The New Relationship Trust Foundation (NRT Foundation) is the largest Indigenous-run education charity in British Columbia (BC). Since 2008, the New Relationship Trust and NRT Foundation have awarded 2,025 scholarships and bursaries totaling $10.6 million in post-secondary financial aid. By investing in Indigenous post-secondary education, the NRT Foundation is building the capacity of our communities, enhancing employment opportunities for graduates, and creating the skilled work force that will enable BC to meet its future economic and social development needs. The two primary objectives of the NRT Foundation are to endow $30 million for a perpetual education fund, while at the same time continuing the scholarship and bursary commitment to student education. 4 2017–18 SCHOLARSHIP AND BURSARY AWARD RECIPIENTS 2017–18 SCHOLARSHIP AND BURSARY AWARD RECIPIENTS 5 Scholarships and Bursaries Funding The NRT Post-Secondary Education Scholarship initiative was launched in 2007, with almost 100 Since 2007, the New Relationship Trust, NRT Foundation and funding partners have contributed more than awards granted at the Undergraduate, Masters and Doctorate levels in the first year. $10.6 million to support the post-secondary education of First Nations people in BC. Scholarship and Bursary awards to date. Indigenous students have historically been disadvantaged and underrepresented at all levels of post-secondary education. Investing in Indigenous education achieves a profound impact in addressing these disparities: • Non-Indigenous Canadians are 5 times more likely to have a university degree than Indigenous people. 2025 • 50% of Indigenous people have some form of post-secondary education compared to 66% of non-Indigenous people. • Indigenous people are the fastest growing population in BC, creating a growing demand for employment opportunities and academic financial aid. Environmental Scan 2019 INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH Executive summary The Environmental Scan 2019 considers the demographic and economic context, government priorities, and trends in post-secondary education that might relate to Langara’s mission as Canada’s pathways college. There are three parts in the Environmental Scan 2019: the first discusses broader trends in the Vancouver area and British Columbia as a whole; the second discusses trends specific to Langara and other post-secondary institutions in the province; and the third discusses Langara’s internal enrolment trends and ongoing initiatives. Broad external trends The largest group of Langara students are in the 18- to 24-year-old age range and live in the College’s service area, made up of the Vancouver, Richmond, and Burnaby school districts. While the populations of the College service area and of BC as a whole continue to grow, we have seen decreases in the population aged 18-24, a trend that is reflected in decreasing numbers of grade 12 students in local high schools. This decrease is expected to reverse by the end of the 2020s; meanwhile, recent trends suggest Metro Vancouver will continue to see new residents arrive from other provinces and from outside Canada. Strong economic growth in BC has caused the unemployment rate to drop to its lowest level since the 2008/09 recession. With the lowest unemployment rate and the highest job vacancy rate in Canada, BC is in need of skilled workers; however, the availability of work might be an incentive to delay post-secondary training. Over the next decade, more than three-quarters of new job openings will require some level of post-secondary education.

  • See the Potential
See the potential ANNUAL REPORT Facts & Figures YMCA of Greater Vancouver imagineourYMCA.ca Imagine Our YMCA This year is all about potential. We launched an awareness campaign declaring that at the YMCA, we never met a kid whose potential we couldn’t see. And that includes kids of all ages—including you. Hurry on over to ImagineOurYMCA.ca to see our updated online annual report, the ad, and the first video in a series featuring people that credit the YMCA of Greater Vancouver in helping them to reach their potential. There, you will meet Sofia, a young mom, that will blow your socks off. She is just one of the 108,000 people we were lucky to know in 2013. www.imagineourymca.ca Message from the Chair & CEO We can see the potential. 2013 was yet another year of record growth for our YMCA. We reached out and supported more than 108,000 people through a growing collection of programs, sites and facilities in 178 locations. 64% of these people were kids. This is critical as trends show that this is the first generation of children in modern history to inherit a lower life expectancy than their parents. Healthy kids are the foundation and future for building healthy communities. In 2013, we helped 69,444 kids grow healthier, stronger and more confident, supporting them in realizing their potential through meaningful engagement with their family, friends and peers. But we don’t stop with kids. Our Y recognizes that healthy kids can’t exist without healthy adult role models and active and engaged communities.

That’s what our 2014 awareness campaign was all about and what the year was all about for our team: telling people the Y is here to help parents and caregivers raise kids to be the best they can be. So this year’s report emulates that campaign and the spirit of potential– the ability within all of us to reach for more and live our healthiest and happiest life. FactsFiguresAR_2014_20150511.indd 2 2015-05-11 2:52 PM Message from the Chair & CEO We never met a kid whose potential we couldn’t see. All of us have a drive inside for more. Unrealized, untapped and not-yet-known. It’s our potential. Reaching our potential takes courage, people who care, opportunities, experiences to shape us and a safe space to grow and learn. Reaching our potential doesn’t happen by accident. And that’s what 2014 was all about for our association: intentionally challenging ourselves to be better. We not only designed our programs and services to help children and families reach their potential, but we also strived to reach our potential as an organization—as a unified team seeking to make a tangible impact by helping people live healthier, happier lives. We set new records in 2013 and we well surpassed those milestones yet again in 2014.
