Additional literature references treating Cuban Lepidoptera are also provided. The list is based primarily on literature records, although some collections were examined: the Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática collection, Havana, Cuba; the Museo Felipe Poey collection, University of Havana; the Fernando de Zayas private collection, Havana; and the United States National Museum collection, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC. Trapping Mocis Spp. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Adults with Different Attractants

MEAGHER1 AND PAUL MISLEVY2 1Center for Medical, Agricultural and Veterinary Entomology, Agricultural Research Service U.S. Department of Agriculture, Gainesville, FL 32608 2University of Florida, Range Cattle Research and Education Center, Ona, FL ABSTRACT Experiments conducted in a pasture agroecosystem in central Florida showed that two-com- ponent lures composed of acetic acid and 3-methyl-1-butanol placed in Unitraps collected adults of three species of grass looper. Mocis disseverans (Walker), M. latipes (Guenée), and M. marcida (Guenée) males and females were collected from July through November, with peaks from late September through late October. Other noctuid moths also were captured, but constituted less than 33% of the total moths collected. In 2001 and 2002, 67.7 and 72.4% of the Mocis spp. moths collected were females, respectively. Phenylacetaldehyde-baited traps collected fewer Mocis spp. moths. The trapping system suggested by our results will aid growers in monitoring for a pest complex that lacks commercially-available sex phero- mone lures. I nsects suf fer enormous losses due to diseases caused by fungi and bacteria and "The Entomogenous F ungi of Porto Rico" (1) were among the first subjects investigated at the Insu lar Experiment Station . The insects which are parasit ic or pr edaceous on injurious insects have been studied and reported, usua lly in publications dealing with the specific injuriou's insect, al tho in one instance, '' El Cucu hano," (2) the beneficial insect itself is discussed . The food of the "Birds of Porto Rico" (3) was studied by l\fr. Alex Wetmore and the results published in an extensive paper that is a mine of useful information. But of the two publications dealing with the food of· lizards, one ( 4) is ba'sed largely on field observations; and partly on suppositions and deductions which in some cases prove to be erroneous, the other ( 5) is written from the standpoint of the her petologist and the identifications of the insects are generalized and in only one case even generic. It is the purpose of the pre'sent paper to discuss the food of lizards from the standpoint of the economic entomologist, or in a broader sepse, of the agriculturist, basing the discussion on a rather considerab le numbe1· of examina tions of the stomach contents of the commoner species of lizar ds, and, so far as possible, on the specific identificat ion of the insects there found. -

Major insect pests of these grasses include grass loopers (Mocis spp.) and fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)), which annually may impose economic losses for beef cattle and hay producers. Population studies conducted during a 3-year period showed that both species had similar profiles with respect to larval population seasonality but not abundance. Plot studies with 4 stargrass and 4 bermudagrass lines showed that higher grass looper populations were found in star- grasses than bermudagrasses. Laboratory studies found grass loopers and fall armyworm larvae generally developed faster with larger weights on lines of stargrass than lines of ber- mudagrass. The two fall armyworm host strains also can differ substantially in their larval weight, developmental time, and survivability when grown on different lines of grasses. These results indicate that the selection of pasture grasses made by growers can signifi- cantly and differentially affect the population densities of these grass defoliators. The insects came from open sea toward the ship from all directions, attracted by the powerful light of the deck. Most insects collided with the hull and fell into the ocean, but we managed to capture and determine 17 (13 Hemiptera of a single species, three Lepidoptera of three species and one Odonata). With one exception, we are certain that none of the specimens caught originated from the ship. The geographic origin, most likely the coast of Brazil, and flight endurance of these insects were inferred using data on wind speed and direction, provided by the crew of the ship, and were reconstructed using Hysplit modeling of air current trajectories.
