SUMMER 2017 “A Community of Care”

Tamijah was born in November 2003, three months before her due date. She weighed only a pound and a half. After spending months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Christiana Hospital, Tamijah was discharged with a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy. Tamijah’s grandmother Sandra gladly stepped in to care for her granddaughter since Tamijah’s mother needed to return to work to provide for her family immediately after leaving the hospital. Tamijah has been in her grandmother’s care ever since. Thirteen years later, in December 2016, Tamijah underwent surgery at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware. The procedure was done with focus on her gaining mobility, with the ultimate goal of being able to walk. An avid crawler since she was a toddler, Tamijah told her grandmother “I don’t want to crawl anymore. I want to walk!” After her surgery, she needed to attend extensive and frequent rehab and therapy. It was during their time traveling the two and a half hours from their home in Seaford, Delaware for appointments that Sandra learned about the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware. A mother whose daughter also had Cerebral Palsy suggested that they should “try it out.” They did try it out, and they share their thanks for finding us. Sandra says that being able to stay at the House has been a “huge help,” since continuing to make the long drive would have been a physical and financial hardship for their family. Equally as important, the pair has found a community of care, concern, and support from the other families, staff, and volunteers at the House. She expressed specific thanks to our volunteer van drivers, who made sure she and Tamijah got where they needed to go after Sandra’s car broke down in the winter. Tamijah is also thankful for being able to stay at the House. Her favorite parts are the play rooms, movie theater and Xbox. She also enjoys meeting the other families who stay at the House. Tamijah loves children and dreams of one day being a pediatrician in the NICU. Although Tamijah has been a patient of Dr. Miller’s at duPont Hospital for Childen since she was 3 years old, this year was the first time she stayed at the Ronald McDonald House. On June 22nd, Tamijah took her first step unassisted! She is looking forward to taking countless more steps as she works toward her goal of getting around without a wheelchair. And Sandra hopes that soon, the two of them will be able to travel together on their first flight and international trip – a vacation to Germany to visit family. Chair Paul D. The number of families served throughout the spring and William J. Farrell summer has been extraordinarily high. The House has often been at full capacity, and David Hancox has required the team to activate our hotel partnership program to help accommodate Tony Hill families during periods of high census. These are challenging operational issues, but J. Phillip Hough affirm the impact of the House on the lives of so many families whose children are Mark J. Lorenz receiving medical care. Thankfully, the staff and volunteers at the House continue to Rachel M. Macha rise to the occasion, overcoming these operational challenges, and supporting all of the William G. If you are a Delaware resident, you can read more about Direct Energy’s Our Partnership with plans to see if one makes sense for you and your family. If you make the switch, a donation will be a made to the House! To learn more, Direct Energy consumers can go to DirectEnergy.com/Delaware.

Last year, Delaware formally named Direct Energy as the “Electric Retail Supplier Exclusively Contracted by the State of Delaware.” As part of their community involvement, Direct Energy formed an ongoing partnership with the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware that includes cash donations for each Delaware resident who switches their energy supplier to Direct Energy. Direct Energy provided the Ronald McDonald House with an initial $10,000 charitable contribution and then pledged an additional $5 donation for each online customer enrollment, and a $2.50 donation for each offline customer enrollment throughout the life of the two-year program. To celebrate the kick-off of the new partnership, Direct Energy sent some superheroes our way for a party last summer. The event was a huge hit with the kids at the House and we were so excited to welcome them back for a second party this summer! Spider-Man, , Mrs. Incredible, and Michelangelo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles scooped out Direct Energy’s “lightning bolt” flavored ice cream and delivered a corporate gift from Direct Energy to show their support for families with seriously ill or injured children receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals. So far, Direct Energy has donated over $16,000 to help keep our families close. Events Recap

To celebrate the milestones of service achieved by the volunteers that help to keep families close, our staff and Board of Directors work together every year to host our Volunteer Awards Dinner. This year’s dinner was held on April 27th coinciding with National Volunteer Month. The Board of Directors prepared and served a wonderful dinner to thank our volunteers. They were led by Board Member, Family Service Volunteer, and local Jefferson Award recipient Allison Micich. Our theme for this year’s dinner, “Lights, Camera, Appreciation!” allowed our volunteers to arrive in style as a red carpet was rolled out for them to walk down toward the evening’s events. From helping with daily operations at the House seven days a week, to providing nightly meals, staffing special events, and bringing their care to the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms® throughout the state, the support and care volunteers provide is at the heart of what we do. In 2016, volunteers gave more than 26,000 hours of service, with an additional 15,500 hours given by community group volunteers. They helped to serve 2,013 families at the House and 11,990 families at all three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. The Heart of the Community Award recognizes individuals or groups from the community that volunteer their time through ongoing volunteer service projects. The Heart of the Community Award was presented to Grotto Pizza for their ongoing commitment to the House through their monthly contributions of pizza dinners for families. The President’s Award honors commitment and the inspiration to others to engage in volunteer service. The President’s Award was presented to the University of Delaware’s Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi for their continuing support of the House through volunteer service including hosting family activities, providing meals, and assisting with annual fundraising sales of Blarney the dog. This is one big family, and everyone helps each other out… everyone is one big team. Naming a Room in Perpetuity Naming a guest room in perpetuity is a meaningful way to remember a loved one. Recently, one of our guest rooms named in perpetuity is thanks to Ryan Pettit. Last year, Ryan named a room through hosting a golf tournament which raised $20,000. With this donation, Ryan not only named a room in perpetuity, but gave an additional $10,000 to support other capital needs. Ryan stayed at the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware while his daughter Brionna was receiving treatment at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Although Brionna passed during the Pettits’ time here, Ryan wanted to give back to the House in her memory. As a way to honor both Brionna and his late father, Ryan organized and sponsored the memorial golf tournament. We thank Ryan for his generosity. His gift will enable us to serve families at a time when they need it most. A gift of $10,000 names a guest room in perpetuity. For more information on naming a room in perpetuity, contact Barbara Loeslein 302-428-5331 or [email protected].

A LEGACY OF HOPE Thousands of families call the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware their “home-away-from-home,” however, Terry Smith refers to the House as “Our Place.” In 1991, Terry and Ben Smith began volunteering at the House just as the doors opened. Terry worked in the kitchen making sure everything was clean and shiny and Ben helped out as a handyman as well as served on the Board of Directors and as Board President. In 2010, Ben and Terry moved to Texas, but Terry continues to be involved, reviewing and editing the memorial and tribute lists for our newsletter. This process allows Terry to see how the House has grown and how individual donors have continued their commitments. In honor of Ben and Terry’s volunteer service, the House named an award in their honor. Tom Ferry, Rick Gessner, Ruth Fulmer, Anne Wright, and Meg Aument have been recipients of the “Terry and Ben Smith Spirit of Care Award.” Because of her experience at the House, Terry understands the needs of the families we serve and how many cannot make the If you are interested in making a Planned Gift through a Retirement requested donation of $15 per night.
