5 6 Team Letter

Mary Edwards Team Vicar, Savernake Team writes. . . This is the last time I will be writing to you as Team Vicar as my retirement is imminent! I have now lived here for almost 12 years coming here as Team Vicar in the Wexcombe Team in September 2000. By 2002 the new larger team of churches was formed which included the Bedwyn Churches and St Katharines and the churches of the Wexcombe Team to form the present Savernake Team of eleven parishes. Over those years I have had the privilege of serving you and getting to know you. In the last 12 months I have been the only stipendiary priest here and so have been responsible for all eleven parishes as well as being Rural Dean for the Pewsey Deanery. Looking after the eleven churches has been a challenge but one I have enjoyed not least because of the people I have met. Being a parish priest is a great privilege because you become involved with so many people at all times of their lives, in sorrow and in joy. People allow you to share their deepest emotions and share in their family occasions and I am grateful to you all for all the many kindnesses you have shown me as I have worked alongside you. I now leave you in the safe hands of the new Team Rector Michael McHugh. Before I go I would like to invite you all to join me at my final Team Service on Sunday (5th Sunday) July 29th at 11am at St Mary’s Collingbourne Kingston. It was here that I was licensed by the Bishop all those years ago; some of you may remember the leaking font! After the service there will be a “bring and share” lunch in the Collingbourne Kingston Village Hall. Everyone is invited to this. Dick and I now move on to another stage of our lives as we move to the Scottish Borders and retirement. We do not know what the future holds but whatever happens we know that we have many happy memories of the last twelve years here in Wiltshire and we walk into the future with God. May God bless you all Mary

THE PAST! Brian Edwards has given us a poem he wrote in 1952 while in the Army in Longmoor Camp. Called ‘Dance Macabre Progressive’ it is thought- provoking and clever, and you will find it displayed on the church noticeboard, together with Mike Beresford’s poem ‘Jubilee’. Jubilee photos – Thank you to everyone who brought such fascinating photos to our Nostalgia Evening. We are still busy reviewing and scanning them. We hope to compile a Village Scrapbook over the next few weeks – this will show how we were in the 1950’s as well as some images from 2012. We still don’t have any photos of the Chute celebrations in 1953 – maybe you can help with this? THE PRESENT! This July is a big month for the church in Chute! Our vicar will retire and move to Scotland, and we will miss her! Everyone should have received an invitation to the party at the Village Hall on Friday 13th from 5-9pm to say goodbye to Mary Edwards. We do need to know numbers for catering purposes so, if you haven’t replied already to a member of the PCC, please do so ASAP (the more the merrier)! We are also making a collection towards a present for her, so please also let us know if you would like to contribute. You will see above that we have a busy month anyway – and then the Revd Michael McHugh will be licensed by the Bishop of Salisbury at 7.30pm on Thursday 5th July as the new Team Rector of the Savernake Team (the group of 11 parishes to which Chute belongs) This will be in the church of Great Bedwyn (where he will live with his family) and anyone who would like to attend may do so. Mary’s last service in the Team will be on 29th July in Collingbourne Kingston at 11am, and of course everyone will be welcome. THE FUTURE! On 6th July, the advertisement for a new Team Vicar will be placed in the ‘Church Times’ but until an appointment is made (and it will take time) Michael will be the only full-time clergyman for the Team – and so he will be very busy! He will have help from Linda Dyson, and Robert Grist, and Alan Deboo, who are non-stipendiary priests, (and also Chris Stock who will 9 formally become licensed as a Licensed Lay Minister in October) but we cannot expect our pattern of services in Chute to remain the same and so, if you want to come to church after July, you will need to look carefully in the Chronicle to see what is happening and when! Michael McHugh is planning children’s activities for the Team on 5 Thursdays during August in the villages that have schools. More details later in this edition of the Chronicle but the first one will be in Collingbourne Ducis on 2nd August Finally, the date for Ride and Stride this year is Saturday 8th September. All over the country on that day people will be cycling, on horseback or walking from one church to another across any county or diocesan borders to raise money for their parish church and, in our case, for the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust. You will need to find sponsors, and you can plan your route to suit yourself, alone or with friends and family. It can be a great day out, and you meet many other people doing the same! Forms and more information available from Amanda. Amanda Holroyd

Trinity MMcH Service Baptism Matins MMcH ME RG AD 29th July 8th after 11am Farewell Service for Mary edwards at Collingbourne Kingston Trinity 11 Chute Parish Council A Meeting of Chute Parish Council took place on June 14th at Chute Village Hall. Below is an extract of the minutes. The full version of which will be available on the Chute Website. Planning Applications: The following application was supported by Chute Parish Council E/2012/0723 Remove No 4 Lower branches of Sycamore Tree to prevent overhanging boundary Lambourne House Upper Chute. The Chestnut Tree on Upper Chute Village Green The condition of the Chestnut Tree is being closely monitored by both the Parish Council and by the Wiltshire Council Arboricultural Expert. The tree has a large cavity in the main trunk and upper stem with heavily weighted large main limbs which stretch towards the road and north east. We are currently getting a quote to reduce the crown weight and sail area, which in turn should reduce the risk of branch/stem failure. As this species does not resist the spread of decay particularly well, the cavities will continue to develop and increase in size. It is therefore strongly recommended that children do not use the tree to swing from or as a play area as if in the event of an accident, the Parish Council will not accept liability or responsibility no matter however caused. The date of the next meeting is July 12th to which everyone is welcome as usual. Carolyn Wall Clerk to Chute Parish Council

12 Police Report The Diamond Jubilee was a great success. My hope is that the passing of the Olympic Torch next month will be equally memorable. There have been overnight burglaries at two rural post ofices recently. In both cases a silver or white coloured car was seen in the vicinity. People have been going house to house offering to prune trees. Be aware that these are often unscrupulous tradesmen who do a poor job and charge exorbitant prices. It is far better to have work done by a known contractor, better still to go on the recommendation of a friend. The latest line used by deception burglars is to pose as police officers, and say they have found children with a large amount of money and offer to check the victim’s coat pockets and wallet or handbag, to see if anything is missing. They gain entry to the house, give the impression of checking, but actually steal money. There has been a theft of a staddle stone from the Conholt area. A man was assaulted on Hatchett Hill, Lower Chute, suffering bruising, broken bones and damage to his personal property. Metal hot water tanks were stolen from two empty cottages in Upper Chute. Conditions were cold, windy and at times wet, but due to all your efforts the Fete was a success. The net income is similar to last year. Would the Chute organisations who wish to make a bid for a distribution of Fete funds please submit them to Barry Caddick at Highlands, Forest Lane, Upper Chute or to [email protected] by Thursday the 19th July. An identifiable project requiring funds would assist the committee to decide on the allocations. Again many thanks. It has been suggested that next year, we hold the fete at our twin village “Chute Les Mimosa” nestling on the southern slopes of the hills behind St Tropez. Perhaps, this can be discussed at the Wash Up meeting which will be held at 8.30pm on July 24th at the Cross Keys Inn. - All are welcome. Barry Caddick

Thank you 1) Many, many thanks to all the people who assisted and made such wonderful cakes for the Childrens’ Jubilee Party, even the weather was kind to us and the children had a great afternoon 2) A big thank you to all the Ladies (and Gentlemen)who managed magnificently in very cramped conditions to help make the Tea event at the fete run as smoothly as possible. Everyone showed such good humour despite the dreadful weather and made my job so much easier. Thank you also to all those who provided such delicious cakes for the tea tent in the Pavilion; I was amazed at the excellent variety on offer and general praise from all who bought them. Marilyn

The Queens Jubilee Celebrations I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped and attended to make the Chute Queens Jubilee Celebrations such a success plus of course the weather! The Chute villages certainly joined together to celebrate the Jubilee, with over 60 children attending the Children’s Tea Party, 40 stunning scarecrow’s, 6 pram race entries, a packed Church at the nostalgia Service and 400 attending the Chute Causeway party! Although we received a grant from Wiltshire Council to fund the majority of the celebrations, special thanks must also go to Rick Wall, Jim Haines, Ann and Bill Catt, John Dawson and David Brown for their help in setting up and dismantling the various events. Paul Horton for printing the flyers, Marilyn Cripps and Louise Stormer for organising the children’s teas, Tim Harker for the loan of the Generator, Ken White Transport for supplying the trailer for the band, Jonny Sykes for the use of the land and building the bonfire on the Causeway, Chute Club for providing the bar and the Cross Keys team for helping with the Hog Roast. Thanks also go to Gus White and his school band, our superb local band, Wheezy Joe, who can be seen playing regularly at the Hatchet, and to Nigel Mills and his band Thick Cut. Scarecrow Competition The Scarecrow Competition (judged by Eddie Quirk, David Pike and Jim Haines) was a very close won fun competition with 40 excellent entries from all of the villages. After much deliberation from our erstwhile judges, the winners were the Struthers family in Upper Chute, Tim and Annie in Lower Chute and Helen Taylor and Bruni in Chute Forest.

20 The overall winner was Tim and Annie at Keepers Cottage. Congratulations to everyone for entering. The Pram Race In between the heavy showers that dominated Saturday of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration, the mad, the fit and those up for a challenge met outside the Hatchet for the start of what is fast becoming a Chute tradition: the Pram race. Six teams of all ages and in varying degrees of costume set off at a scorching pace along the flat. The first crash happening before the bend in Chute Standen. The famous Chute hills soon took their toll as the teams spread out. Cheering crowds watched the Cross Keys Finish flag wave the winners. Although the fastest was Jonny Sykes he was then disqualified by his wife, for having his dog in the pram (who bailed out halfway) instead of a person! First Prize then went to the Merritt’s, with Gemma and Di pushing Ella Shadwell. Second place went to ‘Ahoy there!’ commanded by Captain Meghan Foxen with Rachel Trickett and Marie Holland-Pemble pushing Holly Dawson in their superbly disguised pram as a canoe and excellent costumes winning them prize for the Wackiest wheels. The prize for the youngest team went to Iggle Piggle with Megan and Jack Fox, Zoe Bradbury and Adam Withers who ran a very good time despite full costume and a combined age of just 50 years. The prize for the bravest effort went to Freddie Gillum-Webb who dressed in full combat gear and gas mask and pulling the heaviest of 4 wheeled vehicles imaginable made it all the way to a great cheer! Congratulations to all the competitors for being such good sports and our thanks to the Hatchet and Cross Keys for providing the start and finish. Chute Jubilee Souvenir Mugs For Chute children who did not attend the Children’s Party and would like to receive a souvenir Jubilee Mug, please contact me on 730758.

Editor’s Note: Carolyn Wall We Hope you enjoy the Jubilee colour spread in this edition of the Chronicle. 21 Chute Jubilee celebrations Chute has always been known for it's warmth and hospitality. These qualities were needed in abundance if we were to celebrate successfully the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen over the three days 2nd to 4th June. Happily the village lived up to it's reputation and the outcome proved to be a great success all round. Congratulations are therefore due to the many people involved for arranging the excellent series of festivities over the week end which were enjoyed by a healthy turnout of villagers. In particular, special mention should be made of the Parish Clerk, Carolyn Wall, and her helpers for coordinating the arrangements and in particular for the excellent party on the Causeway including the lighting of the Beacon, the highlight of the evening. To Amanda Holroyd and her support team for providing a charming Church service involving the young and the playing of the Anthem on the handbells finishing off the evening with delicious sandwiches and a glass of wine. Thanks to those others for their contribution to the Children's Tea party with Bouncy Castle, the Soap Box Derby, the Pram race and the Scarecrow competition, some quite brilliantly done. If I have omitted to include someone important - mea culpa! Well done Chute, long may your generosity continue, and thank heavens for it. Bill Withall

22 Olympic Torch Relay

The Chairman and Councillors of Ludgershall Town Council are very honoured that the Olympic Torch Relay will be coming through Andover Road, Ludgershall on Wednesday 11th July 2012, late afternoon. The Town Council would like to invite residents of the Chutes to join them from 3-30pm lining Andover Road to celebrate the ‘once in a lifetime’ event.

The Town Council will be operating a temporary free car park at the Recreation Ground, Dewey’s Lane, Ludgershall, as the St James Street car park will be closed on the day to allow other family events to take place.

After the Torch Relay, Ludgershall Town Council propose to continue celebrating with a community street party; everyone is invited to this event as well, more details will be available nearer the date.

International news comes to Chute! Many will recall the news story from last September when only hours after they had arrived at the Kiwayu beach resort in Kenya, six Somali pirates burst in on Judith and David Tebbutt’s room, near the Kenyan-Somali border. David was tragically shot dead while Judith was kidnapped and only released in March this year, after payment of a ransom. David and Judith, and their son Oliver, lived in Chute Forest approximately 30 years ago; Judith recently sent the following note to Sheila and Ken Yelf: “Thanks so much for your card and kind words. Ollie and I are taking each day as it comes, but are comforted by all the well-wishers who are passing on their support. Thanks to all in Chute, please pass on my thanks.”

JULY 15TH CHUTE VILLAGE HALL 11AM-1PM £5.00 PER CAR Tables for hire £1.00 if you do not have your own REFRESHMENTS AVAILABLE

SET UP FROM 10AM

24 Chute CC v Wilton CC, 27th May The Cross Keys Inn sponsored Chute team won the toss and elected to bat on a dry, flat track that was marginally too long – 74’ stumps to stumps instead of the mandated 66’ (22 Yards)!. While Colin Shubrook was controversially out LBW, Charlie Haines (27) and James Lloyd (38) amassed 51 in the first 10 overs of this 35 over match. Paul Struthers marked up 22 before being plumb LBW, and Chris Orange 11, but none of the other batsmen got out of single figures. Good bowling by the Swan Inn sponsored Wilton’s Paul Fleckney (2 for 26 off 5) Alex Small (2 for 18 off 6) and Mike Hislop (2 for 12 off 3) restricted Chute to a below par 153 all out in 31 overs. In response, Wilton began to wilt under a combination of heat and Chute’s bowling attack, losing wickets in the 10th and 11th overs, by which time the score was only 32. Ashley Elliott led his troops well in recovery, with excellent support from Jonathan Small (35), but at the end of the 35 overs, with Elliott on an unbeaten 55, Wilton’s score was 152 for 8, just a single run behind Chute’s earlier total. James Lloyd was the outstanding Chute bowler (39 for 4 off 7) but there was support across the bowling depth, notably Paul Burnell (2 for 32 off 7) and Colin Shubrook (1 for 13 off 7). Young Hugo Orange from Chute, and Ashley Elliott from Wilton, were duly nominated as Cross Keys Inn Men of the Match. An excellent game, played in the best spirit, and decided by the final delivery of the day – great cricket!

FC Chute Congratulations to Chute Athletic and Chute Sports who finished 1st and 2nd in Division 2 of the local Sunday League, securing promotion. A great season for both teams, very well done.

25 Congratulations! Possibly rather belatedly, but warmest congratulations to George Humphreys of the Cross Keys Inn for recently winning the Tidworth & District Chamber of Commerce and Barclays Business Prize Also to David Brown for being runner –up in the Paul Oatway Good Neighbourliness award for his long commitment to Upper Chute. Both very well deserved!

Kittens available! Now 5 weeks old. 5 kittens in total, 3 of which are still available, and ready for viewing. Mother is a brown tabby and most friendly. Chute Wednesday Club Our trip on Wednesday June 20th to The Rural Life Museum at Farnham was a very pleasant one, we saw many interesting artefacts some dating back to the 1800s. There were also over 30 buildings including village hall, chapel and a schoolroom. We were lucky to have a nice warm day and the museum was well worth a visit. On Wednesday July 18th 2012 we have a cruise on the River Hamble with lunch on board. This is usually a popular trip so book your seat early if you would like to come, there may be some seats for non -members, so it would be worth a try. Eileen Soper 730698
