This is the last time I will be writing to you as Team Vicar as my retirement is imminent! I have now lived here for almost 12 years coming here as Team Vicar in the Wexcombe Team in September 2000. By 2002 the new larger team of churches was formed which included the Bedwyn Churches and St Katharines and the churches of the Wexcombe Team to form the present Savernake Team of eleven parishes. Over those years I have had the privilege of serving you and getting to know you. In the last 12 months I have been the only stipendiary priest here and so have been responsible for all eleven parishes as well as being Rural Dean for the Pewsey Deanery. Looking after the eleven churches has been a challenge but one I have enjoyed not least because of the people I have met. Being a parish priest is a great privilege because you become involved with so many people at all times of their lives, in sorrow and in joy. People allow you to share their deepest emotions and share in their family occasions and I am grateful to you all for all the many kindnesses you have shown me as I have worked alongside you. I now leave you in the safe hands of the new Team Rector Michael McHugh. Before I go I would like to invite you all to join me at my final Team Service on Sunday (5th Sunday) July 29th at 11am at St Mary’s Collingbourne Kingston. It was here that I was licensed by the Bishop all those years ago; some of you may remember the leaking font! After the service there will be a “bring and share” lunch in the Collingbourne Kingston Village Hall. Everyone is invited to this. Dick and I now move on to another stage of our lives as we move to the Scottish Borders and retirement. We do not know what the future holds but whatever happens we know that we have many happy memories of the last twelve years here in Wiltshire and we walk into the future with God. May God bless you all Mary 7 Your Church in July Peace, life, love is ours, Forgiveness, future, grace is ours Faith, hope, peace is ours Roddy Hamilton DATE PRAYER SERVICE FLOWERS CLEANERS SIDESMEN READINGS READERS & READERS 1st 6pm Songs all tbd tbd n/a July of Praise at St Mary’s Trinity 4 8th 11am David tbd tbd Dorothy Chris H July Special and Amanda service for Mary- Trinity children Vere 5 and families 15th 11am Vikki tbd Lesley Audrey July Family Lesley Service & Trinity Baptism 6 22nd 9.30am David David – 2 Cor ME Jessica John & July Holy 5:14-17 Janet Amanda Communion Trinity Chris –John 7 20:1,2,11-18 31st 5th Sunday n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a July 11am at C.bourne Trinity Kingston 6 8 THE PAST! Brian Edwards has given us a poem he wrote in 1952 while in the Army in Longmoor Camp. Called ‘Dance Macabre Progressive’ it is thought- provoking and clever, and you will find it displayed on the church noticeboard, together with Mike Beresford’s poem ‘Jubilee’. Jubilee photos – Thank you to everyone who brought such fascinating photos to our Nostalgia Evening. We are still busy reviewing and scanning them. We hope to compile a Village Scrapbook over the next few weeks – this will show how we were in the 1950’s as well as some images from 2012. We still don’t have any photos of the Chute celebrations in 1953 – maybe you can help with this? THE PRESENT! This July is a big month for the church in Chute! Our vicar will retire and move to Scotland, and we will miss her! Everyone should have received an invitation to the party at the Village Hall on Friday 13th from 5-9pm to say goodbye to Mary Edwards. We do need to know numbers for catering purposes so, if you haven’t replied already to a member of the PCC, please do so ASAP (the more the merrier)! We are also making a collection towards a present for her, so please also let us know if you would like to contribute. You will see above that we have a busy month anyway – and then the Revd Michael McHugh will be licensed by the Bishop of Salisbury at 7.30pm on Thursday 5th July as the new Team Rector of the Savernake Team (the group of 11 parishes to which Chute belongs) This will be in the church of Great Bedwyn (where he will live with his family) and anyone who would like to attend may do so. Mary’s last service in the Team will be on 29th July in Collingbourne Kingston at 11am, and of course everyone will be welcome. THE FUTURE! On 6th July, the advertisement for a new Team Vicar will be placed in the ‘Church Times’ but until an appointment is made (and it will take time) Michael will be the only full-time clergyman for the Team – and so he will be very busy! He will have help from Linda Dyson, and Robert Grist, and Alan Deboo, who are non-stipendiary priests, (and also Chris Stock who will 9 formally become licensed as a Licensed Lay Minister in October) but we cannot expect our pattern of services in Chute to remain the same and so, if you want to come to church after July, you will need to look carefully in the Chronicle to see what is happening and when! Michael McHugh is planning children’s activities for the Team on 5 Thursdays during August in the villages that have schools. More details later in this edition of the Chronicle but the first one will be in Collingbourne Ducis on 2nd August Finally, the date for Ride and Stride this year is Saturday 8th September. All over the country on that day people will be cycling, on horseback or walking from one church to another across any county or diocesan borders to raise money for their parish church and, in our case, for the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust. You will need to find sponsors, and you can plan your route to suit yourself, alone or with friends and family. It can be a great day out, and you meet many other people doing the same! Issue No. 239 Hill & Valley THE PARISH MAGAZINE OF HURSTBOURNE PRIORS, LONGPARISH, ST MARY BOURNE & WOODCOTT 50p June 2020 Hill & Valley Parish Magazine for Hurstbourne Priors, Longparish and St Mary Bourne & Woodcott June 2020 Dear Friends, How many of you remember playing Kim’s Game in your childhood? This is when various everyday objects are displayed on a tray. You look at them for a moment, then you have to turn away when one object is removed, turn back and remember which it is. Over the last 8 weeks, I wonder what you will have noticed is missing from our tray of pre-lockdown ‘normality’? I think some in our communities would put ‘an open church’. They have missed the opportunity to enter a place outside the home for prayer or reflection, not just a place to gather for worship. Up until lockdown we have known our churches as 'sanctuaries'; and in the tradition of the past, along with the churchyards, they are known as common ground. It also feels to me that we have lost something meaningful during these last two months. A place of ‘refuge’ has been denied to all of us, taking away the chance for anyone to seek ‘shelter’ or a quiet moment of prayer. A place anyone could go to. A sanctuary that could provide peace or comfort, away from what they faced in their everyday lives. But now we are on the threshold of ‘unlockdown’ and the common ground needs to be made safe. Guidelines will be there to protect the vulnerable. Our bishops have agreed that the door can be opened just a little and through it the clergy may go in alone to pray.

  • LCT10 Open Chalklands
LCT10 Open Chalklands General Description The Open Chalklands landscape character type is a large scale arable landscape, characteristic of the most extensively farmed chalkland areas, where the chalk geology is generally not masked by the deposit of Clay with Flints. The hedgerow structure is fragmented and commonly replaced by fences, adding to the open landscape character. A limited number of small hedged pasture fields are found adjacent settlements and farmsteads. Blocks or belts of trees occasionally break up this open landscape, but are infrequent with isolated woodlands often found adjacent to farmsteads. Small streams or winter bournes divide the type but generally it is noted for its dry valleys. The settlement pattern is scattered and dominated by large farms. There is an occasional large house with parkland found sited within a dry valley. A pattern of right angled roads, often running straight for considerable distances and with wide verges, is typical of the Open Chalklands landscape type. Location Open Chalklands are located within the central area of the Test Valley, mainly north of Broughton Down and around the southern edge of Andover. These Test Valley Landscape Character Assessment 2004 (updated 2018) LCT10: 1 areas are divided by the River Test and its tributaries and the winterbourne valleys. Within the Test Valley Borough there are 7 Landscape Character Areas as follows: LCA10A East Dean Chalk Downland LCA10B King’s Sombourne Chalk Downland LCA10C Thruxton and Danebury Chalk Downland LCA10D Leckford and Chilbolton Downs LCA10E Drayton Chalk Downland LCA10F Andover Chalk Downland LCA10G Cholderton Downs Physical Influences Geology and soils: Chalk with loamy and clayey soils.
