AASR-Newsletter 20 (November 2003) 1 Jacob Kehinde Olupona AASR-President FROM THE CHAIR In February 2004, AASR will meet in Ghana to deliberate on the West Afri- can situation and to examine the role of religion in the social and cultural transformation of the region. The meeting also culminates our efforts to convene meetings in the three major regions of AASR activity on the conti- nent - Southern, Eastern, and Western Africa. I trust and hope that a good number of you will come. There are several reasons why we choose the top- ic of religion and social transformation. First, there is an explosion of religi- ous organisations and movements in West Africa – especially Pentecostal and Charismatic churches, Islamic groups, and neo-traditional religious movements. This exponential increase is unprecedented in West African history. With large number of adherents comes also physical growth of de- nominations, mosques, and temples in West African urban centers. Remark- ably, many religious organizations command larger numbers of constituents than some popular West African politicians and political leaders command. However, during the last two decades a sobering rift has risen between unprecedented growth and the mobilisation of West African masses to de- velop social and cultural transformation comparable to this growth. West Africa is a region embedded in war, violence, and enormous economic ‘crises’ certainly requiring critical intervention. Participants at the conference will examine possible roles religion may play in tackling these issues, as much as how religion itself is impli- cated in these crises. We are delighted that many members of AASR in Af- rica, Europe, and the United States indicated strong interests in attending this significant regional meeting! While in Ghana, members will also deliberate on the future of AASR, especially as we prepare for the IAHR Congress in Japan. -

A study searching for power relations in different levels of society Ewa Einarsson Abstract This study aims to search for patterns that demonstrate power relations. It specifically seeks to identify patterns in the power relations in the Rohingya conflict and understand the established power relations at different levels in society, which could provide a picture of the social world within the context of historical, ethnic, cultural, religious and political circumstances. Moreover, this study illustrates the Rohingya population’s experience with relations of power. The ongoing conflict in Myanmar, which is based on religion, ethnicity and politics, is seemingly without any solution. Myanmar is depicted as a country that has lost both hope and legitimacy for the political system and has reduced chances to establish a society in which all the minorities are included across the spheres of society. Assessing State Fragility in Myanmar Ahead of the 2020 Election INAF 5499: Policy Paper December 11, 2019 Zahura Ahmed, Janice Fu, and Gladys Omage Zahura Ahmed is a second year MA candidate at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University. She holds an undergraduate degree in International Development with a minor in Business Administration from the University of Ottawa. Zahura has worked in Bangladesh in the areas of migration and labour regulation. She has experience in various project management and policy analysis roles with Global Affairs Canada and the International Development Research Centre focusing on evaluation, food security, health, and education. Zahura organized the University of Ottawa’s International Development Conferences in 2014 and 2015, the largest of their kind in Canada. Her passion is working with youth to foster a more holistic, critical understanding of international development and global issues. Zahura can be reached at [email protected] Janice Fu is a second year MA candidate at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Social Sciences in International Development and a minor in Political Science from the University of Ottawa. Murphree University of Washington Abstract Imagining the Buddhist Ecumene in Myanmar: How Buddhist Paradigms Dictate Belonging in Contemporary Myanmar Daniel P. Murphree Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Walker Family Endowed Professor in History Laurie Sears Department of History This paper argues that the model of an “Ecumene” will aid external interpretation of the Myanmar political process, including the beliefs of its leaders and constituents, the Bamar. Myanmar as Ecumene better articulates Bama constructions of society, including governance, in that it resituates the political process as a Buddhist enterprise, shifting “Buddhist nationalism” to an imagined “Nation of Buddhists.” It also provides the rational for othering of religious minorities, such as the Muslim Rohingya or the Christian Chin. Utilizing ethnographic, historical, and textual source material, I show how the Bamar of Myanmar understand their relationship with the State, with one another, and with minority groups primarily through Buddhist modes of kingship and belonging. The right to rule is negotiated through the concept of “moral authority.” This dhamma sphere exists as a space to contest power legitimation, but requires the use of Buddhist textual and historical concepts provided in the dhammarāja or Cakkavattin model of Buddhist kingship, The Ten Virtues, the Jātakas, and the historical figures of Aśoka and Anawrahta. -

ABSTRACT BEST PRACTICES OF CHURCH PLANTING: A CASE STUDY OF ECWA AND OTHER CHURCHES IN THE WEST COAST REGION OF THE GAMBIA by Lawrence B. Jah The church is the primary vehicle of our Missionary God in fulfilling his redemptive purpose for the unreached, unchurched, disconnected and broken world in contemporary times as this. The irony, however, is that, even though Christianity had reached the West Coast Region of The Gambia for over two hundred years, nevertheless, Christians are barely eight percent of the population of 1.9 million, while Islam is ninety and Traditional Worshippers two percent. This is compounded by the fact that, the majority of pastors whether ECWA or not, in this geographical location, are non- Gambians. Ironically, most of these pastors are engaged in reaching out to believers who are already in a particular church setting, thereby forsaking their heavenly assignment of sharing the unchanging message of salvation to the unreached people groups among the Muslims in the West Coast Region of The Gambia. This study is therefore critical for all Pastors, Church Planters, Missiologists and the Priesthood of Believers, as it opens their eyes to the fact that Muslims are an integral part of God’s Missional mandate (Matt.28:18-20), and they could be won over for Christ with the help of the Holy Spirit, if only the best practices of planting indigenous churches are implemented in the targeted population of this study. The relevance of this project is underscored by the fact that, Islam is not only the seconod largest religion in the world (1.8 billion), but the fastest growing religion globally, as evident in The Gambia, a country with a population of 1.9 million. -

Muslim and Christian Relations in The Gambia: Worldwide Lessons in Respect and Tolerance Robert White II Why I went to The Gambia is a rather difficult question to answer. One would think that as many times as I have been asked, I would have at least composed a good story by now. But the truth is, I did not know precisely why I went. What I did know is that when an opportunity like this comes by, you do not let it slip through your fingers. I had a premonition that I would grow as a person in a way that I could not here in the United States, but exactly how, I was unsure. I knew that I would gain a new perspective on life, new eyes with which to see and understand the world, but again, how exactly that would happen was still a mystery. What I did know was that at least part of my history stems from African soil -- a land untouched by my African turned African-American family since they departed generations ago. I knew that I would be the first to return, and I could be that starting point that allowed and encouraged generation after generation henceforth to make that journey -- the White family’s hajj to our own Mecca. I knew that since my collegiate years began I have been on a constant quest to learn about and understand myself. We are products of our history, and because my life had been shaped even before my very conception, journeying to Africa had become crucial. -

Prof. Muham- mad Khalid Masud retired as the Academic Director, and Prof. Peter van der Veer stepped down as ISIM’s co-director. They have both left their marks on the formative years of this young institution. The workshop “Islamic Law for Muslim Minorities” held in May, 2003, was an appropriate event to hon- our Prof. Masud’s contributions to ISIM. Asef Bayat, Professor of Sociology and Middle East Studies at the American University in Cairo, was appoint- ed the new Academic Director and the ISIM Chair at Leiden University.
