GM Holden Malibu Technical Information May/June 2013 TECHNICAL REPOrt We have come a long way in just a short time when and repair methods might take a little while for some in this it comes to keeping abreast of new vehicle design and industry to get their head around, just look at the different build technology. Understanding these advanced vehicle steels used for the body structure shown in the cut away assembly features and how this plays a big part in the way image in Fig. 1. As you would expect being a GM brand, the we repair these new vehicles is so important. New Zealand Malibu also has some repair methods very similar to the VE repairers are lucky that we have access to a lot of this Holden Commodore. information thanks to many of the NZ motor companies now Overall the new GM Holden Malibu has some good repair sharing vehicle body repair information with us as a new options, but because the body structure has such a wide model is released. A good example of this is the new GM range of different steels be sure to get the full repair method Holden Malibu; this vehicle has not been released to the NZ before replacing any structural or welded on panels. market when this edition of PanelTalk was delivered. Having this technical information early, enables us to preview and CAUTION; advise those in the industry on any new design features or The 2013/14 The GM Holden Malibu released in NZ is a cautions they should be aware of before a new model arrives new body structure; it has different repair options than the in their shop, and yes there are a few features and cautions earlier North American Malibu. Early model Malibu repair with the Malibu. Some of the new Malibu design features specifications do not apply to the NZ model. 52 March/April - 2013 - PanelTalk TECHNICAL Let’s look at the REPOrt GM Holden Malibu Welding - Sectioning weld joint methods at locations that cutting the rail and fitting these as rear extensions only are not OEM assembly joints are consistent with other GM rather than installing the full rail. Another good option for Holden specifications, these use the Overlap Plug Weld the Malibu is the boot floor; this comes as a convenient Joint method, (check the January / Feburary 2013 edition of ready to fit welded on part that is cut to the correct length PanelTalk where we overviewed this weld joint method and from the floor-pan. showed how it should be done). Unlike the earlier model, the new model Malibu does Perhaps one repair method that is a little different on the not have a repair specification for fitting the full front rail; new Malibu is replacing the roof panel. The OEM roof panel is it has a partial replacement method only. A big bonus of attached with spot welds on the screen opening flanges and this partial replacement repair method is that the front rail is Mig bronze welded on the side rails, the repair method for section is available as a part and doesn’t require cutting replacing the roof is using structural adhesive in place of Mig from the full rail. The joint location is well back on the rail brazing for the side rails and Mig plug welds for the screen close to the dash panel (bulkhead/ firewall). This partial opening flanges. These specifications also come with some replacement has an inner and outer panel sectioning option good tips on how to position the roof panel correctly once and is far enough rearward on the rail that the need for full the glue has been applied. replacement would be limited. The rear rails have a partial replacement option that allows See Fig. 2 March/April - 2013 - PanelTalk 53 TECHNICAL REPOrt There are two sectioning options for the A pillar outer panel, full panel or the lower section only shown in Fig. 3. These options for the A Pillar panel are becoming more common these days and makes for a good alternative if there is only damage to the lower portion of the panel. The Malibu also has the option for fitting the A pillar einforcementr and inner panel however this is a little more involved so make sure you get the full procedure. The sill (rocker) and B pillar outer panels plus the inner reinforcements are almost a reproduction of the VE Commodore method but the Malibu does have different measurements so these should be followed. The full outer sill panel can be fitted (see Fig. 4) but remember the other joint locations for the A and B Pillar or rear quarter can also be considered. 54 March/April - 2013 - PanelTalk TECHNICAL Let’s look at the REPOrt GM Holden Malibu The rear quarter outer panel has the full replacement option, however remember the sill cut joint on the dog-leg could be another option if required. Looking at the upper cut joint on the pillar, this is getting real close to the roof panel so this might make a difference for refinishing, (something to consider when estimating) Fig. 5 shows the cut locations. Looking at the B Pillar outer panel replacement; this is another standard GM repair method for models that have ultra high strength steel (UHSS) reinforcements, this requires cutting into the cant rail to allow assess for fitting the full reinforcement. There is also a method for fitting the B Pillar reinforcements. Fig. 6 shows the B pillar outer panel removed. March/April - 2013 - PanelTalk 55.

Updated crashworthiness ratings and aggressivity ratings for 1982- 2004 model vehicles were estimated based on data on crashes in Victoria and New South Wales during 1987-2004 and in Queensland, Western Australia and New Zealand during 1991-2004. Both crashworthiness and aggressivity were measured by a combination of injury severity (the risk of death or serious injury given an injury was sustained) and injury risk (the risk of injury given crash involvement).

  • MY10 VE and WM PRODUCT INFORMATION 3.0L and 3.6L SIDI
September 2009 MY10 VE and WM PRODUCT INFORMATION 3.0L and 3.6L SIDI V6 Engines Overview The Global V6 engine family was launched by General Motors in 2003 to fulfil its strategy to build a new generation of engines for flexible worldwide application in premium and high- performance vehicles. Today GM Powertrain’s all-alloy 60-degree double overhead cam (DOHC) Global V6 engines power a variety of vehicles around the world. GM Holden is a producer as well as a user of Global V6 engines. In 2003 its newly commissioned $400 million Port Melbourne V6 engine plant began building Global V6 engines for export. In August 2004 Alloytec Global V6 engines were introduced to the Australian market with the Holden VZ Commodore and WL Caprice and Statesman model ranges. The latest evolution of the Global V6 is the Spark Ignition Direct Injection SIDI V6; which offers advanced direct combustion chamber fuel injection. Like its predecessor, the SIDI V6 applies highly developed engine technologies such as state-of- the-art casting processes, full four-cam phasing, ultra-fast data processing and torque-based engine management. GM Holden engineers jointly assisted in the architectural development of the SIDI V6 with colleagues from GM technical centres in North America and Germany. The 3.0L and 3.6L SIDI V6 engines introduced with the MY10 Holden Commodore, Berlina, Calais, Sportwagon, Ute, Statesman and Caprice model ranges combine with smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission and dual exhaust specified as standard*. They deliver a balance of improved operating refinement with first-rate noise and vibration control, good specific output, high torque over a broad rpm band, fuel economy and low emissions, exclusive durability-enhancing features and very low maintenance.
