PREFACE Andhra Pradesh has always been in the forefront in the matter of welcoming meaningful change in Higher Education. It has been credited with severalfirsts in the past. It continues to take the lead in experimenting and in innovating and in providing greater access to quality education. In order to offer reliable and authentic information about the Higher Education scene in Andhra Pradesh, an attempt is made here to provide district wise / region wise details about Colleges and Courses, enrolment figures, fee structure in as inclusive a manner as possible. It is our hope that with the constant help and support given by the Universities and Colleges, this initiative could be finetunedperiodically to serve the interests of students and the public at large. In time, this attempt would culminate in producing updated year books on Higher Education year after year. A word about Higher Education stakeholders in Andhra Pradesh is in order here. Andhra Pradesh has witnessed a phenomerml expansion of opportunities in Higher Education in General and Professional and Technical Education in particular in the last few years. The State has been very proactive in adjusting itself to sweeping changes occurring globally in the field of Higher Education. The State has adopted a strategy of Private participation in moving Higher Education from a supply-driven model to a demand-driven model. There are 14 Universities, 7 Deemed Universities and 2 Central Universities & 1295 Degree Colleges, 225 Engineering Colleges, 272 MCA Colleges and209 MBA Colleges in the State, The expansion in the closing years of the century is unprecedented. And yet with a total enrolment figure of more than five lakhsy our position in terms of the percentage of entire population is far from satisfactory. We still have a lot to do in the matter of providing wider access and equal opportunity. It is agreed on all hands that it is only through Higher Education we can broaden the social base of democracy. An aware citizenry & even an active citizenry is our only hope in these times of crisis to contribute to the total well being of society. It is good to remind ourselves constantly that in a competitive world we inhabit, only quality and excellence alone would stand us in good stead and nothing else should merit our attention. The Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education(APSCHE), a coordinating and planning body, the first of its kind in our country^ was established in 1988. It is primarily a liaison between the University Grants Commission, the State Government and the Universities to coordinate and determine standards in institutions of Higher Education. The APSCHE would pledge to strive ceaselessly to carry for ward the ideal of collegiality in its pursuit of excellence in the field of Higher Education. Hyderabad Prof C.
