Narbo Martius became the first Roman colony outside of Italy. Narbonne as a dynamic port in ancient times was adorned with beautiful Roman public monuments. The only structures left from this period of great prosperity are the mysterious Horreum (underground galleries used as a storage facility) and the Via Domitia (Roman road linking Rome to the Iberic peninsula) on the town hall square. In the Middle-Ages the Archbishops’ Palace, the cloister and the gothic Cathedral Saint Just and Saint Pastor are built. They are the symbols of the religious power of the great prelates of Narbonne. In the 19th c. winegrowing took a leading place in the region’s economy. In spite of the Phylloxera crisis the region became the land of plenty for winegrowers. Landowners and traders got rich and had their sumptuous houses built along the canal de la Robine, which substituted for the Aude River at the end of the 17th c. DID YOU KWOW? ANCIENT NARBO MARTIUS’ RIVER PORT La Nautique, which is located on the lagoon area, was Narbonne’s main harbour during the Roman period. At that time it was the biggest port in Gaulle; when Narbo Martius was exchanging with ports across the whole Mediterranean sea including the famous port of Ostie in Rome where a mosaic picturing ships from Narbonne can be seen. Archaeological excavations have unearthed amphorae and other rare pieces such as a wooden anchor of an impressive size. More recently the remains of a luxurious villa as well as the remnants of a warehouse and the surface of an old road heading towards Narbonne were found. 5 NARBONNE : GRAND SITE D’OCCITANIE SAINT JUST AND SAINT PASTOR VIA DOMITIA GOTHIC CATHEDRAL A segment of this great antique road going from Fitted with the highest gothic choir in the south of Italy to Spain is visible on the town hall square. The panoramas are magnificent too as you descend to Les Coussolles Beach and La Palme Lagoon. The cycle route then follows the train line to reach Port-la-Nouvelle. This is a lively harbour where you might, for example, witness a freight ship being loaded. It lies at the end of the Canal de la Robine, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The atmosphere then changes as you cycle along towpaths, past locks marking your progress to the city of Narbonne with its splendid cathedral complex and covered market. The route Départ Arrivée Leucate Narbonne Signposting will soon be completed from Leucate Lagoon to Port-La-Nouvelle. Take care descending from the Leucate Plateau, as the Durée Distance 2 h 36 min 39,28 Km way down to join the cycle path to the train station of Leucate La Franqui is very steep. The rift platform records extension on detached rotational faults above Triassic evaporites from Jurassic to Aptian with uplift and erosion during the Albian. Transtensional Aptian–Albian minibasins align along the salt-rich rift margin fault zone. In the Aptian–Albian main rift large en echelon synclinal minibasins developed between salt walls, although Jurassic diapiric evolution is likely. Upper Cretaceous units locally record continuing diapirism. The Boucheville and Bas Agly depocentres, altered by synrift HT metamorphism, form the distal rift domain terminating south against the North Pyrenean Fault. The narrowness of the Pyrenean rift, shape of minibasins, en echelon oblique synclinal depocentres and folds coupled with a discontinuous distribution and intensity of HT metamorphism support a transtensional regime along the Iberia–Europe plate margin during late Early and early Late Cretaceous.

UK 1 Introduction French lawyer Bergier published the first work on Roman roads in 162210 having discovered the remains of Roman roads near Rheims. He was so taken with his finds that he began to investigate classical literature and monuments. Bergier's work influenced 17th and 18th century French roadbuilding which in turn influenced British roadbuilders Metcalf, MacAdam and Telford who adopted a scientific approach in developing road construction techniques in the 19th century which are essentially unchanged today. For this reason, an understanding of Roman road engineering is crucial in understanding how present day UK road construction technology evolved.
