Throughout the fourteen years of its existence, encompassing the Irlande Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, the magazine covers a neglected period of transition in the evolution of modernism. Through his editorial n° 4 policy and a susceptible interpretation of the Zeitgeist, Lehmann voices the particular torments of his generation, too young to have participated in - 2011 the First World War, but deeply affected by it. -

VICTORIAN LEGACY CONFERENCE Organized by Professor Martin HEWITT All Saints College, University of LEEDS, 11-13 July 2005 * (Session : The Victorians in the 20th century) * Françoise BORT Université Paris-Est Victorian Legacy: the Lehmanns' Instructions for Use. (Tuesday, July 12th, 2005) The Lehmann siblings, Rosamond (born in 1901) and John (born in 1907), have always boasted their illustrious Victorian literary and artistic ancestry as descendants of William and Robert Chambers. The Chambers brothers have left their hallmark in the history of publishing, not only for their companionship with Dickens or Wilkie Collins among others, but also for their own entrepreneurial achievements. They counted authors like Thackeray and Robert Browning among their closest friends, launched the Edinburgh Journal and became part and parcel of Victorian letters and intellectual life. In fact, their lives and careers display but faint resemblances with John Lehmann’s beginnings as an editor. Unlike the self-made and self-taught Chambers, John was educated at Eton and Trinity College (Cambridge), and then worked for the Hogarth Press in 1931 and 1932 before he founded his own magazine New Writing in 1936. Rosamond, for her part, became famous almost overnight in April 1927, as the author of Dusty Answer1. The novel triggered one of the most resounding literary scandals in the 1920s and came to be considered as an epitome of the Zeitgeist. Above all, John and Rosamond Lehmann had in common a profound interest in emerging artistic expression, which makes it all the more surprising to see them recalling their Victorian ancestors whenever they tackled the subject of their own commitment to the craft of letters. -

"We talk to one another in novels," he said. In chapter one, the implications of this statement are discussed within the framework of the author-reader rela• tionship in fiction from Sterne to John Barth and Robbe-Grillet. By comparing Green with these novelists and others such as Jane Austen, Dickens, Henry James, and Virginia Woolf, one can consider and evaluate more effectively his techniques of communication. Some of the aspects of conversation as a living art as well as a literary art are also dis• cussed, with particular emphasis on the delight in process rather than in the finished product. -

G. Wells during a debate about the nature of the novel that helps to establish the canon of modern fiction. Whereas the canonical modernists – Conrad, Ford, Joyce, Woolf, Lawrence – follow James in devel- oping narrative and linguistic innovations to accommodate a newly scrupu- lous attention to epistemology and psychology, the seven writers surveyed here generally spurn stream of consciousness, often appear indifferent to the exploration of the psyche, and sometimes follow Wells in renouncing Jamesian formal unity. Thus E. M. Forster breaks with modernist practice in relying on a prominent, moralizing narrator, Wyndham Lewis attacks his contemporaries’ obsession with interiority, and Wells and Aldous Huxley embrace a didacticism at odds with reigning protocols. Ronald Firbank, Ivy Compton-Burnett, and Henry Green follow James in their attention to style, but they depart from modernist orthodoxy in representing surfaces rather than depths. In voice, structure, style, and characterization, however, a rebellious spirit in all these novelists challenges both inherited and emergent ideas of what a novel is and how a novel’s prose can read. -
The Evelyn Waugh Circle
The Evelyn Waugh Circle Acton, Sir Harold (1904-94), of Anglo-American parentage, was at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford and spent most of his life at the family horne, La Pietra, near Florence. As well as poems, novels and historical works, he published Memoirs of an Aesthete (1948), More Memoirs (1970) and a memoir of Nancy Mitford (1975). Asquith, Katharine (1885-1977), nee Horner, married (1907) Raymond Asquith (killed in action 1916), eldest son of H.H. Asquith, Prime Minister. A Roman Catholic convert, she lived at the Manor House, Mells, Somerset, inherited from her father, Sir John Horner; from 1949 Ronald Knox also lived there, and EW was a frequent visitor to the house. Balfour, Patrick (1904-77), author and journalist, was educated at Winchester and Balliol College, Oxford, and succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Kinross in 1939. As an Evening Standard corre spondent, he covered the war in Abyssinia. The character of Lord Kilbannock in the Sword of Honour trilogy is based on Balfour. Baxter, Beverley (1891-1964), born and educated in Canada, be came a journalist in England and served for many years on the staff of the Daily Express. Later he served as a Member of Parlia ment (1935-50) and was knighted in 1954. Beaton, Cecil (1904-80), photographer and stage designer. Educated at Harrow and Cambridge. Knighted in 1972. Beerbohm, Max (1872-1956), essayist, dramatic critic, parodist and caricaturist, greatly admired by EW from boyhood onwards. He lived mainly in Italy after his marriage in 1910, but often visited England. Bell, Clive (1881-1962), writer on art and a member of the Bloomsbury Group, married (1907) Vanessa Stephen, herself an artist and a sister of Virginia Woolf. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com John Lehmann was one of the most distinguished and discerning British men of letters of the mid-twentieth century. Renowned as a poet, novelist, critic, memoirist, and biographer, he wrote more than twenty-five books. However, it is as an editor and publisher that Lehmann is perhaps most highly esteemed, beginning with New Writing (and its associated titles), a pioneering biannual periodical that he edited from 1936 to 1946, and which featured works from such notable writers as Christopher Isherwood and Stephen Spender, among many others. Lehmann also edited the popular Penguin New Writing series of paperbacks from 1946 to 1950. He was also the managing director of Leonard and Virginia Woolf's legendary Hogarth Press, and founded his own publishing house, John Lehmann, Ltd. He re-launched the venerable publication The London Magazine in 1954, aimed at a "public interested in serious literature," where he remained as editor until 1961. While his three volumes of memoirs, published between 1955 and 1966, are mostly reticent about his sexuality, Lehmann's 1976 book, In the Purely Pagan Sense, provides a revealing and valuable portrait of gay life in England and pre-war Germany, written in the form of a novel. Lehmann also published several volumes of his own poetry, as well as acclaimed biographies of Virginia Woolf, Edward Lear, and Rupert Brooke. As a gay man, Lehmann once observed that he was "always looking for the friend who will give me the direct, warm and natural, entirely loyal relationship that I dream about." He was never entirely successful, however, in finding such a relationship. -

TranslatinG ‘SENSITIVE TEXTS’ Mary Wardle Sapienza University of Rome Italy [email protected] Just like ideas of ‘equivalence’, the concept of ‘sameness’ in translation is not a neutral, univocal one: its interpretation can shift both diachronically and synchronically, with a variety of factors, be they individual or collective, influencing the outcome. This paper intends to investigate a spe- cific example from one author’s work in translation with a view to highlighting the role played by social norms and ideological beliefs in the production and reception of translated texts. Rosamond Lehmann (1901–1990) was an English writer, close to the Bloomsbury Set and author of several popular, critically acclaimed novels. However, her ‘scandalous’ narratives – in- cluding extra-marital affairs, gay and lesbian characters and abortion – perhaps rather predictably, provoked some strong reactions in Britain. Although all her books were translated with great success in France, it is perhaps surprising that four of her novels were published in Italy during the years of the Fascist regime. This paper outlines the French and Italian versions of The Weather in the Streets, published in 1936 and 1938 respectively, within their historical context. Just like ideas of ‘equivalence’, the concept of ‘sameness’ in translation is not a neutral, univocal one: its interpretation can shift both diachronically and synchronically, with a variety of factors, be they individual or collective, influencing the outcome. This paper will investigate the Italian and French translations of the works of Rosamond Lehmann, and in particular her novel The Weather in the Streets, with a view to highlighting the role played by social norms and ideological beliefs in the production and reception of translated texts. -

OSCAR MARDELL Greener Pastures IN JUNE OF 2016, BRITAIN VOTED to leave the European Union, choosing to opt out of a diplomatic relationship conceived in order to curb the forces which devastated Europe during the Second World War. While the divorce is being settled, and that nation’s place in the world re-negotiated, the mythologies surrounding its ‘finest hours’ are begging to be rethought. As if on cue, New York Review Books have reissued the wartime novels of Henry Green. Henry who? Prefacing a 2005 collection of Green’s novels, Sebastian Faulks perfectly summarised the situation: ‘Henry Green’, wrote Faulks, ‘is a writer who always seems to need ‘introducing’, like a stranger at a party: dark, louche, awkward’. ‘Green’ was the penname adopted by one Henry Vincent Yorke. He was born near Tewkesbury in 1905, the youngest son of a prosperous industrialist—‘a mouthbreather with a silver spoon’, as he later put it. He attended Eton College then Oxford University, skipping most of his classes in order to nurture an obsession with cinema. In his final year of study, he wrote and published Blindness, a novel about a teenage art-lover who is blinded by attackers on his way home from school. Yorke eventually abandoned his degree altogether and took up work on the floor of his family’s factory, justifying the surprise decision in a letter to his father: ‘I want badly to write a novel about working men’. Living was the result of that experience, an exploration of class distinctions within an iron foundry in Birmingham. Yorke married his lover, ‘Dig’, in the year of its publication. -
