Academic research, scientific cooperation, academic extension programmes, visiting professors (VITEM I - RN27 and RN24) a) General rules

VITEM I based on Normative Resolution 27/2018 (Portuguese only):

This type of visa may be granted to researchers, scientists and visiting professors – with no employment relationship with a Brazilian institution – for the purposes of academic research, scientific cooperation, academic extension programmes, and teaching, as long as the stay is set to last longer than 90 days.

If the stay does not exceed 90 days, a Visitor Visa (VIVIS) must be requested.

VITEM I – RN27 holders are strictly forbidden to practise any paid work in Brazil, but are allowed to receive payments from the government, a Brazilian employer or a private entity for the purposes of daily allowances, compensation or travel expenses, as well as to receive cash prizes in competitions in the science, technology and innovation fields.

VITEM I based on Normative Resolution 24/2018 (Portuguese only):

This type of visa may be granted to researchers, scientists and visiting professors – with employment relationship with a Brazilian institution – regardless of the intended length of stay.

VITEM I – RN24 applications are subject to prior approval by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice and National Security. The process must be initiated in Brazil, by the sponsoring institution (on behalf of the applicant), with submission of the pertinent application and supporting documentation to that Ministry. Once the procedure in Brazil is concluded and approved, the authorisation will be transmitted to the Consulate via the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Only then will the applicant be able to proceed and lodge the visa application itself.

Please note: a VITEM I does not apply to study / research exchange purposes (except postdoctoral degree studies). For activities involving academic qualification such as participation in "sandwich" and university collaboration programmes, carrying out part of one’s master's / doctor's degree research, doing one's compulsory undergraduate / postgraduate study module abroad (commonly referred to as "year abroad"), one must obtain a Student Visa (VITEM IV) instead.

Foreign nationals who are already in Brazil can apply for residence permit for the purposes of academic research, scientific cooperation, academic extension programmes or teaching directly with the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (there is no need to return to the UK to get a VITEM I).

a) General rules

Visitor Visas (VIVIS) are aimed at those travelling to Brazil for maximum stays of up to 90 days, without the intention to establish residence, for the purposes of journalistic coverage, news reporting or filming (click here to check which other travel purposes it applies to).

With the exception of journalistic productions, in case of audiovisual shootings / recordings (i.e. advertising, marketing or commercial pieces, as well as the making of documentaries), foreign crews must obtain prior authorisation issued by the Brazilian National Agency of Cinema – ANCINE – in partnership with a Brazilian co-producer.

Telephone number: + 55 21 3037-6032

If activities will be conducted in indigenous lands or in environmental protection areas, the producers must obtain prior authorisation from the competent bodies.

Please note: rather than a Visitor Visa, a Temporary Visa (VITEM V based on Normative Resolution No. 17) applies to news correspondents from newspapers, magazines, radio and television broadcasters, or press agencies.

Entry of equipment: in case it is necessary to take photographic and/or filming equipment into Brazil, it is recommended that crews obtain an "ATA Carnet" to be presented to customs authorities. This is an international customs document, accepted in Brazil, which permits tax- free and duty-free temporary export and import of goods for up to one year. Click here to obtain further information about "ATA Carnets".

Foreign nationals from countries with which Brazil holds visa exemption agreements benefit from Visitor Visa (VIVIS) waiver. Click here to check whether you require a VIVIS or not.

Family reunion (on the grounds of stable union) (VITEM XI)

a) General rules

Based on the Interministerial Ordinance No. 12/2018 and specific instructions from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Brazilian legal system recognises the stable union of either same sex couples or opposite sex couples as a family entity. The rules regulating stable unions of opposite sex couples are provided for in articles 1,723 to 1,727 of the Brazilian Civil Code, and also apply to same sex couples, as decided by the Brazilian Supreme Court.

According to the UK legal system, opposite sex couples can only get married and same sex couples can either get married or form a civil partnership, which is the only relationship legally recognised in the UK whose effects are similar to those of the Brazilian stable union.

Foreign nationals who are already in Brazil can apply for residence on the grounds of stable union directly with the Federal Police. Therefore, if the applicant is in Brazil to get married or to officialise the stable union, there will be no need to return to the UK to get a visa. Foreign nationals who are already in Brazil can apply for residence permit for the purposes of study / exchange directly with the Federal Police.

Student visa holders are permitted to undertake paid work, as long as the working hours are compatible with their course load. Details and clarifications must be requested to the Federal Police.
