True Patriot Love Invites You to the Next One on November 10,2009 CANADA HAS HAD MANY DEFINING MOMENTS IN HISTORY. TRUE PATRIOT LOVE INVITES YOU TO THE NEXT ONE ON NOVEMBER 10,2009 October 1940 One last goodbye for dad in New Westminster, BC May 1917 Elated Canadian soldiers returning after capturing Vimy Ridge. Dear friends of our Canadian Military and their families, Canada has had many defining moments throughout history. These moments include our Military efforts in the First and SecondWorldWars, momentous scientific advances and personal sacrifices.Today, the next defining moments in our history are being written on the world stage by the proud and courageous men and women of our armed forces. I can tell you from first hand knowledge and experience these are not strangers fighting and serving in some faraway land. These are real men and real women from real towns and cities across this great nation. They are the sons and daughters of your neighbours, friends and colleagues. They are extraordinary Canadians who on a daily basis walk into harm’s way to protect our freedom and the rights of others. They have families who wait, worry and care for them when they come home, and mourn them deeply when they do not.I believe the men and women of our military and their families are true Canadian heroes. I’m writing to you today because Even Heroes Need Heroes.I founded the Military Families Fund (MFF) to provide rehabilitation, education and financial assistance to soldiers and their families when it’s needed most.As founder of MFF and former General of Canada’s armed forces,I personally invite you to be a part of Canada’s next defining moment,by supporting the Military Families Fund and attending theTrue Patriot LoveTribute Dinner. It promises to be a night to remember at a time when need is great. History is being written by the men and women of our military and their families as you read this. You have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of it.I invite you to join me in answering that call.I look forward to the pleasure of meeting you and shaking your hand on November 10,2009. Our signature initiative is our annualTrue Patriot LoveTribute Dinner,a benefit which celebrates our soldiers’selfless service, raises awareness of the cause, and raises funds for various programs through the generous donations of our invited guests. The funds raised at our inaugural event held inToronto on November 10,2009 will support the Military Families Fund. About Military Families Fund The Military Families Fund (MFF) was founded in April 2007 by General (Ret’d) Rick Hillier. The purpose of the MFF is to quickly step in when the government is unable to assist military families faced with unforeseen and often immediate needs as a result of service, including rehabilitation, education and financial assistance in the case of injury or loss of life. The MFF enhances and complements, but does not replace, existing public and non-public programs. The Fund bridges the gaps by providing for special-case needs of military members and their families with speed and flexibility not always available through the traditional programs. The Fund continues to grow through the generous contributions of Canadians, corporations and other organizations. Taking their name from the distinctive towers built during the nineteenth century to defend Kingston, Ontario, these papers cover a wide range of topics and issues in foreign and defence policy, and in the study of international peace and security. How governments make decisions in times of crisis is a topic which has long fascinated both theorists and practitioners of international politics. Michael Manulak’s study of the Canadian government’s decision to take part in NATO’s use of force against Serbia in the spring of 1999 deploys a novel social-scientific method to dissect the process whereby that decision was made. In that respect this paper descends from a long line of inquiry going back to the 1960s and the complex flow-charts designed by “scientific” students of foreign policy.

Hojo Code The Martello Papers This is the eighteenth in a series of security studies published over the past several years by the Queen’s University Centre for International Relations (QCIR), under the general title of the Martello Papers. “From Ottawa to Sarajevo” is a detailed, empirical examination of Canadian participation in UN peacekeeping efforts in the former Yugoslavia between 1992 and 1995, written by a US Air Force officer, Major Dawn Hewitt, who served as Visiting Defence Fellow at the Centre during the 1996-97 academic year. Peacekeeping, by all accounts, has become increasingly complex since the end- ing of the Cold War, and as Major Hewitt’s monograph reveals, nowhere have those complexities and frustrations been more apparent than in the former Yugo- slavia.

  • Escaping Binarism: the Bosnian War in the Canadian Imagination

Two and one-half years later, in December 1995, Deny Flight officially ended after an almost continuous 970-day aerial presence constituting over 100,000 aircraft sorties. In that time, NATO aircraft dropped more than 3,000 bombs while participating in combat operations for the first time in alliance history. Deny Flight’s initial mission was to enforce a UN Security Council mandated no-fly zone over Bosnia. This mission expanded in the ensuing months to include close air support when requested for UN protection forces (UNPROFOR) on the ground and to deter Serb aggression against six UN-designated safe areas.

Remembering Yugoslavia: The Canadian Military’s Service in the Balkans. Submitted to: Dr. Zimmerman Submitted by: Courtney Yanta V00774939 Date: March 31, 2016 Course: HSTR 426 1 Introduction: The collapse of Yugoslavia resulted in long wars and ethnic cleansings which the international community struggled to respond to. The historiography has focused on the violence in the region, the underlying political tensions which led to the conflicts, while some of the available literature has looked at the role of Canadian peacekeepers in the former Yugoslavia under the banner of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR). While the available sources provide a basic understanding of the conflict and the role of Canadians in the region, it largely ignores the non-combatant role of the international community and their presence in the region after the violence had ceased. This essay will look to oral history to fill in these gaps through the use of interviews conducted with Master Corporal Tyson King 1, Sergeant Ryan Gow and Master Warrant Officer Tamara Featherstone. These interviews discuss the Canadian presence in the former Yugoslavia and emphasize the role the military played in post-conflict recovery, humanitarian efforts, and the personal and professional difficulties the interviewees experienced while serving in the region. The interviews also provide insight on the ways in which the wars affected Canadians who served overseas, specifically Tyson King’s discussion of his struggles with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This essay is divided into three parts. The first explores King’s role with UNPROFOR and his experiences in the Medak Pocket. The essay then focuses on the interviews with Ryan Gow and Tammy Featherstone which speak to the role of the Canadian military in the post-conflict recovery of the region.

  • Protest Letter Regarding Outrageous Mackenzie and Bissett Statements
Protest letter on behalf of the Institute for Research Genocide, Canada (IGC), Congress of North American Bosniaks (CNAB), representing the interests of Bosnian American and Bosnian Canadian citizens, the Advisory Council for Bosnia and Herzegovina (ACBH), Bosnian American Genocide Institute and Education Center (BAGI) as well as the Institute for Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Bosniak Cultural Association, Bosnia and Herzegovina April 23, 2012 Twenty years on, denial of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes against the Bosniak population continues to be perpetrated and this time it comes from the former Yugoslavian Ambassador James Bissett and retired Major General Lewis MacKenzie. On April 11th, they sat down with CTV news to discuss the 20th anniversary of the Siege of Sarajevo.(1) To no avail, the discussion about the longest siege in modern history did not happen. Instead the conversation was focused on denying and justifying the atrocities committed by the Serbian Army by attempting to place the blame on the United States for not preventing the conflict and attempting to equalize the blame between the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the illegal Bosnian Serb Army. Unfortunately these are the typical sentiments that can be expected from Mr. Bissett and Mr. MacKenzie since both men have close ties with right wing extremists and genocide deniers such as Srdja Trifkovic, Stephen Karganovic and Julia Gorin. (2) Furthermore, Bissett is the founder of the “Lord Byron Foundation for Balkans Studies” with the right-wing views. The articles published on the website not only deny the genocide committed against Bosniaks in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Rwanda, but also launch personal attacks against individuals who fight for justice and truth for the victims of genocide.

UN Peacekeeping in the New Millennium Introduction Contents In early September 2000 the largest group of world leaders ever to assemble in one place met at the United Nations' Millennium Summit in New York. This Introduction gathering of 189 heads of state included most of the leading figures in world affairs, including U.S. President Bill Clinton, Cuba's Fidel Castro, and Canada's Long-term Thinking Jean Chrétien. During the summit, princes, presidents, prime ministers, and dictators all took their turns on the podium of the UN General Assembly, each allotted time for a five-minute speech. Hosted by UN Secretary-General Kofi Missions Past and Present Annan, the summit highlighted the UN's renewed peacekeeping role in the new millennium and rededicated the organization to the lofty goals its founders set at The Brahimi Report their first conference in San Francisco in 1945 at the end of the Second World War. But 55 years after its creation, the record of the United Nations in limiting Three Canadian Views international conflicts and promoting global peace and understanding among its member states appears, at best, inconsistent. Despite the fact that the UN now finds itself committed to more peacekeeping missions than at any previous time in Discussion, Research and its history, the inability of the organization to deliver lasting peace in the conflict Essay Questions zones where its blue-helmeted troops are present was painfully obvious during the talks. On the very eve of the summit, armed paramilitary gangs brutally murdered three UN aid workers helping refugees in West Timor.
