What is “Creative Placemaking”? The term “creative placemaking” is used commonly in community development and city/urban planning. But what does it really mean? How will you know it when you see it? Creative Placemaking is generally understood as the use of arts and culture by diverse partners to strategically shape the physical and social character of a place in order to spur economic development, promote enduring social change and improve the physical environment.1 1. Use of arts and culture. This could involve a painter, musician, sculptor, historian, architect – or any other expression of “arts and culture”. The project could be many things including a mural, a street carnival, busker musicians on a street corner, or a public art sculpture about the place’s history. Artists are involved in the planning, execution and activity. 2. Diverse partners. Contributors to projects might include neighborhood residents, businesses, non-profits, churches, government agencies, etc. Diverse partners who invest time, talent and/or financial support will strengthen the project and take greater ownership in its maintenance and stewardship long-term. 3. Shape a place. The combination of arts, culture, and diverse partners can convert an under-utilized place and make it something useful, safe, beautiful and vibrant. 4. To spur, promote and improve. Whether the project is big or small, low-budget or very expensive, successful creative placemaking projects attract people. People want to be near other people. Urban Density, Creativity, and Innovation
URBAN DENSITY, CREATIVITY, AND INNOVATION May 2007 Brian Knudsen, Richard Florida, Gary Gates, and Kevin Stolarick Abstract: Geographers and social scientists have probed the effects of agglomeration and spatial clustering on innovation and economic growth. Economists and others have identified the role of knowledge spillovers in driving the innovation process. While innovation is thus assumed to be a function of proximity, there has been little systematic research on the role of density in innovation. Thus, this research investigates density, and more specifically the density of creative workers, as a key factor influencing regional innovation. It uses principal components analysis to create and implement a composite measure of density and presents a model of innovation as a function of creative-density. Statistical analyses including multivariate regression finds that density and creativity separately and jointly affect innovation in metropolitan areas. The regression analysis finds a positive relationship between the density of creative workers and metropolitan patenting activity. This suggests that density is a key component of knowledge spillovers and a key component of innovation. Keywords: Creativity, Density, Innovation, Learning, Spillovers 1 I. Ever since Alfred Marshall, geographers have examined the economic consequences of dense linkages in industrial and economic agglomerations. These geographic agglomerations create external economies of scale through the sharing of technology and managerial expertise, thus increasing the productivity of inputs. For the past two decades, economic geographers have been especially interested in the rise of specialized innovation districts in the innovation process. -

Gentrification, Displacement & Creative Placemaking: Evaluation Methods for Nonprofit Arts and Cultural Organizations by Grace Komarek-Meyer [email protected] Capstone Research Report Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Nonprofit Administration Degree in the School of Management directed by Dr. Marco Tavanti San Francisco, California Summer 2019 1 Abstract Gentrification, Displacement & Creative Placemaking: Evaluation Methods for Nonprofit Arts and Cultural Organizations focuses on the cultural strategies of creative placemaking projects, the role of the nonprofit organization in combating gentrification and displacement, and the task of evaluation and measurement program impact of creative placemaking projects. The first section of this report contains a literature review that is divided into two main focuses: (1) the history, context, and research of gentrification and displacement, and (2) Creative Placemaking and cultural strategies to support community development and resist the negative effects of gentrification and displacement for community members, neighbors, and key stakeholder groups. The second section of this report contains primary data collected in the form of three expert interviews with nonprofit arts and cultural organizations and one urban planning professional. The final component of this report consists of a set of recommendations for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations to take into consideration when carrying out various creative placemaking projects. 2 Acknowledgments I would like to thank my fellow cohort members in the Masters of Nonprofit Administration program at the University of San Francisco’s School of Management for their continued support and generosity over the past year and a half. Skovbro Danish Centre for Forest, Landscape and Planning, Department of urban and regional planning, Denmark Abstract Planning policies in many European countries advocate for the Compact City or some sort of compaction process, as a strategy to obtain a more sustainable urban development, It contrasts the car-oriented urban sprawl of many modern cities, creating longer distances between urban functions, poor access to facilities and services, less efficient infrastructure provision, loss of open land, social segregation, etc. A Compact City policy in contrast should by regeneration and densification of the urban area crei~te the opposite, thus contributing to a more sustainable development in its broadest sense, social, economic and environmental, This paper explores the implications of urban densification, Based on a case study of a Copenhagen district, the paper will show the pros and cons of urban densification and the impacts on the urban environment, focussing on the local urban environment. The current focus on research and innovation for smart specialisation strategies is the latest manifestation of this trend. By putting PPI processes at the core of regional and local development initiatives to support innovation, governments can go beyond priority setting to become active stakeholders engaged in entrepreneurial discovery processes. In this paper we offer a new conceptualization of how such smart specialisation strategies, as an example of a sub- national innovation policy, can help articulate demand for innovation. The paper presents an evolutionary framework that relates regional specialisation processes with the scale and scope of the demand associated to that specialisation. Agriculture in the Appalachian Region: 1965-2000 Dale Colyer West Virginia University Abstract: Agriculture in the Appalachian region has progressed since the ARC was established in 1965 when it was characterized by small farms with low incomes that contributed to the Region’s high rate of poverty. However, the region’s agriculture remains relatively small compared to that of the United States with an average farm size of 152 compared with 487 acres. The area is more dependent on animal agriculture with three fourths of it income compared to half for the nation. Farm operators obtain a large share of their income from work off-farm. However, farms in the region have become more specialized and oriented more toward market activities. In the United States in particular, fixed-guideway transit’s land use-shaping capability has been an important justification and goal for transit investment. In fact, today’s U.S. federal funding policies increasingly focus on achieving transit-oriented real estate development near new transit infrastructure. However, the widespread implementation of transit and land use coordination practices has been considered an uphill battle. The academic literature suggests the most effective practice may be for U.S. transit planners to locate transit stations where pre-existing conditions are advantageous for real estate development or transit investments can generate the political will to dramatically alter local conditions to make them amenable to real estate development. Their work is helping managers effectively use tools such as tree mastication and prescribed fire to help these communities become more resilient in the face of invasive weeds. Other research is finding ways to reestablish native vegetation on sites where weedy invaders have pushed the community past the point where it can recover on its own. RUSNAK* The public lands of the United States have always provided the arena in which we Americans have struggled to fulfill our dreams. Even today dreams of wealth, adventure, and escape are still being acted out on these far flung lands. These lands and the dreams-fulfilled and unfulfilled-which they foster are a part of our national destiny. They belong to all Americans. 1 I. INTRODUCTION For some Americans, public lands are majestic territories for exploration, recreation, preservation, or study. Others depend on public lands as a source of income and livelihood. And while a number of Americans lack awareness regarding the opportunities to explore their public lands, all Americans attain benefits from these common properties. Public land affect all Americans. Because of the importance of these lands, heated debates inevitably arise regarding their use or nonuse. The United States Constitution grants to Congress the "[p]ower to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the... Property belonging to the United States." 2 Accordingly, Congress, the body representing the populace, determines the various uses of our public lands. While the Constitution purportedly bestows upon Congress sole discretion to manage public lands, the congressionally-enacted Antiquities Act conveys some of this power to the president, effectively giving rise to a concurrent power with Congress to govern public lands. On September 18, 1996, President William Jefferson Clinton issued Proclamation 69203 under the expansive powers granted to the president by the Antiquities Act4 ("the Act") establishing, in the State of Utah, the Grand * B.A., Wittenberg University, 2000; J.D., The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, 2003 (expected). -
