FEATURE In pre-production and will be shooting on location in Vietnam and Canada.

Feature Film Synopsis

3TKarma tells the miraculous story of Tina Tran, a strong-willed Vietnamese immigrant to with a hard past. It is a portrayal of her struggles and successes as she tries to support her family and live righteously in a new country. Being raised in a family with a Buddhist & spiritual background, her soul is known to be the same as Snow White, not the Disney masterpiece, but an ancient Vietnamese commander from the past. It is also believed that her late brother, who died when he and Tina were children back in Vietnam, had also been her one and only soul mate. Being lost without his spiritual guidance, Tina finds herself entangled in the fast life of sex, drugs, and To- ronto’s underground rave culture. Soon finding herself as a high roller in the nightlife scene, she is pushed to a point at which she knows she is in over her head. Through the effects of law enforcement and violence, her organi- zation starts to crumble until it is she who is in legal trouble.

Tina’s arrest led her to discover her love 3TKarma through a Vietnamese lawyer, Anthony. With the help of Tina’s sister, Minh, Anthony is realized to be the carrier of her long lost soul mate’s spirit. However, the disparity be- tween the spiritual world and the physical reality we know brings upon peri- ods of denial and conflict that occur within the family. Tina, now accepting her 3TKarma, is challenged to balance her spiritual duty in the present and as it translates back in time; all the while, she is being subconsciously guided by her soul mate’s spirit through dreams and her sister’s prayers. Depicting a real life story of hardship, struggle, love, and success, 3TKarma demon- strates the strength of a family’s generations, the ever undeniability of hope, and the timism that exists in the world if you just choose to see it. This drama filled story is meant to inspire.

Early stardom came calling for Chris, but school was a priority and she knew she would eventually follow in her big brother's footsteps if this were truly her calling.

During a trip to Asia, Chris wowed a prolific Hong Kong producer who immediately casted her in an action film. Two weeks prior to principal photography, a stand-out character was wrote into the script to showcase Chris’ fighting skills. When the film hit no.1 at the box office, Chris received an invitation to appear as a special guest on the globe-spanning adventure, "Where In the World Is Matt Lauer" on NBC's THE TODAY SHOW. The live-broadcast interview with popu- lar American journalist Matt Lauer was watched by over 6 million viewers. Hollywood was one of them.

Immediately after her appearance on the show, Chris was invited by some of Hollywood’s big- gest casting directors- Francine Maisler of Sony Pictures and Julie Hutchinson of Universal Stu- dios, to audition in Los Angeles and begin her journey as an on-screen artist. From martial arts to music, writing to entrepreneurship, Chris’ passion and commitment to constantly learning new skills makes her truly versatile and ready-for-action anytime, anywhere.

South Korean companies have been the most aggressive entrants into Vietnam's film industry. CJ Group remains one of South Korea's largest entertainment conglomerates. Last year it racked up $24.4 billion in sales, and it continues to expand across Asia.

CJ Group, through its subsidiary CJ CGV, is the largest cinema operator in Vietnam, with 24 locations. It acquired a majority stake in the privately run Megastar chain in 2011 and plans to open 31 more theaters by 2020, which would increase its market share to 70%, said Rhee Sang- jin, CGV's spokesperson.

Sister company CJ E&M co-produced "Let Hoi Decide" with Chanh Phuong Films. The movie broke box office records for a domestic film when it was released in 2014.

Lotte Cinema, another South Korean company, is also a key player, with 16 theaters nationwide. It plans to open 54 more in the next five years as it expands its network of shopping centers, Lotte Cinema CEO Park Sung-hoon told local media in April.

These foreign companies are transforming Vietnam's film industry. Their theaters still mainly show Hollywood imports such as "Furious 7," the latest chapter in the "Fast and Furious" franchise that recently topped local box office records with over $6.5 million in ticket sales.

In 2012, 61% of films shown in Vietnam came from the U.S. and other Western countries, while only 12% were made at home. But Vietnamese works are growing in popularity now that CJ E&M is throwing its weight behind Hollywood-style blockbusters like "Let Hoi Decide." The romantic comedy was one of 28 Vietnamese films shown at CJ CGV theaters in 2014.

"Let Hoi Decide" raked in a record $268,000 on opening day Dec. 12. Less than three weeks later, ticket sales had reached $3.85 million, making it the highest-grossing Vietnamese film ever.

Ballooning box office

These record-breaking sales reflect a rapidly expanding market. Ticket sales surged by 514% between 2008 and 2012, primarily driven by young audiences. CGV expects revenue to top $100 million this year. "Vietnam is a young country now," said Thuy Linh, who writes about film for Thanh Nien News, an English-language online newspaper. "The people who go to the cinemas are young, mostly teenagers. My parents, for instance, don't go to the movies."

Jeong Tae-sung, head of the film division at CJ E&M, said South Korean companies target South- east Asia because they promise higher returns in the future. "For CJ E&M, the Korean film market means our root, while the Chinese market represents the present, and the Southeast Asian mar- ket, the future," Jeong said in a press release. He added that among Southeast Asian markets, Vietnam was considered a "core region" for the company.

Vietnamese millennials, who grew up on romantic comedies and action films, have little interest in the state-funded movies of yesteryear -- typically didactic war stories with rudimentary camera- work, lighting and sound. "The tastes of the moviegoing audience have become more sophisticated due to the large influx of Hollywood films and digital platforms. I don't think filmmakers can get away with low production value anymore," said Timothy Linh Bui, a director and producer who was born in Ho Chi Minh City, grew up in California and returned to Vietnam in the 1990s.

Many of today's biggest hits come from Vietnamese-American filmmakers like Bui, who see more opportunity in Ho Chi Minh City than in Hollywood. Others include "Let Hoi Decide" director Char- lie Nguyen and Ham Tran, whose debut film -- a Vietnamese-American-funded drama about Vi- etnam War refugees -- was banned by the government. Eight years later, he returned to Vietnam to direct "How to Fight in Six Inch Heels," a romantic comedy produced by private studio Galaxy.

The following year, Tran directed "Hollow," a horror film that also pointed to changes in the film industry.

"It's a very exciting time for Vietnamese cinema," Tran said. "Only two years ago, the only films that got financing in Vietnam were comedies and art-house films. Horror films had to be mixed with another genre, such as comedy, in order to be successful. But now there have already been nearly six horror films released since the end of 2014."

Censorship fading

The liberalization of the film industry has not eliminated censorship. Vietnam's cinema law pro- hibits movies that "spread reactionary ideas, obscene and depraved lifestyle, criminal acts, social evils, superstition" or "undermine fine traditional habits and customs." Unlike neighboring Cam- bodia and Malaysia, Vietnam allowed cinemas to screen the British-American erotic drama "Fifty Shades of Grey." However, 20 minutes of footage was cut for being too risque, infuriating local viewers.

"Censorship is still an issue, but in my opinion, [it is] less rigid than before," said director Victor Vu, whose 2012 martial arts movie "Blood Letter" won the Golden Kite prize for best feature film, Vietnam's equivalent of an Academy Award. The same year, Vu also won the Golden Lotus, an- other major Vietnamese film award, for his thriller "Scandal."

With higher budgets and Hollywood-trained talent, commercial productions like Vu's have largely squeezed state-funded films out of the market. "It was the first time in many years that privately funded films took home the top prizes," he said. It was not the last. In 2015, only four of the 17 Golden Kite nominees were government-backed films. One of the four was "Living with History," which performed poorly at the box office despite its nearly $1 million budget. The winner, "Rise," was a privately funded film about a female gang leader that brought in over $1 million in ticket sales.

Pushing boundaries

However, critics say many contemporary commercial films -- while more technically adept -- have serious shortcomings when it comes to content.

"The editing is professional, with attractive sound and camerawork," said Linh from Thanh Nien News. "But the scripts are unexceptional, veering confusingly between an effort to capture some- thing important and an effort to be entertaining and attract audiences. Characters are played by good-looking people who may not act well, put into fake social backgrounds of posh clothes and cars and houses." But others say these movies are nevertheless pushing boundaries. Filmmaker Bui suggested the pressure to make a profit often motivates directors to tell more interesting stories. "State-funded films often serve a different purpose, and profit is not top of the agenda. Private equity-financed films allow for broader stories to be told, thus pushing the envelope on censorship," he said.

Gold in silver screen: Foreign investors set eyes on Vietnam's film market By Ngoc An, Thanh Nien News HANOI - Tuesday, August 04, 2015 09:13

Moviegoers queue to buy tickets at a Vietnamese Cineplex.

For the first time in its five-year history, Moviemov -- a traveling film festival sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Heritage and Culture to promote the country's movies in Asia -- made its debut in Vietnam last month. Speaking to the press, the festival's artistic director Goffredo Bettini said Italian filmmakers were eying the Southeast Asia's film market with a focus on Vietnam. He said they saw the potentials of the fast-growing Vietnamese market, hoping to boosting their collabo- rations with local film producers and distributors.

Italians are not the only one who recognized profitability in the Vietnamese film industry. The country's box office jumped from US$13.3 million in 2009 to nearly $80 million last year, according to the Motion Picture Association of America. Ticket sales were expected to hit $100 million this year. In recent years, media giants from South Korea have rushed to accumulate bigger shares in the pie, trying to capitalize on the strong interest in Korean pop culture.

CJ Group's subsidiary CJ CGV took over Vietnam's largest cinema chain Megastar in 2011, and is now operating 26 multiplexes around the country. Dong Won-kwak, CEO of CJ CGV, said Vi- etnam has a lot of room to grow, considering that its movie going rate is only 0.2 times a person a year, while in countries with big film industries each person goes to movie four times a year. He was once quoted in an interview with local media that Vietnamese market contributed to 30 per- cent of CJ CGV's annual sales, adding that Vietnam was one of its markets with good growth, besides US, China and Indonesia.

Statistics showed that Vietnam imports 150-170 films a year, about 70 percent of which from Hollywood, and its record box office has kept being raised recently. When it was premiered here in 2009, 3D epic sci-fi "Avatar" earned around VND20 billion ($900,000) in three weeks. However, in April, the seventh installment of the action series "Fast & Furious" broke the record with VND100 billion ($4.5 million) only after 12 days. "Jurassic World," which was premiered about two months later, reached the same sales figure within one month. Lotte Cinema, another Korean investor, has opened 16 Cineplex’s since it debuted here in 2008, and planned to have 60 Cineplex’s in five years. Indonesian-owned Platinum Cineplex entered Vietnam in 2011 and has since opened five Cineplex’s, mostly in Hanoi. The operator said it planned to open another five in three years. Two local chains Galaxy Cinema and BHD Star Cineplex have five and three Cineplex’s, respectively.

The government currently owns about 106 cinemas around the country, but most of them have almost been out of business for years.

Most of local moviegoers do not bother to go to old-looking, smelly buildings to watch Vietnamese war movies or low-budget foreign movies.

In 2013, their questionable effectiveness caused the public and many critics to oppose to a gov- ernment project to upgrade the cinemas along theaters and galleries with a total of VND10.8 trillion ($486.62 million) by 2020.

Vietnam Overview

In recent years, the beautiful Southeast Asian country of Vietnam has finally emerged from the shadow of its war with the US. In terms of economy, its GDP is currently growing by around 6% a year while there was also a significant increase in tourists during 2014. From a film and TV production point of view, Vietnam is also opening up.

Although it has some way to go before catching up with regional alternatives such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, it has a wonderful range of locations and a hard-working, relatively in- expensive crew-base. Growth at present is largely driven by domestic production, which was de- regulated in 2002/3. Since then, Vietnam has seen the emergence of Galaxy Studios, a powerful local player that operates across production, distribution and exhibition. Galaxy’s films have started to find an overseas audience among the 1.5 million ethnic Vietnamese now living in the USA.

International film, TV and commercials producers are now discovering Vietnam, though lack of tax breaks will make it harder for the country to secure major feature film projects.
