Poppy Tierney - Biography A beguiling beauty with a sultry voice, Poppy is well known to theatre goers in lead roles such as Tess and Cosette. Having just finished Mary Poppins in London, she is currently starring as Eliza in a landmark production of My Fair Lady in Denmark. She is also working on her self-penned debut album, “Unlock Me” and just released a digital single as a taster. Her musical style is an amalgam of Lisa Stansfield, Shakira and Alanis Morissette and her favourite band is the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Poppy has had an incredible career in show business from starring in London's West End to major blockbuster movies and the international concert platform. She also starred in major commercials. Most notably she was the Special K girl in the UK and the FIAT girl in Italy. Born in the East End of London where she still lives, Poppy trained at Italia Conti (London) and TVI studios, Los Angeles. She is a trained actress, singer and dancer. TV and STAGE Summary. On film she can be seen as Margarita in "Batman Begins" (Warner Brothers). On television she had played parts in "The Bill", "Agony" and "Hooked on Books". 46 Simon Sladen Victoria and Albert Museum, UK “That Sort of Fairy Tale’s No Use in the New Victorian Age That’s Coming”: The Past as a Metaphor for the Present in Peter Nichols’s Poppy In 1982 the Royal Shakespeare Company premiered Peter Nichols’s Poppy at London’s Barbican Theatre. Using the past as a metaphor for the present, Poppy’s historical depiction of the nineteenth century Opium Wars in China resonated strongly with the then Conservative government’s economic policies and negotiations over Hong Kong’s future. Poppy draws comparisons between the ‘reigns’ of Queen Victoria and Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and confronts audiences with Britain’s colonial past. By way of theatrical juxtapositioning, the production criticises the present by evoking the past, wherein Nichols also uses contemporary references to 1980s politics and society to strengthen the metaphor. This article examines Nichols’s use of British pantomime conventions to expose Britain’s colonial history and considers the impact of history and Thatcher’s three terms in government on the Half Moon Theatre’s 1988 revival. The author argues that Poppy can be read as an outcry against, not only a celebration of Britain’s colonial past, but also Thatcherism. Simon Sladen is Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Performance at the Victoria and Albert Museum and is recognised as one of the UK’s leading experts on British Pantomime. After the group describes how they assign names to each cat in the tribe, they assemble in preparation to take part in the annual festival of cat-dom...they send out invitations to attend the Jellicle Ball! At the Ball, each cat tries to prove to Old Deuteronomy (the leader of the Jellicle tribe) why he or she deserves to go the Heavyside Layer – a heavenly feline afterlife. Munkustrap, the show’s feline narrator, introduces the cats one by one starting with Jennyanydots. The Rum Tum Tugger, the wild and inconstant Elvis-esque cat, interrupts her presentation with his grand entrance; he feels no obligation to other cats and does as he feels. Following Tugger’s exuberant performance, the old and greying Grizabella makes her way through the group causing the tribe to scatter. The other cats dislike the lowly Grizabella and somberly sing of her sad state. As Grizabella sulks off into the night, the fat and renowned Bustopher Jones sings of his elite status among his fellow cats.

Christopher had surgery Wednesday morning to remove/resection the remainder of a brain tumor. I thank the Lord to be able to report that the surgery was successful; both shunts have been removed and the majority of, if not all, of the tumor has been successfully removed. Please continue to pray for Christopher during his continued journey of healing and recovery. All are invited to join our St. Benilde community as we offer a Holy Hour for Christopher and his family this Monday, January 9th, from 6-7 PM in the Church. The Holy Hour will follow immediately after 5:30PM Mass. WHO’S WHO IN THE JELLICLE WORLD? Depending on the production there are as many as 30 different cats, some double up on characters but most stay the same. The Characters Asparagus a.k.a. Gus: The Theatre Cat – An elderly cat whose paws tremble from old age; he spends his time reminiscing about his past exploits when he used to be a famous theatre actor. Sings – “Gus The Theatre Cat” This Cat will also sing in the ‘CATS CHORUS’ Bustopher Jones – A fat upper-class cat who is respected by all. He is described as "the Brummell of cats" due to his immaculate pelt, which resembles a tuxedo and spats. In most productions, the actor playing Gus also plays Bustopher, but not necessarily. Sings - “Bustopher Jones - Cat About Town” This Cat will also sing in the ‘CATS CHORUS Bombalurina – A flirty and confident red queen; she is best friends with Demeter and the two share an intense hatred for Macavity. Sings - "The Old Gumbie Cat" "The Rum Tum Tugger" "Grizabella: The Glamour Cat“ “Macavity” This role is a dancing cat. Demeter – A troubled and skittish queen; she is best friends with Bombalurina and the two share an intense hatred for Macavity.
