Character Description Munkestrap Male. Narrator. Lead Tom Cat, 2nd in command to Deuteronomy. Explains to young cats who haven’t been to ball before and looks after everyone. Dance not essential but must move cat like Skimbleshanks Male Railway Cat. Energetic, Bright , enthusiastic. Prefer good mover But not essential Asparagus/ Gus Male. Old theatre Cat , hand palsy, douBles into Growl Tiger sequence. So needs to act old and then change, so demands good acting within the song. Rum Tum Tugger Male. Flashy Tom Cat. Cool, pop / rock dancer. Hips/pelvis important! Is meant to be Munkestrap’s younger brother Deuteronomy Male Head of triBe. Old , dignified and wise. All the cats are very fond of him and he loves them. Slow moving. Face important at showing emotion to everyone especially Grizabella. No dance but strong vocals Mr Mistopholes Male magician. ?child prodigy learning to use his magical powers. Can be a non singer. Dancer or mover. Sings under name of Quaxo in score but this could be a diff male or female Bustopher Jones Older, Big cat. Posh – lunches at the cluB Can be younger person padded out. Could be female if they can sing in male voice. Needs to act out his numBer Often doubled up Mungojerry & Double Act. Song and dance duet Rumpleteezer Naughty mischievous pair of young cats. Bright vivacious jolly, Bossy . ? costume may Be just for the number don’t know yet Moves well. Prefer tap dancer But doesn’t have to Bombalurina & Females. Friends Hot, sexy, confident and in their prime. & Demeter Confident Singers and ideally movers . Sock it to ‘em voice. Jellylorum Female. Close to Gus. Often portrayed as a bit older but doesn’t have to be. Singing needs to tell a story and she is very fond of Gus which needs to come across In score sings a ‘C’ but not needed, anyone can do it. Jemima Female, sings part of Memory. Is a younger cat who sympathises with GrizaBella. Lovely voice .

After the group describes how they assign names to each cat in the tribe, they assemble in preparation to take part in the annual festival of cat-dom...they send out invitations to attend the Jellicle Ball! At the Ball, each cat tries to prove to Old Deuteronomy (the leader of the Jellicle tribe) why he or she deserves to go the Heavyside Layer – a heavenly feline afterlife. Munkustrap, the show’s feline narrator, introduces the cats one by one starting with Jennyanydots. The Rum Tum Tugger, the wild and inconstant Elvis-esque cat, interrupts her presentation with his grand entrance; he feels no obligation to other cats and does as he feels. Following Tugger’s exuberant performance, the old and greying Grizabella makes her way through the group causing the tribe to scatter. The other cats dislike the lowly Grizabella and somberly sing of her sad state. As Grizabella sulks off into the night, the fat and renowned Bustopher Jones sings of his elite status among his fellow cats.

Christopher had surgery Wednesday morning to remove/resection the remainder of a brain tumor. I thank the Lord to be able to report that the surgery was successful; both shunts have been removed and the majority of, if not all, of the tumor has been successfully removed. Please continue to pray for Christopher during his continued journey of healing and recovery. All are invited to join our St. Benilde community as we offer a Holy Hour for Christopher and his family this Monday, January 9th, from 6-7 PM in the Church. The Holy Hour will follow immediately after 5:30PM Mass. Please consider joining us as we thank God for prayers answered, implore the Lord to continue to pour out his healing Spirit upon Christopher, and ask the Lord to strengthen his parents and family members as they walk this path with Christopher. WHO’S WHO IN THE JELLICLE WORLD? Depending on the production there are as many as 30 different cats, some double up on characters but most stay the same. The Characters Asparagus a.k.a. Gus: The Theatre Cat – An elderly cat whose paws tremble from old age; he spends his time reminiscing about his past exploits when he used to be a famous theatre actor. Sings – “Gus The Theatre Cat” This Cat will also sing in the ‘CATS CHORUS’ Bustopher Jones – A fat upper-class cat who is respected by all. He is described as "the Brummell of cats" due to his immaculate pelt, which resembles a tuxedo and spats. In most productions, the actor playing Gus also plays Bustopher, but not necessarily. Sings - “Bustopher Jones - Cat About Town” This Cat will also sing in the ‘CATS CHORUS Bombalurina – A flirty and confident red queen; she is best friends with Demeter and the two share an intense hatred for Macavity. CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS Asparagus (Gus the Theatre Cat) Gus the Theatre Cat looks a little frail these days, sitting at the theatre doors, thinking about his heyday. His paws now shake from old age yet in his youth he was quite famous. He has played every possible part, one of his favourite being the infamous Growltiger. The Jellicle cats gather around to hear the story of Growltiger’s last stand. SKILLS • Acting (character part) • Singing (can be speech sung) Featured in “Gus the Theatre Cat” Bombalurina / Demeter Sensually lying across the stage and moving with elegance these two beautiful Jellicle Queens are best friends and are rarely seen apart. Their remarkable friendship contains some contrasting traits and they use this to their advantage. Bombalurina is the more self-possessed, flirtatious cat of the two. Although she’s confident, kind and touching, she can also be harsh. This personality is shown when she is angry towards Grizabella, although she eventually grows to respect and welcome her. Ladylike and mature, Demeter seems uninterested by Rum Tum Tugger but is extremely paranoid of Macavity and his whereabouts. Beneath her dignified shell, she is a tortured soul and always looks to her best friend for help in uncomfortable situations. These two young adults both share a stirring hatred towards Macavity and his sly, evil personality, shown through their duet ‘Macavity: The Mystery Cat’ and this ultimately creates an even stronger bond between them. SKILLS • Flirting • Dancing • Singing (Strong belt) Featured throughout including “Old Gumbie Cat” and “Macavity” Bustopher Jones Strutting his way round in his fastidious black coat and white spats, this distinguished cat is older and wiser than most of his fellow cats and has gained a respectful reputation amongst the Jellicle Tribe.
