Geologic Map of the Phoenix Mountains, Central Arizona Julia K. Johnson, Stephen J. Reynolds, and David A. Jones Arizona Geological Survey Contributed Map 04-A Tucson, AZ 2003 Introduction The Phoenix Mountains, located within the Phoenix metropolitan area of central Arizona, are a northwest-trending, uplifted fault block that extends for about 13 km (8 miles) from Moon Hill in the northwest to Camelback Mountain in the southeast (Fig. 1). The area includes a main range, with 420 m (1,378 ft) of local relief, as well as several isolated peaks. The geologic mapping for this study covers the main part of the range, including (from northwest to southeast) Moon Hill, Shaw Butte, North Mountain, Stoney Mountain, Dreamy Draw, Squaw Peak, and the informally named Quartzite Ridge. The main goals of this study were to document the bedrock geology, reconstruct the geologic history, and produce a 1:24,000 geologic map of the range. The area contains a remarkable stratigraphic sequence that records the formation of continental crust in the region as it evolved from an oceanic setting to a more continental setting. The rocks have been cleaved and steeply tilted, providing a well-exposed traverse through this exceptional sequence. The range also contains spectacular Proterozoic (Precambrian) structures, which document the extreme deformation that affected the crust soon after it had formed. Lookout Moon Mtn. • The Digital Media and Learning Competition, Now in Its Second Year
Supported by Administered by The Digital Media and Learning Competition, now in its second year, is an annual effort designed to find — and to inspire — the most novel uses of new media in support of learning. In April 2009, the Competition awarded $2 million to individuals, for-profit companies, universities, and community organizations for projects that employ games, mobile phone applications, virtual worlds, social networks, wikis, and video blogs to explore how digital technologies are changing the way that people learn and participate in daily life. To broaden the search for innovative ideas, this year’s Competition was expanded to include international submissions and proposals from young people aged 18-25. The 19 winning projects are those that best engaged the theme of “participatory learning,” or the ways in which new technologies enable learners to contribute in diverse ways to individual and shared learning experiences. The Competition is supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and administered by the Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory (HASTAC). Winners of the Competition were drawn from two categories: Playpower is helping people create educational 8-bit games. Innovation in Participatory Learning ($30,000 to $250,000) Photo credit: Derek Lomas. Artist: Daniel Rehn and Young Innovators ($5,000 to $30,000). Innovation awards support projects that demonstrate new modes of participatory young people aged 18-25 to think boldly about “what comes learning, in which people take part in virtual communities, next” in participatory learning and to contribute to making it share ideas, comment on one another’s projects, and advance happen — will aid recipients in bringing their most visionary goals together.

  • The Superstition Mountains: What Future Use Will Best Serve Arizona?
[c. 1962] THE SUPERSTITION MOUNTAINS What Future Use Will Best Serve Arizona? A Special Report By Rep. Morris K. Udall The population of Arizona is increasing by some 60,000 people every year -- equivalent to the 1960 populations of Flagstaff, Prescott, Yuma and Safford combined. By 1970 our population will move well beyond 2,000,000. Additional land for commercial and residential purposes will be required. Existing facilities for every public need, including recreation and parks, will feel increasing pressures. Those of us entrusted with present day leadership in Arizona affairs ought to peer ahead now and then, as best we can, and take a long-range view. This report is an attempt to fulfill part of that responsibility. The press of population and our nation's diminishing recreational resources throughout the country have made Congress and the President anxious to undertake a long-range program of resource planning. If Arizona has any aspirations and needs in this field, the next few years will be the time to act. I expect that more new national parks, monuments and recreation areas will be created in the next 5 years than in the last 30. By 1964 a new National Recreation Area will come into being around Powell Lake behind Glen Canyon Dam. The 87th Congress has established Cape Cod National Seashore; it is considering and will probably establish new national parks at Point Reyes, California, Padre Island, Texas, and the Utah Canyonlands within the near future. The Wilderness Bill, a central part of this bi-partisan effort, has already passed the Senate and should pass the House before adjournment.
