  • Saronic Gulf Islands – 1 Week Itinerary
Saronic Gulf Islands – 1 week Itinerary The islands of the Saronic Gulf are the most easily accessible islands by sailing yacht from Athens. The Saronic Gulf and the nearby Argolis prefecture of the Peloponnese mainland are an ideal destination for shorter trips from Athens and are also recommended for less experienced sailors due to the short distances involved and the relatively mild winds in comparison to other sailing areas in Greece. You can start your sailing trip from Alimos marina and visit the islands of Aigina, Spetses, Hydra and Poros with two more stops in Ermioni and Epidavros located on the adjacent Peloponnese coast. This itinerary is ideal for a week long sailing charter. For those with only a few days any of the above destinations may be included or omitted as time permits. For those looking for a longer two week charter in the same area the historic cities of Monemvasia and Nafpleio on the second leg of the Peloponnese are easily included. More details on this extended charter itinerary are available here: Saronic & Eastern Peloponnese Itinerary A brief description of the islands and their highlights are included below along with a relevant map with sailing distances and some suggested links for further information. Happy sailing! The islands in detail Aegina Some 18 nautical miles from Athens, Aegina is a popular first and/or last port of call for sailing charters starting and ending in Athens. A site not to miss is the impressive Temple of Aphaea built in the 5th century BC. Aegina is also famous for its fantastic pistachio nuts, the island's soil being considered perfect for their cultivation, so be sure to pick up a bag or two to take with you! Poros Poros is a cosmopolitan island and very popular with the sailing crowd with many choices for good eating and drinking in the main town's promenade and side roads.

The festive ceremony took place before a gathering of the School's trustees, family and friends. Ward Canaday was honored for almost 40 years of service to the School, during which he served as its President and then its Chairman. Canaday, who was chairman of Willys-Overland Motors, is particularly remembered for his energetic support of the excavations in the Agora and the recon struction of the Stoa of Attalos, a project which satisfied both his interest in Greek archaeology and his desire to assist in pro moting Greek tourism. Because of his out standing work for Greece through the American School, he was awarded the Grand Cross Order of the Phoenix and Honorary Citizenship of Athens. Before cutting the ribbon on the door and welcoming guests into " Canaday House," the honoree's daughter, Doreen Canaday Spitzer, spoke the following words: In 1948 I came back to Greece, after an absence of 10 years, with my husband. Summary of petition The petitioner refers to a number of environmentally damaging activities conducted in the Ermioni municipality, in particular the pollution of groundwater, as a consequence of inadequate waste management, including an illegal dump and a lake of waste. The petitioner points out that the drinking water from the municipal water supply is harmful and that the inadequate treatment of waste water is one of the reasons for the serious pollution in the Bay of Argolis. He further explains that uncontrolled building activity in the local coastal and woodland areas is leading to the destruction of the natural environment and local archaeological monuments. As the responsible Greek authorities, to whom the petitioner has already appealed, have taken no action in response to this situation, the petitioner calls on the European Parliament to intervene with a view to ensuring that EU legislation on the environment is enforced in connection with the above activities. 2. • Greek War of Independence (1821–1832) by Ioannis Zelepos
Greek War of Independence (1821–1832) by Ioannis Zelepos This article deals with developments leading up to, the unfolding of and the outcome of the Greek War of Independence which began in 1821, while focusing in particular on the international dimension of the conflict. Just as diaspora communities in western and central Europe who had been influenced by the French Revolution of 1789 had played a central role in the emergence of the Greek nationalist movement, the insurrection itself also quickly became an international media event throughout Europe. It was the European great powers who ultimately rescued the rebellion (which was hopelessly divided and which had actually failed militarily) through largescale intervention and who put the seal on Greek sovereignty in 1830/32. The emergence of Greece as a European project between great power politics and philhellenism had a profound effect on the further development of the country. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. • 7-Day Yacht Charter Itinerary
Saronic Gulf Islands, Greece 7-day yacht charter itinerary X Athens (Piraeus) Attica GREECE Aegina Peloponnese Epidavros Kea Poros Ermioni Kythnos Hydra Spetses 3 4 Epidavros Epidavros is home to a unique 4 century BC ancient amphitheatre. It is a large, remarkably well preserved construction, capable of accommodating 14.000 people, known for its fabulous acoustics. Sitting on the top tier on one end, you can talk to someone opposite from you without having to raise your voice. Eerie sensation. Quality of sound coming from the stage is on a par with the best modern venues, where they use sophisticated equipment. Other highlights include Sanctuary of Asclepius and the ancient Sunken City, starting metres away from the beach. You don’t really need diving gear to explore it, a snorkel and mask would do. 5 Poros Poros is in the south-west of the Saronic Gulf. It is not one, but rather a pair of islands connected by a bridge: larger Kalavria, carpeted with verdant forests, and smaller, craggy Sphairia, with a bustling picturesque town rising amphitheatrically from the harbour. Opposite from Poros, just 10 minutes away by sea, you reach the Peloponnese coast with its famous lemon grove. If you are travelling in May, be prepared to smell the enticing aroma of lemon blossoms as you sail along the coast in your luxury yacht. 6 Spetse Spetses is a quaint little island propitiously located near the entrance into the Argolic Gulf. In spring and summer pine forests, wild rosemary, oleander blossoms and sea breeze give Spetses its distinct, ‘spicy’ smell, which, according to the legend, was the reason the island received its name – Spetses, or spices – from the Venetians.
