320 Old Foltin Rd, Houston TX, 77086) St. Francis of Assisi Church (5100 Dabney St, Houston TX, 77026) St. Ignatius Church (7810 Cypresswood Dr, Spring TX, 77379) St. Theresa Church (705 St. Theresa Blvd, Sugar Land TX, 77498) Pilgrims who pass through the ‘Door of Mercy' at any of these churches may receive the Jubilee Indulgence for oneself or for someone who has died. The Holy Father said that entering through a Holy Door must be linked with saying the or Apostles’ Creed, praying for the Holy Father and his intentions, receiving the Sacrament of Confession and attending Mass where one receives the Eucharist. Pope Francis also published the following prayer for the Jubilee: “Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: ‘If you knew the gift of God!’ You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with His anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.” There is still almost a month left to be a part of this Holy Year; I pray many will participate.

If time permits between those quilts, we will quilt member’s quilt for a nominal fee. If you do not know how to quilt, we will do our best to help you out. We all have opinions! TH Final NOV. 17 “COME TO THE STABLE”

Movie Time! What a great way to begin our holiday season! This wholesome and heartwarming 1949 film is based on the story of the two French who founded the of Regina Laudis in 1947 in Bethlehem, CT. and star as two French Nuns who arrive unannounced in the small New England town of Bethlehem. They were determined to build a Children's Hospital (as opposed to an Abbey). They seek this to fulfill a promise they made to God when He saved a similar infirmary in war torn Normandy. To build it, the sisters recruit various townspeople, negotiate with a bookie for the land and contend with a songwriter who is against the project. An Amazon review : " This movie is a simple, wonderful story about innocence and blind faith ... It is a feel good movie of the first magnitude, and in my opinion, one of the most beautiful films ever made." Come To the Stable was nominated for 7 . To watch a trailer go to smsj.org and on the banner going across the top of the website you can push click to preview. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There will be two showings: 10AM and 7PM, NOVEMBER 17TH. You may bring your own snacks and drinks. Popcorn, tea and coffee will be served. Come early to get yourselves prepared to be in your seats for the movie to begin at 10AM and 7PM sharp. If you have any questions contact Fred and/or Freddie Seale at: 936-582-7095 or [email protected]
