Lawrence: The Enduring Appeal and the Enigma of Lawrence of Arabia.” II. Research Problem World War I is becoming increasingly distant and remote. Although the conflict on the Western Front in Europe was one of the cataclysmic events of the twentieth century, few would be able to offer more than a sentence about major military leaders: Foch, Haig, Ludendorff, Pershing. In all likelihood, people know best the common foot soldier Paul Baumer, the fictional protagonist of Erich Marie Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front. Yet in the Middle East, in a conflict of the British with the Turks often disparaged as a sideshow, emerged a leader internationally known: Thomas Edward Lawrence, Lawrence of Arabia. In 1919, the American journalist and entrepreneur Lowell Thomas opened “With Allenby in Palestine and Lawrence in Arabia,” a theatrical presentation of lecture, film, and photographs eventually seen by some four million people, including an array of British military and political leaders and Lawrence himself. The interest has continued unabated to the present day, with Michael Korda’s 2010 biography Hero: The Life and Legend of Lawrence of Arabia1 holding a place on best- seller lists for weeks. Why has there been such a sustained interest in Lawrence? More specifically, how has the focus of these works varied over the decades? His death in that conflict meant that this was a career that lasted barely twenty years; however it comprised a large range of creative endeavours. Although all these facets of Whistler’s career are touched upon, the main focus is on his work in murals and the fields of advertising and commercial design. The thesis goes beyond the remit of a purely biographical stance and places Whistler’s career in context by looking at the contemporary art world in which he worked, and the private, commercial and public commissions he secured. In doing so, it aims to provide a more comprehensive account of Whistler’s achievement than has been afforded in any of the existing literature or biographies. This deeper examination of the artist’s practice has been made possible by considerable amounts of new factual information derived from the Whistler Archive and other archival sources. -

He was recognised as a superb trade finisher, and Marianne Tidcombe has confirmed that he actually executed most of Sarah Prideaux's bindings from the mid-1890s. The grueling, seemingly endless years of World War I brought a quick education in devastation and futility to hundreds of thousands of young British men, including those who grew up in privilege. One of these was the gay "war poet," Siegfried Sassoon. Brought up in the leisured life of a country gentleman, Sassoon enlisted in the military just as the war was beginning. His poetry reflects the evolution of his attitudes towards war, beginning with a vision of combat as an exploit reflecting glory and nobility, and ending with muddy, bloody realism and bitter recrimination towards those who profited from the destruction of young soldiers. Sassoon came of age during a sort of golden period of Western homosexual intelligentsia, and his friends and lovers were some of the best-known writers, artists, and thinkers of the period. Born on September 8, 1886 in Weirleigh, England, in the county of Kent, Siegfried Louvain (some give his middle name as Loraine, or Lorraine) Sassoon was the son of a Sephardic Jewish father and a Catholic mother. His parents divorced when young Siegfried was five, and his father died of tuberculosis within a few years. While still a teenager, Sassoon experienced his first crush on another boy, a fellow student at his grammar school. He studied both law and history at Clare College, Cambridge, but did not receive a degree. He did, however, meet other gay students at Cambridge, and would later count among his friends such writers associated with Cambridge as his older contemporary E. -

Af- ter this event, poetic trends seem to move away from odes Mto courageous sacrifice and protection of the homeland, toward bitter or grief-stricken verses on the horror and pointless suffering of the conflict. This is especially true of poetry written by soldier poets, many of whom were young, English men with a strong grounding in Classical literature and languages from their training in the British public schooling system. -

chapter 20 “The Preservation and Safeguarding of the Amenities of the Holy City without Favour or Prejudice to Race or Creed”: The Pro-Jerusalem Society and Ronald Storrs, 1917–1926 Roberto Mazza The Beginnings in the Middle of Transition On September 6, 1918, twelve individuals met at the residence of the military governor of Jerusalem.1 The room was filled with tension as the governor was trying to win the confidence of those who were still skeptical and suspicious of British rule. A few months earlier, in December 1917, General Allenby had led the British troops into Jerusalem, ending Ottoman rule in the city and pav- ing the way for greater British success in the region. Though the conquest of Jerusalem proved to be a relatively easy military task, the control of the city required a larger set of skills. All aspects of the conquest and the takeover had been carefully planned in London. While Allenby’s military operations were unfolding in Palestine, the Foreign Office and War Office were discuss- ing the future asset of Jerusalem. Most of the policies adopted in relation to Jerusalem were a reflection of wartime agreements, including the Sykes–Picot Agreement and Balfour Declaration. British policy makers, starting with Mark Sykes, were aware of and sensitive to the tensions between the different reli- gious communities in Jerusalem. Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone. -

III N. 7 2014 Lawrence of Arabia (1962): A Tragic Hero in an Ever-Lasting Quest “I loved you, so I drew these tides of man into my hands and wrote my will across the sky in stars to earn you Freedom, the seven pillared worthy house (…).” (T.E. Lawrence, dedication to S. A. in Seven Pillars of Wisdom) The film Lawrence of Arabia, directed by David Lean and released in 1962, is based on the figure of T. E. Lawrence, the legendary English officer who led Arabs in their struggle against the Turks during World War I. Having attended Oxford from 1906 to 1909, where he studied archaeology, he first travelled to the Middle East on scholarships to study the influence of the Crusaders on modern architecture. There he stayed for months, making Arab friends and learning their language. Later on, at the outbreak of the war of 1914, when England allied with France against Germany and Turkey, he was dispatched to Cairo, in Egypt, to work for the Bureau of Arab Affairs, and became involved in the Revolt of the Arabs against the Turks in 1916. Meanwhile, he was assigned a position as liaison officer to Prince Feisal, and took part in military operations, blowing up Turkish trains and taking the city of Aqaba. In 1918, under orders from General Edward Allenby, he led an army of Arab tribes to coordinate with the British forces in their attack and capture of Damascus.
