Unit Delta Plus http://www.delia-derbyshire.org/unitdeltaplus.php Unit Delta Plus www.delia-derbyshire.org Unit Delta Plus studio Unit Delta Plus was an organisation set up in 1966 by Delia Derbyshire, Brian Hodgson and Peter Zinovieff to create electronic music and also promote its use in television, film and advertising. The Unit Delta Plus studio was based in Peter Zinovieff's townhouse in Deodar Road, Putney, London. In 1966 they held an electronic music festival at the Watermill Theatre near Newbury, Berkshire, England. Delia said of the event: "We had an evening of electronic music and light effects. The music was indoors, in a theatre setting, with a screen on which were projected light shows done by lecturers from the Hornsey College of Art. It was billed as the first concert of British electronic music; that was a bit presumptious! John Betjeman was the re... he sat in the front row and w ent to s lee p... it was quit e a social occ asion." Million Volt Rave Flyer Perhaps the most famous event that Unit Delta Plus participated in was the 1967 Million Volt Light and Sound Rave at London's Chalk Farm roundhouse, organised by design ers Binder, Edwards and Vaughan (who had previously been hired by Paul McCartney to decorate a piano ). The event took place over two nights (January 28th and February 4th 1967) and included a performance of tape music by Unit Delta Plus, as well as a playback of the legendary Carnival of Light, a fourteen minute sound collage assembled by McCartney around the the time of the Beatles' Penny Lane sessions. Unit Delta Plus split in 1967 after a traumatic performance at the Royal College o f Art.

  • BBC Learning English Words in the News 17Th November 2008 Lost Beatles Record Still Exists
BBC Learning English Words in the news 17th November 2008 Lost Beatles record still exists Sir Paul McCartney has said he wants to release an experimental track recorded by the Beatles in the 1960s. The piece, called 'Carnival of Light', has only been heard once in public, more than forty years ago, and has never been released in any format. Rob Norris reports: It's the mythical lost Beatles track - the subject of rumour and speculation among the group's millions of fans worldwide for decades. Now, Paul McCartney has confirmed to the BBC that 'Carnival of Light' does still exist, and that he has the master tape. It's fourteen minutes long - a weird jumble of shrieking and psychedelic effects. Paul was asked to record it for an electronic music festival in 1967, where it was played only once. He told the BBC how he asked the other members of the Beatles to help him with it: MCCARTNEY: I said to the guys - look, a bit indulgent but would you mind just giving me 10 minutes? I've been asked to do this thing... All I want you to do is just wander round all of the stuff , bang it, shout, play it. Doesn't need to make any sense. Hit a drum, then wander on to the piano, hit a few notes and just wander around. So that's what we did and then we put a bit of echo on it. It's very free. Before he can release the track, he has to get permission from the other surviving Beatle, Ringo Starr, and the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison.

In creating this curriculum I sought to write lessons that follow the Colorado State Standards for music education on the secondary level. The lessons adhere to the standards: teaching about the elements of music, music technology, and music history through The Beatles as a secondary focus for engagement. I chose The Beatles because of their popular appeal and their contributions to the advancement of recording techniques. Each lesson has two prongs: the Colorado state standard and a corresponding selection from The Beatles. This strategy gives the student two lenses through which to absorb the material, and makes connections between different disciplines of music. John Lennon and Paul McCartney began playing music together in their youths, as early as 1957. George Harrison was quick to join the gang on February 6 1958, when he got the chance to show off his skills for John at a show. Richard Starkey, commonly known as Ringo Starr, was the last to join in 1962.1 They boys started out as a rock band playing covers of songs by the likes of Little Richard and Chuck Barry. Lennon and McCartney soon started penning their own music and lyrics, starting with “Please, Please Me” (1962).

  • Stefan Firca Dissertation
Circles and Circuses: Carnivalesque Tropes in the Late 1960s Musical and Cultural Imagination DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University by Stefan Firca , B.M., M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Professor Arved Ashby, Advisor Professor Graeme Boone Professor Danielle Fosler-Lussier Copyright by Stefan Firca 2011 Abstract Circus, fairground, carousel, carnival imagery is everywhere during the late 1960s: in cover art, song lyrics, band names and song titles, music criticism, names of music venues, festivals, movies, literature. From circus tents to clowns, from jugglers to magicians, from carousels to parades, an entire carnivalesque lexis seems to be at play in what is generally termed “psychedelia.” The current study attempts to read and offer “thick description” (Geertz) of this vocabulary as part of a larger cultural and countercultural imagination, and integrate musical manifestations of the period (popular psychedelia and avant-garde / experimental music) in a semiotic network of metaphoric representation. If language is nothing more than a chain of metaphors (Lakoff), it is nevertheless true that we often take such metaphors as “rock ’n’ roll circus,” “song-carousel,” “riot of sound” for granted, since they are so widespread and culturally shared that an explanation of their meaning may appear pedantic. But what do these word-images actually mean? What is the range of their connotations? What is the relationship between them? Why are they so frequent in the late 1960s? And how are these tropes translated or suggested musically? One possible answer to the last question involves the broad concept of circularity , emblematic for the psychedelic era: a round melodic motive or harmonic progression, ii a cyclic phrase articulation, a motoric-recurrent riff, a spiraling or whirling waltz in triple time.

  • Bill Harry. the Paul Mccartney Encyclopedia
BILL HARRY. THE PAUL MCCARTNEY ENCYCLOPEDIA INTRODUCTION Paul McCartney: Renaissance Man John Lennon's Aunt Mimi said she'd always remember me because I was the first person ever to call John a genius. There is no doubt that John was one of the most creative figures of twentieth-century popular culture. However, his tragic death elevated him to iconic status, with the result that the undoubted brilliance of his former partner Paul McCartney became overshadowed. To my mind Paul is also a genius and, when he used to write me letters during the early stages of the Beatles' career, I felt that his writing contained a delightful sense of humour, which, in some ways was equal to John's. The composer of classic popular songs such as 'Yesterday', 'Hey Jude', 'Eleanor Rigby', 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band', 'Lady Madonna' and 'Let It Be' was also the one who conceived a number of the major Beatles projects. Not only was Paul the man responsible for the ideas behind the Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road albums, plus the Magical Mystery Tour film, but he also sketched and drew the initial designs for a number of the Beatles' album covers. Paul also composed soundtrack music for the films The Family Way and The Honorary Consul. John initially became involved in experimental music when he composed a version of 'Revolution' for the November 1968 album The Beatles. However, Paul preceded him, becoming the first member of the Beatles to conduct experiments with sounds when he composed Carnival of Light.
