    The Evelyn Waugh Circle Acton, Sir Harold (1904-94), of Anglo-American parentage, was at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford and spent most of his life at the family horne, La Pietra, near Florence. As well as poems, novels and historical works, he published Memoirs of an Aesthete (1948), More Memoirs (1970) and a memoir of Nancy Mitford (1975). Asquith, Katharine (1885-1977), nee Horner, married (1907) Raymond Asquith (killed in action 1916), eldest son of H.H. Asquith, Prime Minister. A Roman Catholic convert, she lived at the Manor House, Mells, Somerset, inherited from her father, Sir John Horner; from 1949 Ronald Knox also lived there, and EW was a frequent visitor to the house.     OSCAR MARDELL Greener Pastures IN JUNE OF 2016, BRITAIN VOTED to leave the European Union, choosing to opt out of a diplomatic relationship conceived in order to curb the forces which devastated Europe during the Second World War. While the divorce is being settled, and that nation’s place in the world re-negotiated, the mythologies surrounding its ‘finest hours’ are begging to be rethought. As if on cue, New York Review Books have reissued the wartime novels of Henry Green. Henry who? Prefacing a 2005 collection of Green’s novels, Sebastian Faulks perfectly summarised the situation: ‘Henry Green’, wrote Faulks, ‘is a writer who always seems to need ‘introducing’, like a stranger at a party: dark, louche, awkward’. ‘Green’ was the penname adopted by one Henry Vincent Yorke. He was born near Tewkesbury in 1905, the youngest son of a prosperous industrialist—‘a mouthbreather with a silver spoon’, as he later put it. He attended Eton College then Oxford University, skipping most of his classes in order to nurture an obsession with cinema. In his final year of study, he wrote and published Blindness, a novel about a teenage art-lover who is blinded by attackers on his way home from school. Yorke eventually abandoned his degree altogether and took up work on the floor of his family’s factory, justifying the surprise decision in a letter to his father: ‘I want badly to write a novel about working men’. Living was the result of that experience, an exploration of class distinctions within an iron foundry in Birmingham. Yorke married his lover, ‘Dig’, in the year of its publication.

    Late Modernist Debuts Publishing and Professionalizing Young Novelists in 1920s Britain Marius Hentea In “Literature as a Profession,” a 1913 editorial in the Times, an unprec- edented surge of aspiring young writers was met with the strongest discour- agement: “There are now more youths than ever eager to be writers. There are more, indeed, than the public could possibly read, even if it regarded reading as a sacred duty; and it can only protect itself against their impor- tunities by a dazed indifference like that of harassed tourists in the East.”1 The imperial imagery—young writers were compared to colonial beg- gars, distracting the good people of England from the real sights they want- ed to see—revealed the Times’s strong feelings on the matter. A man with an imperial connection of his own, Edward Bell (his publishing house’s Indian and Colonial Library sold nearly 1.5 million books between 1894 and 1911), was equally emphatic in his rejection of young authors.2 He had edited Chatterton’s poetical works early in his publishing career, but in March 1914, when he heard of a proposal to turn the Author’s Union magazine into a platform for young writers, he did no more than quote Punch: “Don’t.”3 The assumption behind these rejections was that young writers lacked the experience to write anything worth reading. Yet in 1915, no doubt be- cause “our boys” were suffering in the trenches, youth was given a chance in Nisbet’s Writers of the Day series, whose guiding idea was to have young authors assess their established elders.

Doyle, founder and editor emeritus of Evelyn Waugh Newsletter and Studies, passed away on 22 July 2009. He was 83 years old. Paul Doyle earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Scranton and master’s and doctor's degrees from Fordham University. He taught at Fordham and St John’s University before moving to Nassau Community College, where he taught for over forty years. He won the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and was planning to teach this past autumn. Paul Doyle wrote or edited eighteen books, including Evelyn Waugh (1969), Evelyn Waugh: A Checklist of Primary and Secondary Material (with R. M. Davis, C. E. Linck & H. Kosok, 1972), A Bibliography of Evelyn Waugh (with R. M. Davis, D. Gallagher, C. E. Linck & W. M. Bogaards, 1986), and A Reader’s Companion to the Novels and Short Stories of Evelyn Waugh (1989). Paul Doyle also founded the Evelyn Waugh Newsletter in 1967 and edited it through 1998, when health finally forced him to stop.
