This group of movies includes independent feature-length films, documentaries, short and experimental films and videos. They closely engage with the unique conditions of Malaysia’s economic development, ethnic relationships, and cultural practices, which together comprise significant understandings of the nationhood of Malaysia. I understand cultural memory as dynamic, multifaceted, and as a widely contestational interplay of past and present in socio-cultural contexts. The making of cultural memory involves various participants and allows us to examine the nexus between individual remembering and culturally mediated memory. Culturally mediated memory appears as a process of the representation and manifestation of the past in the present. By studying the mediality of ‘present pasts,’ we gain an understanding of how the past is remembered and how it is mediated via cultural objects in the present. -

Exposed and concealed Roma conflict: Representation of contemporary Roma conflicts in Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary Abstract: Roma conflict is one of the dominant issues that societies and cinemas of Eastern Europe should face. Recently, a variety of deeply touching films have been created such as Just the Wind (dir. Benedek Fliegauf) and Judgement in Hungary (dir. Eszter Hajdú). While the films show disgruntlement or even large-scale protests and riots, the films’ plots rarely present the causes of such events. Documentary film projects with sociological ambitions, however, stand out above these films, they are knowledgeable and insightful but their range is only local. There are some exceptional cases that overthrow this rule, such as Moving a Settlement or The Roma King (dir. Viliam Poltikovič). On the other hand, the superproductions such as Koza (dir. Ivan Ostrochovský) or The Queen of Silence (dir. Agnieszka Zwiefka) mainly concentrate on the formal side at the expense of the simplification of the film’s content. My purpose is to present various variants of the representation of Roma conflict in these films. Keywords: Roma, Central Europe, film, politics “Roma Issue” has progressed to become one of the most serious areas related to Central Europe since the beginning of 1990s. The time of political transformation has created a new context for the issue present in the collective consciousness for many decades. -

It’s the same situation on this and on the other side of the intra-German border—and the same TV programs. Tatort (thriller The Scene of the Crime)orWetten, dass … (show To bet that …) deliver entertainment and relaxation into the living rooms of West and East. In his or her leisure time the citizen of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) performs ‘Virtuelle Republikflucht’ on a regular basis—a virtual illegal crossing of the border. He brings the Western world into his home via TV screen, marvels at the Western product spectrum and virtually travels to places in Germany and the whole world that are inaccessible to him in reality. And only in the so-called ‘Tal der Ahnungslosen’, the ‘valley of the clueless’, are viewers dependent upon the GDR-owned channels because of a lack of an alternative: the region around Dresden and in the far north of the GDR could not be reached by the powerful transmitting installations of the Western stations close to the border and in West Berlin. Television across the Border of Political Systems The research on media use in the GDR was dominated by this scenario until the end of the 1990s. It was a popular and handy hypothesis, which condemned GDR TV to insignificance and celebrated the victory of the West German free media over the East German media indoctrinated with party politics. -
Contemporary Slovak Film: a Symptom of the Times Or a Representation of Society?
CONTEMPORARY SLOVAK FILM: A SYMPTOM OF THE TIMES OR A REPRESENTATION OF SOCIETY? JANA DUDKOVÁ Institute of Theatre and Film Research, Slovak Academy of Sciences Abstract: The phenomenon of Slovak cinema after 1989 is often linked with metaphors of ab- sence and sterility. There are many reasons why this can be stated, and they are to a great ex- tent closely connected with the reckless transformation and denationalisation of cinema which almost ruined it in the 1990s. On the one hand, cinema is no longer controlled or supported by the state; on the other hand, it is still financially dependent on it. (Until 2009, the ministers of culture are still responsible for the division of film funds, and frequent changes in the volume of available funds or the state’s preferred subject matter have resulted in a number of projects that received short-term funding but have never been finished.) The focus is no longer on the middle class; therefore, there has been a decrease in cinema attendance and box office success. However, films are still reflecting some social changes and specifics as well as the position of Slovakia in a certain “global” world order. This article is going to outline some often overlooked approaches to post-1989 Slovak cinema as a reflectionof social change. The focus will be on the sense of belatedness in generational gestures which embody the beliefs of the transition period as well as the spatial metaphors of one’s relationship to society. Last but not least, attention will be paid to the unconscious self-reflection of cinema and its role in the shift of society towards the market economy. -

Juli 1971 in Wernigerode Erstreferent: Prof. Dr. Hein Retter Koreferentin: PD Dr. Petra Korte Tag der mündlichen Prüfung: 15.11.2002 VORWORT „Über den Thälmann-Kult nachzudenken oder zu reden, ist eigentlich langweilig. Ein armseliges, dürftiges Thema, das mit wenigen Gedanken auskommt.“ Dieser Aussage der Berliner Historikerin Annette Leo (1995, S. 205) möchte ich nach abgeschlossener Forschungsarbeit zu diesem Thema widersprechen. Schon der chronologische Vergleich der Dokumente, mit denen die SED seit Beginn der DDR- Geschichte den ehemaligen Kommunistenführer zu idealisieren versuchte, erwies sich als Offenbar- werden von eklatanten Widersprüchen. Noch interessanter aber war, Widersprüchlichkeiten in den Texten von solchen Autoren nachzuspüren, die das Thälmann-Bild vor und nach der politischen Wende unterschiedlich schilderten. Das Buch von Thilo Gabelmann (alias Egon Grübel) Thälmann ist niemals gefallen? Eine Legende stirbt von 1996 gab den eigentlichen Anstoß für meine erzie- hungswissenschaftlich ausgerichtete Forschung. Nicht zuletzt war die Beschäftigung mit den Doku- menten aus den 70er und 80er Jahren zugleich eine Auseinandersetzung mit meiner eigenen Biogra- phie, da ich in dieser Zeit auch mit Ernst Thälmann als Vorbild erzogen worden bin.
