Diocese of Bristol Application Pack for a Vicar of the Parish of St Matthew and St Nathanael, Kingsdown, Bristol Page 13 CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES Our outreach and ministry to children and their families is key to us. Over the past three years, the Church has funded a full-time Children’s, Families and Youth Minister to oversee and develop this work. They have been supported by a wonderful group of volunteers with a variety of skills, all of whom seek to provide children and families with a great start to their walk with Jesus. Sunday Groups are led by enthusiastic, caring leaders and include: • Crèche for babies and small children during the morning service in a dedicated room at the back of the worship area, run by parents and some occasional helpers. • 4s–11s meet with their leaders in the hall during part of the 10.30 service upstairs. The session normally begins with all the children together before groups split by activity or age. Activities include drama, games, singing, painting, model making, storytelling, Bible study. Children then rejoin their parents upstairs for the rest of the service including for Holy Communion on the first Sunday of the month. Those who have agreed with their parents and with the Vicar and have completed the preparation are invited to receive communion. All others are welcomed for a blessing. King’s Kids is a long standing, well known and highly valued Toddler group with regular contact with over 80 parents or carers and children, and weekly attendance of approximately 35 children and 30 adults. We aim to foster this relationship, and build further links for families to continue their engagement with St Matthew’s activities, perhaps through a new parenting course. We have a small number of actively engaged young people aged 10-18. We aim to grow this area of ministry to ensure that our strength in number and provision for children can be sustained throughout their journey into teens and beyond. The young people meet weekly on Sundays, when they enjoy fellowship with each other, space to seek and connect with God, and time to consider the impact of faith on their daily lives. We organise special projects in consultation with the young people, such as a Bible- themed animation project and a photography exhibition, and we offer opportunities for young people to bring their friends to socials, retreats, and away-days.
