20 UK Foodbanks

13 million people live below the poverty line in the UK

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. Trussell Trust foodbanks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in the UK.

In 2012-13 foodbanks fed 346,992 people nationwide. Of those helped, 126,889 were children. Rising costs of food and fuel combined with static income, high unemployment and changes to benefits are causing more and more people to come to foodbanks for help.

The Trussell Trust partners with churches and communities to open new foodbanks nationwide. With almost 400 foodbanks currently launched, the Trussell Trust’s goal is for every town to have one.

Matt Cameron, Regional Co-ordinator for Yorkshire and Humberside, is speaking about this challenging and valuable work in Quarry House at

GREEN Travel Planners Limited issues details of such campaigns to you because, to ensure customers of the co-op continue to receive a discount from Metro, we must provide evidence of what we have done to promote the use of public transport and to promote sustainable initiatives to all employees. On behalf of GREEN Travel Planners Limited, there are some ways that you can help us to gather the evidence we need, whether you buy a ticket with us or not. Please let me know if you take part in any of the initiatives we tell you about and please let us know if you already do anything to support sustainable travel, for instance, car sharing, walking to work, cycling to work.

22 Do you travel to work via bus or train and want to save yourself some hard earned cash?

If the answer is yes, Green Travel Planners sell both Metrocards and annual bus tickets from across the local network, including, , Keighley and District, Harrogate and District and Yorkshire Coastline tickets to DWP, CMEC, and DH,staff. Commitment to encouraging use of Public Transport by these employers allows us to sell MetroCards with15% off and up to 25% off other bus tickets.

Interested? Well all you need to do is contact your local travel plan co-ordinator for details of the tickets on offer and an application form – look out for information shared and displayed locally.

As part of the deal with Metro for the discount we need to encourage all members of staff to complete a survey (that takes no more than 5 minutes). This does not involve any confidential information.

So if you are a HASSRA member and also take advantage of the discounted tickets through the Green Travel Planners Cooperative, please do complete the survey at https://westyorkshire.itrace.org.uk/S727MW1.survey, and encourage your friends and colleagues to do so as well.

Applications for the discounted tickets accompanied by the relevant payment must be received no later than 12 March

23 It's Survey Time-West Yorkshire Travel to Work Survey The West Yorkshire Travel Plan Network is once again running its annual travel to work survey. The survey is a simple snapshot travel survey about how your employees travel to work and will only take a few moments for your employees to complete. Last week we emailed all participating Network organisations with either a link to the online survey or a copy of the manual survey form. If you haven’t received a copy of the survey please contact the Travel Plan Network team and we will happily provide you with all the information you need. To ensure the survey is a success at your organisation please can you encourage as many employees as possible to complete the survey before Friday 14th March. To find out more about the survey and for some simple top tips on promoting the survey read our survey news story.

Consultation on Cycle Super-Highway plans underway People’s views are being sought on plans for the £29m CityConnect cycle super-highway connecting Bradford and Leeds. After successfully securing £18.1m of Department for Transport’s Cycle City Ambition Fund investment for the 23km link, Bradford Council, Leeds Council and Metro are seeking local people’s opinions on the project’s impact. Consultation has started this week on the stretch of the CityConnect route between Thornbury and Stanningley. Issues being looked at include how the scheme might affect junction layouts as well as parking and access, while at the same time ensuring safety for cyclists, pedestrians and other road users. Visit the CityConnect website for details of consultation locations and times. Tour de France

40 Wine Club Friday 7th March Wines from Alsace

5.30p.m. in the Restaurant Meet from 5.00pm in the Woodpecker Bar

Presented by: Wines from Alsace – presented by Mick Morby Alsace is an exceptional area for wine making. Protected by the Vosges Mountains, this picturesque region is singularly blessed with enviable growing conditions: ancient soils, noble grapes and an extraordinary climate. Alsace is renowned for its white wines but it also has some delicious reds. For this fine wine event, we will be tasting six highly regarded wines from some of the best producers in region. An evening not to be missed. This is a high cost evening so deposits of £10 must have been made prior to the event.

What's Coming Up?

Thursday 20th March: Portugueses Wines– presented by Anne Grace In a world where international grape varieties like Chardonnay dominate, Portugal stands out by growing mainly local grape varieties. Port and Madeira have been exported to the UK for many centuries but now it’s time to discover some of Portugal’s best-kept secrets – their up-and-coming red and white wines.

This tasting will look at wines from the Douro, Alentejo and Minho regions of Portugal and will feature local grape varieties such as Aragonez/Tinto Roriz, Alvarinho, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira and Touriga Nacional. This is a low/medium priced event the cost to HASSRA members will be £7 - £10

Thursday 3rd April: Grand Tour of Italy – presented by Mike Ferguson On Thursday 3rd April come and join us on a Grand Tour of Italy. We will be tasting a range of wines from different areas of Italy, starting with something sparkling and finishing with a classic heavy duty red. We will be tasting wines from Piedmont to Puglia, and there will be some of the less well known grape types as well as some familiar favourites such as Chianti and Nebbiolo. Come and enjoy some of the best red wines Italy has to offer. The cost to Hassra Leeds members will be around £8 to £10."

53 54 55 BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS HASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity to participate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form.

1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the date first advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested.

2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of the group via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions.

3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer.

4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where there are sufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed.

5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will be liable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the undiscounted "non member" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes but travellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable.

6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the persons travelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase the insurance offered.

7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a single room. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share, they will not have to pay a single supplement even if no pair is available.

8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determine those successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then be processed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list.

9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the person who arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a member of the Committee.

10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before any unfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the closing date is reached, remaining places will be filled on a first come first served basis.

11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to the same destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.

12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to participate in an event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed.

13. The priority order will be: a) Organiser +1, b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary), c) Prior registered interest (ballot if necessary), d) Other Members, e) Non Member groups.

14. Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion for associate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment, on or before the closing date for the trip. Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing the application. The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips. Any such requirements will be notified in the advertisement. Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events. Formal complaints may prejudice an individual's eligibility for future trips.
