REHeapa Winter Solstice 2016 By Lee A. Breakiron A WORLDWIDE PHENOMENON Few fiction authors are as a widely published internationally as Robert E. Howard (e.g., in Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Yugoslavian). As former REHupan Vern Clark states: Robert E. Howard has long been one of America’s stalwarts of Fantasy Fiction overseas, with extensive translations of his fiction & poetry, and an ever mushrooming distribution via foreign graphic story markets dating back to the original REH paperback boom of the late 1960’s. This steadily increasing presence has followed the growing stylistic and market influence of American fantasy abroad dating from the initial translations of H.P. Lovecraft’s Arkham House collections in Spain, France, and Germany. The growth of the HPL cult abroad has boded well for other American exports of the Weird Tales school, and with the exception of the Lovecraft Mythos, the fantasy fiction of REH has proved the most popular, becoming an international literary phenomenon with translations and critical publications in Spain, Germany, France, Greece, Poland, Japan, and elsewhere. [1] All this shows how appealing REH’s exciting fantasy is across cultures, despite inevitable losses in stylistic impact through translations. Even so, there is sometimes enough enthusiasm among readers to generate fandom activities and publications. We have already covered those in France. [2] Now let’s take a look at some other countries. GERMANY, AUSTRIA, AND SWITZERLAND The first Howard stories published in German were in the fanzines Pioneer #25 and Lands of Wonder ‒ Pioneer #26 (Austratopia, Vienna) in 1968 and Pioneer of Wonder #28 (Follow, Passau, Germany) in 1969.

REHeapa Autumnal Equinox 2017 THE RISE OF THE NEW HYBORIAN LEGION, PART TWO By Lee A. Breakiron As we saw last time, the Robert E. Howard United Press Association (REHupa) was the first amateur press association (apa) dedicated to that author. Its founder, Tim C. Marion, started it in 1972 when he was 13 and edited it through the first 19 of its bimonthly Mailings, but left afterward since he was ultimately more interested in fan activities than Howard as a literary figure. Before that, discontent with his leadership and with the real dearth of worthwhile essays and critiques during the early years led to future literary critic Don Herron and others to leave and create The Hyperborian League (THL) apa in October, 1975. Its official editor (OE) was Herron and it was “devoted to the creative discussion of authors Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard and their works,” though material on other fantasy writers and poets was welcomed. Herron said he spelled the name of the apa “Hyperborian” rather than “Hyperborean” because he wanted to emphasize the fact that it was devoted to both CAS (whence Hyperborean) and REH (whence Hyborian). It would still be occasionally misspelled, even on covers. Its official organ document was titled “Skull & Sandalwood,” suggested by REH’s “Skull-Face” and CAS’s Sandalwood. The fanzines composing the quarterly Mailings were at first stapled by the contributors and left so by the OE, who collected them and mailed them out to the current individual members. He also distributed some copies to libraries, sent “speculative” (“spec”) copies to recruit prospective members, and sold remaining ones to defray postage costs.

2 A Strange Phantom in the Night Death stalks the streets of Tarantia. A monstrous creature, night after night, preys upon vulnerable women. Exotic dancers, trollops, run away princesses, and women of ill repute; the night brings terror to those who would usually seek its discretion. Each morning more strangled corpses are discovered in heaps around the back alleys, taverns, lotus houses and other dens of iniquity where such women frequent. A pall fear and blood hangs thick over the city. Stifled by the weight of the crown the King is bored with his daily routine of state and tedium. He takes ill and sequesters himself in his chambers. Much to the chigrine of the petty Aquilonian officials currying for his attention and to the bewilderment of the supposed court healers, the King responds to no one, until he hears the rumors. A savage stangler. Capable of tearing a man limb from limb, prowling the streets. Seemingly unstoppable. Perhaps this will cure him of the malady of civilization. In the throes illness, King Conan takes to the streets to put an end to the slaughter. Donning a skull mask and stifling a besetting cough, Conan becomes a phantom in the night. He keeps to the shadows. He dodges patrols of his own elite Black Dragon guards and finally narrows in on the Strangler, near the cemetary, on the edge of the "entertainment" district. The barbarian turned king finally begins to feel alive again as he now hunts the strangler. "Cutthroats, kidnappers, and a cult of rapists... all were struck down by a strange phantom in the night." (Inspired by Marvel's Conan the Barbarian #4 "The King in a Cage" by Jason Aaron) Objectives If the Hero kills the The Strangler before the end of turn 6, the Hero wins the game If the Strangler kills all four ladies of the night before the end of turn 6, the Overlord wins the game.

  • Conan the Barbarian ______
In Defense of Conan the Barbarian ___________________________________ The Anarchism, Primitivism, & Feminism of Robert Ervin Howard Robert E. Howard has been the subject of numerous media, including several biographies and a movie. He is known and well-remembered as the creator of Conan the Cimmerian Kull of Atlantis, and the Puritan demon-hunter, Solomon Cane. His most famous creation by far, Conan has secured an immoveable foothold in the popular consciousness, and has created an enduring legacy for an author whose career lasted just over a decade. Unfortunately, due mostly to the Schwarzenegger films of the 80s, this legacy- the image of Conan in the public mind- is an undue blemish on a complex, intelligent character, and on Howard himself. In Defense of Conan the Barbarian seeks to invalidate these stereotypes, and to illuminate the social, political, economic, and ethical content of the Howard's original Conan yarns. • Scarlet Citadel
3-5 Back to scarlet citadel Conan still had in mind the ludicrous image of Tostha-lanthi’s headless body, the black wizard that he just beheaded, running after his head carried away in the air by his rival Pelias the Sorcerer transformed into an eagle. His loathing for spell caster of all sorts reached its climax. His fortuitous alliance with Pelias certainly allowed him to retrieve his Aquilonian throne. Yet, he did not feel indebted at all as he previously freed the Sorcerer from the prison of pain in which the black wizard trapped him ten years ago. An ill-feeling was however growing inside him. Was it due to the disturbing features of the sorcerer or the cursed monstrosities sensed when he was captive in the dungeons of the Scarlet Citadel, he could not say. But his decision was taken. He will return to the Citadel to empty the place from its damned inhabitants. In the company of General Pallantides and of two exceptional bowmen, Conan’s journey is uneventful and the Citadel walls are now in sight. Under cover of darkness, quiet as a shadow, the four men enter the walls of the Citadel. But the dark science of Pelias allowed him to anticipate the actions of the fools daring to defy him. The Citadel suddenly awakens from the necromancy powers of the sorcerer and from Tsotha’s pets coming from the depths of the dungeons. Satha the Old One, the giant snake, at the front. Retreat is sealed. Winning the Game: To win the game, the heroes must kill Pelias.

REHeapa Winter Solstice 2019 THE RISE OF THE NEW HYBORIAN LEGION, PART SEVEN By Lee A. Breakiron As we saw in our first installment [1], the Robert E. Howard United Press Association (REHupa) was founded in 1972 by a teen-aged Tim Marion as the first amateur press association (apa) devoted to Howard. Brian Earl Brown became Official Editor (OE) by 1977 and put in a lot of work guiding the organization, though not always competently. The Mailings at that time were in a real doldrums due to the paucity of REH-related content and the lack of any interest by Brown to do anything about it, even to the point of his weakening the rules that used to require such content. He at least had good communications with members, explaining problems and actions, and holding votes over issues. In the early 1980s, Rusty Burke, Vernon Clark, and Graeme Flanagan started pushing for more Howard-related content, with Burke finally wresting away the editorship from Brown, as we shall see. By 1983, the regular membership stood at only 22 and Mailings were running about 190 pages in length, though the 10th anniversary issue #60 did peak at 478. L. Sprague de Camp, Glenn Lord, and Karl Edward Wagner were honorary members, and copies were being archived at Ranger, Tex., Junior College. Former, longtime REHupan James Van Hise wrote the first comprehensive history of REHupa through Mailing #175. [2] Like him, but more so, we are focusing only on noteworthy content, especially that relevant to Howard. Here are the highlights of Mailings #61 through #70.

REHeapa Summer Solstice 2019 THE RISE OF THE NEW HYBORIAN LEGION, PART FIVE By Lee A. Breakiron As we saw in our first installment [1], the Robert E. Howard United Press Association (REHupa) was founded in 1972 by a teen-aged Tim Marion as the first amateur press association (apa) devoted to Howard. Reforms by the next Official Editor (OE), Jonathan Bacon, had gone a good way toward making the fanzine Mailings look less amateurish, which in turn attracted more and better members. There was still too many Mailing Comments (MCs) being made relative to the material worth commenting on, still too little that concerned Howard himself, and still too much being said about tangential matters (pastiches, comics, gaming, etc.) or personal affairs. A lot of fan fiction and poetry was being contributed, but this did garner a lot of appreciation and commentary from the other members. The next OE, Brian Earl Brian, put in a lot of work guiding the organization, though not always competently. Former, longtime REHupan James Van Hise wrote the first comprehensive history of REHupa through Mailing #175. [2] Like him, but more so, we are focusing only on noteworthy content, especially that relevant to Howard. Here are the highlights of Mailings #46 through #55. In Mailing #46 (July, 1980), Brown features some information on electrostencilling and a trip report on the Columbus, Ohio, science fiction and fantasy convention Marcon. He mentions L. Sprague de Camp’s story “Far Babylon,” in which the lost soul of Robert E. Howard appears, portrayed in a positive light. On a matter of current contention, he declares that anyone should be able to “frank” (reproduce in their zine) any material or statements by other people and that no one should have any expectation of privacy from those outside the apa.
