The fifth-year Goldeye has allowed just three combined earned runs over his past two starts. McGovern has struck out 12 and walked just one in 13.0 innings during that stretch. McGovern allowed nine earned runs in just four and two-thirds innings in two abbreviated starts at the beginning of the season. The 31-year-old ironed things out with a pair of bullpen appearances in which he recorded four of his five outs via strikeout. The slider has always been McGovern’s bread and butter pitch, but Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney believes the increased use of a change-up has played a major role in McGovern’s turnaround. “Just from watching, the change-up is the difference,” Forney said. “He’s got a good fastball and a good slider. He uses his fastball to both sides of the plate and he’s got a firm slider. But if he’s not using a change-up, then he really doesn’t have a pitch to pull a hitter forward. He’s done a really good job working in that change-up.” Forney added that increased change-up use doesn’t necessarily have to be excessive in order to be effective. During his July 19 start against Sioux Falls in which McGovern fanned nine Canaries, McGovern threw 12 change-ups out of 99 total pitches, or roughly 12 percent. That 12 percent, however, can be enough to help a starting pitcher navigate a lineup multiple times on days when he may not have his best stuff. “If you’re not really on top of your game with command, and everything is kind of the same speed and on the same plane from the middle of the knee to the belt, it’s hard to get hitters out that way if you can’t pull them forward,” said Forney. “You don’t have to be committed to going down and in on every right-handed hitter with the slider. Just hit that ‘back door,’ because (Kevin) does have good command of his slider, and mix in a healthy dose of change-ups.” The length of McGovern’s last two starts has also been a positive sign. The Philadelphia, PA native logged six-plus innings in each of those starts, and has been among the American Association leaders in innings pitched in each of the past five years. “I never really worry about pitch count with Kevin,” Forney said. “Kevin’s strong. He competes really well, and gives you everything he has from pitch one to pitch 130 if you leave him out there. I thought his velocity and arm speed has been the same from start to finish his last two times out.” DOUBLE HEADER TODAY The Goldeyes and Saints were originally scheduled to begin their three-game series Friday evening, but a travel-related issue prevented the Goldeyes from arriving in Fargo in a timely manner. The clubs will play two seven-inning games this afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Goldeyes’ charter bus suffered a blown tire a few hours into their return trip from Rosemont, IL early Friday morning. The team eventually reached North Dakota around 2:30 p.m. McGovern faces Saints’ right-hander Eddie Medina in the opener, while Frank Duncan takes on right-hander Nick Belzer in game two. The Goldeyes entered Saturday in first place in the American Association, and had a seven-game winning streak snapped by the Chicago Dogs in the nightcap of a double header on Thursday. Winnipeg combined for 10 home runs in the three-game series at Impact Field, including three by catcher John Nester. The games can be heard live on 93.7 FM. DOGS SNAP GOLDEYES’ STREAK AT SEVEN JASON YOUNG – WINNIPEG GOLDEYES – THURSDAY, JULY 30th ROSEMONT, IL – The Chicago Dogs (10-12) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 13-8 at Impact Field Thursday evening in a seven inning contest. The loss snapped the Goldeyes' winning streak at seven games although Winnipeg (16-9) still leads the American Association standings by one game. Dogs centrefielder Michael Crouse hit the first pitch of the bottom of the opening inning onto the left field concourse for a home run. The Goldeyes tied the game in the top of the second inning when Roy Morales doubled into the right field corner to plate Logan Hill , then took a 2-1 lead when John Nester scored on a Jordan George sacrifice fly, also to right. Winnipeg added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning. They went up 3-1 when Nester hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Kyle Martin to come home. Then Morales once again drove in Hill with a sharp single to right. Chicago would blow the game open in the bottom of the inning when they would cross the plate eight times. First Victor Roache homered with a man on to make the score 4-3 Goldeyes before Garrett Hope tied the game with an RBI single to right field that scored Harrison Smith. A two-run, two-out single by K.C. Hobson and a three-run home run off the bat of Tyler Ladendorf gave the home team a 9-4 lead. The Goldeyes responded in the top of the fifth inning when Nester hit a three run shot - his third home run of the series - off former Major League left- hander Casey Crosby. That cut Chicago's lead to 9-7. The Dogs quickly replied however, as Edwin Arroyo hit a two-out, two-run double that scored Smith and Crouse to make the score Chicago 11 Goldeyes 7. Seven of the Dogs' runs were scored with two out. Roache would move into a tie for the league lead when he hit his second two-run home run of the game and seventh of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Chicago a 13-7 edge. Martin hit his fourth home run of the season in the top of the seventh inning to make it 13-8 Dogs and round out the scoring. It was the Goldeyes' tenth home run of the series. Justin Kamplain (1-1) took the loss in relief of starter John Gorman . Gorman struck out seven in three-plus innings, all within the first seven outs he recorded. Jake Cousins (1-0) was awarded the win in a scorer's decision as Dogs starter Luke Westphal exited after four innings. The Goldeyes now return to their hub city of Fargo, North Dakota where they will host a three-game weekend series with the St. Paul Saints. Friday's game gets underway at 6:00 PM with lefty Kevin McGovern (0-1, 5.58) going up against Eddie Medina (1-3, 7.00).
