Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 25th September 2009 2 Abstract This thesis examines the nature of lord-peasant relations in the final stages of Hungarian seigneurialism, dating roughly from 1700 to the emancipation of the peasantry in 1848. It investigates how the terms of the peasants’ relations with their lords, especially their obligations and the rights to the land they farmed, were established, both through written law and by customary practice. It also examines how the reforms of this period sought to redefine lord-peasant relations and rights to landed property. Under Maria Theresa land reform had been a means to protect the rural status quo and the livelihood of the peasantry: by the end of the 1840s it had become an integral part of a liberal reform movement aiming at the complete overhaul of Hungary’s ‘feudal’ social and economic system. In this period the status of the peasantry underpinned all attempts at reform. All reforms were claimed to be in the best interests of the peasantry, yet none stemmed from the peasants themselves. Conversely, the peasantry had means to voice their grievances through petitions and recourse to the courts, and took the opportunity provided by the reforms to reassert their rights and renegotiate the terms of their relations to their landlords.

The role of transborder cooperation in the system of international relations as well as in the context of developing logistic infrastructure in the social and economic development of border regions of Ukrainе and Hungary has been analysed. The main directions of the development of the border region are: making use of the possibilities of the favourable geographical and geopolitical location of the region, development of tourism, intensification of international transport corridor, formation of an international logistic cluster.     92/150 ÁGNES ERŐSS KATALIN KOVÁLY PATRIK TÁTRAI Effects of the Ukrainian Crisis in Transcarpathia: the Hungarian Perspective November 2016 www.migracje.uw.edu.pl 1 Ágnes Erőss – Katalin Kovály – Patrik Tátrai Geographical Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences 2 Abstract Ukraine’s turbulent recent history has had serious economic and social effects in its westernmost region, Transcarpathia. The East Ukrainian armed conflict, accompanied by a serious economic downturn, resulted in major modifications in individual and family life strategies determined by emigration and the policies of the neighbouring V4 states. The main focus of the present research was to study how recent political events (Euromaidan, the Russian takeover in Crimea, the Donbas conflict) affected Transcarpathia and its ethnic Hungarian population; furthermore, how patterns of individual and family life and migration strategies have been influenced by Hungary’s kin-state politics. The study is based on analysis of statistical data and policy documents, complemented by semi-structured interviews conducted in spring 2016. We found that the dynamics of emigration from Transcarpathia in the past few years are fuelled by the unrest in Eastern Ukraine (including the military drafts) and Hungary’s kin-state politics, especially the preferential (re)naturalisation simplifying the acquisition of Hungarian citizenship. Individual and family livelihood strategies, migration patterns and cross-border connections are influenced by the regional geopolitics of V4 countries. We argue that the western neighbours of the weakening Ukraine have unobtrusively made attempts to take advantage of the changing geopolitical circumstances in order to increase their influence and attract human resources.     Ministry of Interior Department of European Cooperation Trafficking in human beings in Hungary Human trafficking trends of Hungary Hungary is one of the major source countries within the European Union. It is primarily a country of origin and transit for women and girls trafficked for sexual exploitation, and a source country for men and women trafficked for labour exploitation. Arising from its geographical situation Hungary is a transit country of illegal migration, it lays in the crossroad of east-western and south-eastern migration. Primary destination countries for sexual exploitation are the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, and Germany but among traffickers United Kingdom is becoming also a significant destination. The principle countries of origin for victims of trafficking through Hungary are Romania and Bulgaria. In the light of experience over recent years and on the feedback from international cooperation Hungarian persons becoming victims abroad are primarily deriving from Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, (North-Eastern part of Hungary) Szabolcs- Szatmár-Bereg County (North-Eastern part of Hungary) and Baranya County (South-Western part of Hungary) but Tolna County (South- Western part of Hungary) and Békés County (South-Eastern part of Hungary) are also significant source regions. Characteristics of victims and perpetrators Victimization in Hungary has several root causes like poverty, high unemployment, and inequality in the labour market. In the counties on the map indicated by red - especially the North-Eastern region of Hungary - unemployment rate is quite huge which one of the reasons for victimization is. High-risk groups for trafficking includes undereducated young adults resided in poor conditions or had lived in state-provided welfare homes or juvenile correctional facilities.

    STUDIES Structural and administrative implications of the Trianon Peace Treaty, 1920*1 Zoltán Hajdú World War I re-organised European power and Centre for Economic and territorial relations. The victors (Entente Regional Studies, member countries) emerged from the war with significant territorial gains, while the losers Pécs, (Central Powers) suffered considerable losses Hungary and the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy was E-mail: [email protected] dissolved. The political-territorial power structure of the Monarchy was extremely complex. The aim of this study is to present how state and territorial administrations were reorganized in the newly independent Hungary. The dissolution of the Monarchy led to the dismantling of the multi-ethnic and quasi- federal state of historical Hungary. While the Hungarian government recognised the secession of Croatia-Slavonia, it firmly opposed the detachment of other territories; notwith- standing, by the end of December 1918, various nationalities (Slovaks, Romanians, Serbs) had formed quasi-blocks in Hungary and proclaimed their secession. Hungary became a sovereign state after losing the majority of the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary (71.4%) and 63.5% of its population.
