Dainius Janenas RATA Director ^9 SWEDISH INTERNATIONAL PROJECT Nuclear Safety Published by: Swedish International Project Nuclear Safety •SUMMARY . •.•••-;•; • ' . .•;•••; .: ' v From operation of Ignalina NPP Lithuania has accumulated large quantities of low and intermediate level radioactive waste. The Strategy on Radioactive Waste Management emphasizes the necessity to be ready for the management of radioactive waste, which will result from the Ignalina NPP decommissioning starting in 2005. In order to implement provisions of the Strategy, Radioactive Waste Management Agency has started to prospect for a site suitable for the near surface repository. This Report comprises results of the area survey stage, which involves regional screening to define the regions of interest and identification of potential sites within suitable regions. The main goal was to define a few sites potentially suitable for constructing of the NSR. • •- . / • _•• . It was concluded that a vicinity of Ignalina NPP is among the best suitable regions for the near surface repository. At the present investigation level a ridge in Galilauke village has the most favorable conditions. However, Apvardai site is potentially suitable for the repository too. Draft Report of the present studies has been presented for evaluation at an international seminar organized jointly by IAEA, SIP and RATA and held on 3-4 March 2004 in Vilnius. All key institutional stakeholders took part in the discussions. The Report was updated taking into account given comments and recommendations. BACKGROUND From operation of Ignalina NPP Lithuania has accumulated large quantities of low and intermediate level radioactive waste. Since beginning of the NPP operation in 1984 all radioactive wastes are stored in storage facilities at INPP site. Safety analyses performed in 2000-2003 have shown that the existing radioactive waste storage facilities are not acceptable for long-term storage and can only be used as interim storage facilities for the time period ending 2010 [1]. In the Strategy on Radioactive Waste Management approved by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania in 2002 [2] it is foreseen to construct new repositories for radioactive waste and to retrieve, characterize and condition the short-lived radioactive waste accumulated in INPP storage facilities. The Strategy also emphasizes the necessity to be ready for the management of radioactive waste, which will result from the INPP decommissioning starting in 2005. All necessary studies on a repository for low- and intermediate- level short-lived radioactive waste should be performed until 2005 [2]. The NSR commissioning date significantly impacts the additional interim storage

  • One of the Oldest Village in the Nemunas Delta, Founded in the XV Century
RUSNE village Rusnė - one of the oldest village in the Nemunas Delta, founded in the XV century. This is the only city in Lithuania that is in the island. The modern bridge Atmata not always saves the local population from the spring floods. During the flood 40 thousand hectares of grassland is covered in water. People of Rusnė are kept safe from the floods by mound. Island has a Polders system equipped with 20 water lift stations. At the lake Dumblė the land surface is 1.3 m below sea level. During the summer Rusnė becomes particularly popular place. Tourists are coming not only from Lithuania but also from Germany, Denmark. In 2002, in Rusnė there was established an information center. The old tradition of fishermen revives – there was built and old sailing yawl according to the old drawing. In island Rusnė we can visit the restored church, the old post office, ethnographic K. Banys farmstead, Uostadvaris lighthouse (1876), the first water lifting station (1907). Rusnė - border town – on the other side of Skirvytė there is a region of Kaliningrad, Russian Federation. MINIJA (MINGE, MINE) village Minija is also called "Lithuanian Venice" because of its unique landscape. Village was fist mentioned in 16th century and originates for the river name, but earlier it was called only Minė. Germans called the village Minge. River Minija divides the village into 2 parts, but there are now bridges. Every house in Minija is facing the river and people say, that river is the street there. The town was flooded periodically. In 19th century there were 76 houses and more than 400 people lived in Minija.

Every year different national and inter- national sports events are organized here. The town hosted one of the stages of the 2011 FIBA European Men Basket- ball Championship, 2013 UEFA European U-19 Champion- ship matches, European U-17 Championship matches. In 2011, Alytus was declared the top sports town of Lit huania. Eišiškių, Šalčininkų, Dieveniškių, Lazūnų, Zietelos apylinkes į kietini mo plotą galima įskirti tik sąlygiškai, nes ten šių priebalsių kietinimas labai nenuo seklus, pVZ.: žamė, ažaras, žamas, šašbl, berža!is ir žiimė, šlire, beržii!is, ašeri's, šešeli (Eišiškės); žamė ir žiimė, šlire, beržii!is, šeiva (Vėžionys); žanijas ir šešta (Šalčininkai); parša!is, aršaĮi<J "veršelis", š3iva ir žiimė, žemaū, šiištas, veršii!is (Dieveniškės); žamė" zamė, šapeteis, šašbl, šašatas, šarb;'s, važa!is, naimažasnis ir ziimė, žemi'n, šešta, šeši, šiišetas, šeim{'na (Zietela) ir pan. • Master's Thesis in Global Studies Lithuania's “Nuclear”
Master’s thesis in Global Studies Lithuania’s “Nuclear” Town in a Global World Local Millenials’ Perceptions of Visaginas after the Closure of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant Goda Cicėnaitė June 2021 Lithuania’s “Nuclear” Town in a Global World Local Millennials’ Perceptions of Visaginas after the Closure of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant Goda Cicėnaitė Final thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of a MA degree in Global Studies Instructor: Jónína Einarsdóttir 30 ECTS Faculty of Sociology, Anthropology and Folkloristics School of Social Sciences, University of Iceland June 2021 1 Lithuania’s “Nuclear” Town in a Global World. Local Millennials’ Perceptions of Visaginas after the Closure of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant This final thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of a MA degree in Global Studies. The thesis may not be copied in any form without the author’s permission. © Goda Cicėnaitė, 2021 kt. 181191-4579 Reykjavik, Iceland. 2021 2 Ágrip “Kjarnorkubær” Litháens í hnattvæddum heimi: Viðhorf þúsaldarkynslóðar Visaginas til kjarnorkuímyndar bæjarins við lokun Ignalina kjarnorkuversins. Þegar eina fyrirtækið í iðnaðarbæ lokar, upplifa íbúarnir félags- og fjárhagslegar afleiðingar og sækjast eftir vinnu í nágrannabæjum eða borgum. Lokun Ignalina kjarnorkuversins hefur valdið kaflaskiptum í bænum Visaginas, sem tilheyrði kjarnorkuverinu. Missir aðal atvinnufyrirtækisins og rússnesk fortíð bæjarins hafði mikil áhrif á líf íbúana. Afskekkt staðsetning Visaginas og að rússneska hélst aðal tungumál íbúanna eftir að Litháen endurheimti sjálfstæði sitt, dró úr atvinnumöguleikum íbúa Visaginas í öðrum bæjum í Litháen. Fyrsta markmið þessarar rannsóknar var að kanna hvaða augum þúsaldarkynslóðin lítur náttúrulegt umhverfi Visaginas og byggðina í ljósi hnattvæðingar. Hitt markmiðið var að kanna afstöðu unga fólksins til hlutverks fortíðar Visaginas sem „kjarnorkubær“ í þróun bæjarins.
