  • 'Creating Connections' Five Week Discipleship Course
‘CREATING CONNECTIONS’ DISCIPLESHIP COURSE - COURSE GUIDE ‘CR E ATING CONNECTIONS’ FIVE WEEK DISCIPLESHIP COURSE www.bristol.anglican.org ‘CREATING CONNECTIONS’ DISCIPLESHIP COURSE - COURSE GUIDE PAGE 1 OF 2 INTRODUCTION Welcome to the Diocese of Bristol ‘Creating connections’ Discipleship Course resource. The Discipleship course is themed around our diocesan vision, ‘Creating connections’, and leads participants to consider what it means to be a disciple connected to God, each other and our communities. It is our prayer that, as small groups meet together across the Diocese to spend time exploring God’s word through this resource, we would discover afresh what it means to be a follower of Christ bearing witness to His name. Each session is accompanied by a leader’s guide which includes the suggested elements of each session: • A hospitality idea and introductory activity to help people to connect and build relationships with each other. • A Bible study and prayer activity to help people explore and deepen their connection with God. Each study has been written by a different member of the Bishop’s Staff Team. • A topic question for groups to discuss and a challenge for people to undertake during that week, to help them to connect with the communities of which they are a part. Each topic’s introduction has been written by Janey Hiller. You are free to edit the session as you see fit to meet the needs of your group. Each session is also accompanied by a participants’ sheet which includes the questions for the Bible study. Again you are free to edit and adapt these questions as you feel appropriate.

  • The Enthronement of the 56Th Bishop of Bristol
The Enthronement of THE RIGHT REV EREND VIVIENNE FAULL th The 56 Bishop of Bristol in her Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, Bristol THE SERVICE AT WHICH THE NEW BISHOP IS WELCOMED INTO THE DIOCESE Saturday 20 October, 2018, 2.30pm THE DEAN’S WELCOME Welcome to your Cathedral Church. The first Bishop of Bristol, Paul Bush, was consecrated on 25 June 1542 and came to a monastery that had been deserted for two years, newly made a Cathedral. The demands of city and diocese were too much for a reclusive scholar and he quickly withdrew to his manor at Abbots Leigh. At her consecration, Bishop Viv was reminded that bishops lead us, knowing their people and being known by them. Before this service began she was met in the heart of the city by its people. In this service you will hear again and again +Viv’s resolution to be servant of diocese and city and to be with us. Successive bishops have been great friends and supporters of their Cathedral Church. Robert Wright raised huge sums for repairs and a new organ in 1630. At other times, the relationship between bishop and Cathedral has been more difficult. In the eighteenth century Bishop Newton despaired of his absent dean. Today, we rejoice in the fact that the Cathedral is the Bishop’s Church. When +Viv knocks, three times, at the great west door and waits for entry, we will act out the fact that she recognises the Cathedral has a life and ministry of its own and yet is also hers.

  • Martyrology 12 09 19
Martyrology An Anglican Martyrology - for the British Isles 1 of 160 Martyrology Introduction The base text is the martyrology compiled by Fr. Hugh Feiss, OSB. Copyright © 2008 by the Monastery of the Ascension, Jerome, ID 83338 and available online at the website of the Monastery of Christ in the Desert. The calendars of each of the three Anglican churches of the British isles contain varied group commemorations, I suggest these entries are read only in the province where they are observed and have indicated that by the use of italics and brackets. However, people, particularly in the Church of England, are woefully ignorant of the history of the other Anglican churches of our islands and it would be good if all entries for the islands are used in each province. The Roman dates are also indicated where these vary from Anglican ones but not all those on the Roman Calendar have an entry. The introductions to the saints and celebrations in the Anglican calendars in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in Exciting Holiness, ed. Brother Tristam SSF, The Canterbury Press, 1997, have been added where a saint did not already appear in the martyrology. These have been adapted to indicate the place and date of death at the beginning, as is traditional at the reading of the martyrology. For the place of death I have generally relied on Wikipedia. For Irish, Welsh and Scottish celebrations not appearing in Exciting Holiness I have used the latest edition of Celebrating the Saints, Canterbury Press, 2004. These entries are generally longer than appear in martyrologies and probably need editing down even more than I have done if they are to be read liturgically.

CHURCH OF IRELAND PRESS OFFICE Church of Ireland House, 61 – 67 Donegall Street, Belfast BT1 2QH www.ireland.anglican.org http://twitter.com/churchofireland Tuesday 17 July 2012 From The Most Revd Alan Harper, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland and co-signatories as listed: Dear Secretary General, We refer to the continuing plight of the residents of Camp Ashraf/Liberty and wish to express deepening concern about the worsening humanitarian situation confronting many defenceless people. We are particularly alarmed by recent reports of a press conference recently held by high ranking officials of the State Department of the United States of America in which it appeared that the residents of Ashraf and the leadership of the PMOI were threatened with armed intervention risking a potential massacre on or after July 20 2012. We strongly condemn the threat of force or the use of force directed towards the people of Camp Ashraf whose status as refugees has been recognised by the United Nations. We therefore call upon you, Secretary General, and Secretary of State Clinton immediately to intervene. Iraq must be pressed to abide by its international obligations and accord full respect to the human rights of Iranian refugees in Iraq. It is wholly inappropriate to blame the victims of oppression for the crimes of their oppressors as appears to be the position adopted by the two high ranking US officials. We note that a similar rationale was offered for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, on the grounds that it is appropriate that one man should die on behalf of the people.

  • Cathedral Food Collection Centrediocese of Bristol
Cathedral food collection centre by Oliver Home - http://www.bristol.anglican.org/2013/cathedral-food-parcel-collection/ Cathedral food collection centre Bristol Cathedral has opened its doors as a drop off point for food parcel donations for FoodBanks, as churches lead efforts to combat food poverty this Christmas and remind people that Christmas Starts With Christ. Members of the public are invited to leave food donations of any size at the Cathedral. The donations will be distributed through a network of FoodBanks run by churches and Christian charities, to people struck by poverty and unable to feed themselves this Christmas. “The Christmas turkey and all those mince pies are a powerful reminder that food is not just sustenance or comfort; it is the great symbol of our commitment to each other,” explains Dean of Bristol, David Hoyle. “When you go short of food you are not just hungry, you are an outsider, because food is for sharing and food is company. This Christmas we need to invite others to eat and share that privilege.” Bishop Mike Hill, who is with David and many from the FoodBank network in Bristol to launch the collection point on Monday 2 December, adds, “Bristol Cathedral has opened its doors to the public so we can all support those in need. In Bristol and our diocese this Christmas, hundreds of people will struggle to provide for their families the Christmas dinner we’ve all come to cherish. “It’s churches and Christian charities that run most FoodBanks in this counry. Because we believe Christmas starts with Christ, we also believe that Christmas starts when we feed the hungry.” Thousands of people pass the Cathedral on College Green everyday on their way to and from work.
