ABSTRACT Sixty specimens of Scinax fuscovarius (Lutz, 1925) were collected between May 2009 and October 2011 at Campo Belo do Sul, State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and necropsied in search of helminth parasites. Only four helminth species were found: Pseudoacanthocephalus sp. Petrochenko, 1958, Cosmocerca brasiliense Travassos, 1925, C. parva Travassos, 1925 and Physaloptera sp. Rudolphi, 1819 (larvae). The genus of the female cosmocercids could not be determined. Only 30% of the anurans were parasitized. Scinax fuscovarius presented low prevalence, infection intensity, and parasite richness. Sex and size of S. fuscovarius individuals did not influence the prevalence, abundance, and species richness of helminth parasites. -

CEP 29075-910. Abstract: We conducted a long-term amphibian survey at the biodiversity corridor Pedra Azul-Forno Grande, in the mountain region of the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Sampling was conducted from April 2004 to October 2009 and we registered 43 species. Two species (Dendropsophus ruschii and Megaelosia apuana) are included in the state list of threatened species and Scinax belloni is included in the IUCN/GAA list. We provide color photographs for most species found in the region. -

Every year many parts of the biome change from terrestrial into aquatic habitats and vice-versa. The degree of inundation creates a range of major habi- tats. Flooding occupies about 80% of the whole Pantanal. In contrast, during the dry season, most of the flooded areas stay dry, when the water returns to the river beds or evaporates. The Pantanal is a large continental savanna wetland (147,574 km2 in Brazil), touching Bolivia to the north and Paraguay to the south. The maze of fluctuating water levels, nutrients, and biota forms a dynamic ecosystem. The vegetation comprises 1,863 phanerogam plant species listed for the floodplain and 3,400 for the whole basin and 250 species of aquatic plants. The complex vegetation cover and sea- sonal productivity support a diverse and abundant fauna within the floodplain: 263 species of fish, 41 of amphibians, 113 of reptiles (177 for the basin), 463 of birds and 132 mammal species. The new species is characterized by its small size (snout–vent length of males, 15.9–18.6 mm; females, 18.1–18.7 mm), very slender body, a snout that is strongly acute in lateral view and subelliptical in dorsal view, two lateral broad blackish stripes from the posterior corner of the eye to inguinal region, reduced toe webbing, and advertisement calls that are a single pulsed note with a pulse period of 2–13 ms and a dominant frequency of 2.51–5.95 kHz. The objective of this work were to analyze the effect of predation by Odonata naiads on two amphibian species with distinct habits – benthic and mid-water – and to verify whether the presence and architecture of macrophytes can mediate this interaction. All tadpoles and Odonata larvae were captured in a temporary pond. Sixteen tanks were used for three different treatments: Pistia, Salvinia and no macrophytes. Ten tadpoles of each species and two Odonata larvae were placed in each tank. The survival of tadpoles according to treatments was assessed through analysis of repeated measures. -

Crocodilians Glossary Bibliography Biographical Sketches Summary The Cerrado biome (savannah ecoregion) occupies 25% of the Brazilian territory (2.000.000 km2) and presents a mosaic of the phytophysiognomies, which is often reflected in its biodiversity. Despite its great distribution, the biological diversity of the biome still much unknown. Herein, we present a revision about the herpetofauna of this threatened biome. It is possible that the majority of the living families of amphibians and reptiles UNESCOof the savanna ecoregion originated – inEOLSS Gondwana, and had already diverged at the end of Mesozoic Era, with the Tertiary Period being responsible for the great diversification. Nowadays, the Cerrado harbors 152 amphibian species (44 endemic) and is only behind Atlantic Forest, which has 335 species and Amazon, with 232 species. Other SouthSAMPLE American open biomes , CHAPTERSlike Pantanal and Caatinga, have around 49 and 51 species, respectively. Among the 36 species distributed among eight families in Brazil, 10 species (4 families) are found in the Cerrado. Regarding the crocodilians, the six species found in Brazil belongs to Alligatoridae family, and also can be found in the Cerrado. -

The new taxon was found in the Amazonian rainforest of northern Brazil, municipalities of Maués and Careiro da Várzea, state of Amazonas. The new species is characterized by its moderate size (male mean snout-vent length 36.3 mm); body robust; large, orange, black-bordered axillary and inguinal spots; and bilobate vocal sac. This new species was found in primary and secondary forest on branches of shrubs or trees in, or next to, permanent ponds and flooded areas. Taxonomic Revision of the Scinax Alter Species Complex (Anura: Hylidae)
Copeia 2012, No. 3, 554–569 Taxonomic Revision of the Scinax alter Species Complex (Anura: Hylidae) Ivan Nunes1, Axel Kwet2, and Jose´ P. Pombal, Jr.1 Scinax alter, a taxon belonging to the S. ruber clade, has been previously suggested to represent a species complex. We analyzed variation among populations of Scinax alter using advertisement calls, dorsal color pattern, and external morphology. We identified three diagnosable groups distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil, which differ mainly in the advertisement call, dorsal drawing pattern, snout–vent length, and presence of tubercles on tarsus. Scinax alter was restricted to populations from south of Bahia State to Rio de Janeiro State, and two new species were related to the southern populations: Scinax imbegue, from Parque das Nascentes, Municipality of Blumenau (276039S, 496059W, 412 m a.s.l.), Santa Catarina State, Brazil, and Scinax tymbamirim, from Co´ rrego Grande (276359S, 486319W, at sea level), Municipality of Floriano´ polis, Santa Catarina State, Brazil.
