December 2020 MAGAZINE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE A note from the Editor R Hello Readers,

December is finally here and Christmas is just around the corner. Soon we will say goodbye, and perhaps good riddance to 2020 and welcome in the New Year.

Serving your Community since 2003 For many this has been a tough year. Our beautiful Island depends so heavily on tourism, and many of us rely on it for our livelihoods. This year's unprecedented events have been catastrophic for many people whose source of income is dependent on the tourism and hospitality industries.

Throughout the year, the free publications in are filled with articles, adverts and Issue 201 appeals from the numerous charities who work so hard and tirelessly to support those in need, those who are less fortunate than ourselves. There are many people in Cyprus and all over the world without the basic necessities for living, not just at Christmas but all year round. From working with the refugees to volunteering for the countless animal charities and shelters on this island, there are numerous examples of the struggles that many face.

If you are able to support these charities in any way please do. With COVID restrictions in force and fundraising events cancelled many of these organisations have lost valuable 15th December 2020 income that they depend upon to carry out their good work. Ultimately, Christmas is a time for caring, and as we reach out to family and friends, I hope we'll also open our hearts to those who are lonely and in need, to those less fortunate than ourselves. In doing so we may capture the true Christmas Spirit. Have you got a story or charity event that you want to share Finally, this should be a joyous season and a time to take a step back from our busy lives and with our readership? Have you enjoy time with our loved ones. All of us on the Team at Pals Cyprus would like to wish a Merry snapped an image that captures Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your families. the spirit of the region?

Inside the Spice House – Healthy Winter Spices As the days get shorter and colder, yes even on the sunshine island of Cyprus, nothing beats the fragrant smell of winter spices along with log fires!

Cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, anise, all spice and cardamon have aromas that remind us of Christmas, mulled wine, mince pies, gingerbread and more.

These spices makeup the spice blends we know, and love using this time of year, namely Pumpkin Spice Blend and Gingerbread Spice Blend! They have many health benefits being full of antioxidants and anti-microbial properties helping keep our immune systems boosted.

Why not try the following ideas to enjoy Pumpkin and Gingerbread spice blends which are available from Spice&Easy.

6 Ways to Use Pumpkin Pie Spice

1. Add it to coffee: Mix pumpkin pie spice with your coffee grounds or sprinkle it on your Pumpkin Spice Latte (Just Like Starbucks!). 2. Mix it into whipped cream or Greek Yoghurt and then dollop over pies from pumpkin to apple and pecan. 3. Make sweet, spiced nuts: Perfect for afternoon snacks, parties, or gifts. 4. Try it in pasta: a dash of the pie spice is delicious added to Pasta with Brown Butter and Fried Sage. 5. Roast vegetables: Use pumpkin pie spice to season sweet vegetables like winter squash, sweet potatoes, and parsnips. 6. Stir it into pancake batter: Use about 1/2 teaspoon per cup of batter.

Few things can beat cosy winter nights with mulled wine, mulled juices, or a cup of Chai! Jingling Tills They have a Dancing Santa with a wonky knee, They have some plastic Angels on a Plastic tree; They gather all the presents and place them round the pot, (To the tune of Jingle Bells) Then they remember family and friends they have forgot . CHORUS. Through the rain and snow, how that wind doth blow, They've all the latest Gizmos, the best they can afford, With credit cards in hand it's to the shops they go, And the latest gadgets that come in from abroad. They have to get there early and start without delay, The place is really buzzing they play with them 'til late, It may not be just what they want, but they'll buy it anyway! The trouble is, in three week's time they'll all be out of date! CHORUS CHORUS. Jingling tills,Jingling tills,Santa's on his way, Now father's really worried, where has the money gone? O what fun the traders have in the run-up to this day, Mother's going frantic, it just goes on and on, Jingling tills,Jingling tills, Santa's almost here, They start to shout and argue, they're really on the skids, With a load of useless gifts from people far and near. But then they say, it's not for us, we do it for the kids. Now Johnny wants a bike,Suzy wants one too, CHORUS. And they want computer games, nothing else will do! But now the season's over, they clear up all the mess, Grandma wants some perfume in a fancy box, They've tablets for their headaches, and tablets for their stress, Grandpa wants some garden tools, but all he'll get are socks! They say they've really suffered with pressure and with strain, CHORUS. The trouble is, in twelve month's time, they'll do it all again!

Conspiracy theories have abounded since people sat around a campfire talking about where the sun went every night. 2020 has been a particularly fine year for conspiracy theories and if you're looking for something to talk about over Christmas dinner look no further than the craziest conspiracy theories of 2020.

The 5G theory It's biologically impossible for viruses to spread using the electromagnetic spectrum. But that isn't really the point — conspiracy theorists love to link two things which at a cursory glance may appear be correlated. However, correlation is not causation. The rapid rollout of 5G networks was taking place at the same time as the pandemic hit. Cue conspiracists, mainly anti-vaccine activists spreading fears about electromagnetic radiation.

Sudoku

The classic Sudoku game involves a grid of 81 squares. The grid is divided into nine blocks, each containing nine squares.

The rules of the sudoku are simple: each of the nine blocks has to contain all the numbers 1-9 within its squares. Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

The difficulty lies in that each vertical nine-square column, or horizontal nine- square line across, within the larger square, must also contain the numbers 1-9, without repetition or omission.

Samurai Sudoku differs by having a partial overlapping arrangement of five standard Sudokus.

The solution will be printed in the next issue of Pals. Last months’s solution is on Page 27 Quick Crossword

MAGAZINE Touch or Go on Brexit

By Sam Orgill

ProACT Sam looks forward to independence day and clarifies the last minute things Expats should do to secure their EU Citizen Rights before Brexit ends December 31th.

What's the worse that could happen with Brexit? After the exaggerated Brexit fears of 2019 it couldn't get any worse in 2020…could it? If an Expat is registered as legally resident in their country of 2021 will bring a new year and a fresh start. residence before 31st December they retain their right to EU Living and Working Abroad for a lifetime for them and their dependant One thing is absolutely clear, the UK has left the EU on 31st January family. This includes EU expats in the UK through the Settled Status 2020 and the transition period with no change will end on 31st Scheme. In the EU and Cyprus formal registration leading to December. permanent residency confirms EU Citizen rights for a lifetime. What does this mean to Expats?: TRADE BLOCK There is a bit of a trade blockage at the moment. My view is the EU is 1. You Need to be officially Resident before 31th December a free trade zone - inside. The EU has significant tariff and trade 2020 barriers to countries outside the EU, the place the UK are going to. 2. Have accommodation in country 3. If resident be tax resident. These trade arrangements are controlled by WTO World Trade 4. Have the Right to Work and Set Up a business organisation international laws, and are used by USA, China, Japan 5. Have access to state health care and the UK, from January 2021. 6. Have the right to ongoing medical cover through the S1 scheme That is 4 of the 5 largest economies in the world. 7. Receive S1 healthcare benefits in the future even if state retirement occurs after Independence Day on 1st There is life for the UK outside the EU. January. 8. Right to Visa free travel into that country If the UK can get better EU trade deal terms than WTO rules then all the better for EU and UK companies. The EU27 will present a THE DAY AFTER common negotiating approach to allowing new trade arrangements.
