Chapter 1 PHYLOGEOGRAPHY OF FINCHES AND SPARROWS Antonio Arnaiz-Villena*, Pablo Gomez-Prieto and Valentin Ruiz-del-Valle Department of Immunology, University Complutense, The Madrid Regional Blood Center, Madrid, Spain. ABSTRACT Fringillidae finches form a subfamily of songbirds (Passeriformes), which are presently distributed around the world. This subfamily includes canaries, goldfinches, greenfinches, rosefinches, and grosbeaks, among others. Molecular phylogenies obtained with mitochondrial DNA sequences show that these groups of finches are put together, but with some polytomies that have apparently evolved or radiated in parallel. The time of appearance on Earth of all studied groups is suggested to start after Middle Miocene Epoch, around 10 million years ago. Greenfinches (genus Carduelis) may have originated at Eurasian desert margins coming from Rhodopechys obsoleta (dessert finch) or an extinct pale plumage ancestor; it later acquired green plumage suitable for the greenfinch ecological niche, i.e.: woods. Multicolored Eurasian goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) has a genetic extant ancestor, the green-feathered Carduelis citrinella (citril finch); this was thought to be a canary on phonotypical bases, but it is now included within goldfinches by our molecular genetics phylograms. Speciation events between citril finch and Eurasian goldfinch are related with the Mediterranean Messinian salinity crisis (5 million years ago). Linurgus olivaceus (oriole finch) is presently thriving in Equatorial Africa and was included in a separate genus (Linurgus) by itself on phenotypical bases. Our phylograms demonstrate that it is and old canary. Proposed genus Acanthis does not exist. Twite and linnet form a separate radiation from redpolls. -

Distributional History of Eurasian Bullfinches, Genus Pyrrkula
52 Vol. 51 DISTRIBUTIONAL HISTORY OF EURASIAN BULLFINCHES, GENUS PYRRHULA By K. H. VOOUS Recently I have tried to reconstruct the distributional and evolutionary history of the genus Dendrocopos, pied woodpeckers (Voous, 1947). The aim of the following study, which is an attempt to reconstruct the course of the same phenomena in the genus Pywhula, bullfinches, is to ascertain whether the conclusions arrived at in the case of the Palearctic and Oriental members of Dendrocopos have a general value. As in the work on Dercdrocopos,patterns of recent geographical and ecological distribution and of character geography have furnished the basic facts of this study. The genus Pyrrhda has been chosen as the subject of this study because (1) its characteristics, which are well defined, clearly set it apart from other genera; (2) it has only a few members; (3) its taxonomy as well as (4) its geographical distribution do not show conspicuous complications; and (5) its members are exclusive inhabitants of forests, although they regularly descend to the ground for feeding. Only in the case of the European species was it necessary to make a thorough ex- amination of subspecies.In preparing this part I had the privilege of collaborating with Mr. P. A. Clancey of Glasgow. I am greatly indebted to him for his kind help. In this paper I have made use of the following terms as defined by Ripley (1945) : Interspecies: a species group or sympatric subgenus, containing a group of closely related, geographically overlapping species which have attained physiological isolation in nature. Emerge& interspecies: a speciesgroup containing a number of closely related, geo- graphically overlapping specieswith a marginal fringe of hybridization. -

Rowan berries are im- portant food of Fennoscandian Northern Bullfinches and show synchronised masting in annual fruit production over large spatial scales. Norwegian and Finnish annual berry abundance indices from 1972–2004 were used to test the hypothesis that poor rowanberry production in normal wintering areas was responsible for efflux of birds to other areas. Annual Finnish wintering bird surveys and catches at local bird observatories correlated with rowanberry abundance indices, supporting the prediction that highest Bullfinch abundance would occur in normal wintering areas in years with heavy rowanberry crops. -

Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) Vulnerability: Presumed Stable Confidence: Moderate The Snow Bunting is one of the first birds to return to their Arctic breeding grounds, with males arriving in early April. This species occurs throughout the circumpolar arctic and, as a cavity- nester, will use human-made nest sites (e.g. barrels, buildings, pipelines) as readily as natural ones (rock cavities, under boulders, cliff faces; Lyon and Montgomerie 1995). Snow Buntings consume a wide variety of both plant (e.g. seeds, plant buds) and animal prey (invertebrates). Their wintering range is centered in the northern continental US and southern Canada although it extends north into the low arctic in some places (Lyon and Montgomerie 1995). Current global population estimate is 40 million (Rich et al. 2004). Arctic Alaska (see Martin et al. 2009) is not likely to have a strong negative or positive affect on this species. Current projections of annual potential evapotranspiration suggest negligible atmospheric-driven drying for the foreseeable future (TWS and SNAP). Thus atmospheric moisture, as an exposure factor, was not heavily weighted in the assessment. A. Leist Range: We used the extant NatureServe range map for the CCVI as it matched the Birds of North America and other range descriptions (Johnson and Herter 1989). Human Response to CC: Increased human activity and infrastructure associated with human response to climate change could benefit Snow Buntings by providing increased artificial nesting habitat, as they are known to readily take advantage of human infrastructure (Lyon and Montgomerie 1995, J. Liebezeit, pers. obs.). Because it is unlikely that there will be significant development of this type in Arctic Alaska, the influence on this species would be Dietary Versatility: The Snow Bunting’s varied nominal. -

ACTION: Proposed rule. SUMMARY: We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), propose to revise the List of Migratory Birds protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) by both adding and removing species. Reasons for the changes to the list include adding species based on new taxonomy and new evidence of natural occurrence in the United States or U.S. territories, removing species no longer known to occur within the United States or U.S. territories, and changing names to conform to accepted use. The net increase of 59 species (66 added and 7 removed) would bring the total number of species protected by the MBTA to 1,085. We regulate the taking, possession, transportation, sale, purchase, barter, exportation, and importation of migratory birds. An accurate and up-to-date list of species protected by the MBTA is essential for public notification and regulatory purposes. The Status and Occurrence of McKay’s Bunting (Plectrophenax hyperboreus) in British Columbia. By Rick Toochin. Introduction and Distribution The McKay’s Bunting (Plectrophenax hyperboreus) is one of North America’s rarest passerine species. The entire breeding population of McKay’s Buntings is found on the isolated islands of St. Matthew and Hall Islands in the middle of the Bering Sea (Roberson 1980, Winker et al. 2002). A survey conducted in 2003 found that the world population is now known to be over 30,000 birds. (Rogers 2005). McKay’s Buntings have been found in the summer months on other Bering Sea islands, such as St. Paul, St. George, King and St. Lawrence Islands, but they are, by no means, annually occurring at these locations (Rogers 2005, West 2008). When they have been found in these other locations there are often no more than a handful of McKay’s Buntings in a given summer, and the birds that are located are almost always males (Rogers 2005). There have been some documented cases of McKay’s Buntings found on both St. Paul and St. Lawrence Island breeding with Snow Buntings (Sealy 1969, West 2008). As a result hybrid birds have been found in some years (Sealy 1969, West 2008). This has led some authorities to question if the McKay’s Bunting is in fact a subspecies of the Snow Bunting (Sealy 1969, Rogers 2005). For now the AOU still has the two species separated, but they are considered closely related to each other (Chesser 2013). Recent DNA research has helped show that McKay’s Buntings, though a close relative to the Snow Bunting, is, in fact genetically different enough to Snow Bunting that McKay’s Bunting should remain its own species (Maley 2004).
