Audition Preparation - Singing • Prepare two song excerpts from Musical Theatre in the style of the show - specifically in the style of the songs sung by the character/s for which you are auditioning. • One song must be a song by Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Songs from the show are acceptable as one of your excerpts only. • You should prepare about 32 bars of each song (approximately 1 minute per song is a good guide). The Panel may not hear both songs at the audition. With this in mind, please make appropriate cuts to your songs before your audition and choose appropriate excerpts with which to demonstrate your abilities. • As you will not be reading at your audition, please make sure you choose songs which allow you to show your characterisation of the role/s for which you are auditioning. • Please bring backing tracks for your audition on a device that can be plugged into a speaker (no CDs or USB sticks please) OR sheet music (with clearly marked cuts) for the audition pianist. A speaker and auxiliary cable will be available. • No a cappella auditions please. • Sheet music is available online at http://www.musicnotes.com or other sites for a small charge and easily can be printed via these websites. Audition Preparation – Acting • You will need to show your acting abilities in your song, so please choose wisely. Audition Preparation – Dance and Movement • Wear something suitable for moving and dancing, that fits well and moves with your body e.g. dance attire or fitness/activewear. Please do not wear skirts, dresses, baggy oversize t- shirts, etc. • Bring or wear suitable shoes. If you think you don’t have anything suitable, please do not purchase anything! Just wear runners or socks. Please do not wear thongs, sandals, flimsy type shoes that will slip off your feet! • Dancers please bring jazz shoes, ballet flats, and tap shoes. Once again there is no need to purchase anything, just bring what you have! • Group 1 audition will consist of learning one or two short sections of simple dance choreography. • Group 2 audition will consist of ‘from the corner’ style exercises to show us what you can do with turns, kicks, jumps etc. There will also be one or two short choreography routines to learn, which will then be performed in small groups. There will also be an opportunity for you to show us any acrobatic/tumbling skills that you are safely capable of doing e.g. cartwheels, walkovers, flicks, etc. • Group 2 please arrive well warmed up and ready to dance or arrive early to warmup beforehand. Rehearsals • Rehearsals commence on Wednesday, 26 June at 7.00 p.m. • Rehearsals are held on Monday (Principals only), Wednesday evenings – 7:00pm – 10:00pm and Sunday afternoons from 1.00 p.m. – 5 p.m. (Company) Specialist dancers and/or Principals may be called from 11.00 a.m. on Sundays. • Additional Rehearsals can be called by mutual agreement amongst cast members. • It is the expectation of both the Creative Team and Queensland Musical Theatre that everyone involved in this production will be available from the date of their casting through until 3 November, as required by the schedule. • To ensure that Cats is a production of the highest quality, and in fairness to all involved, it is essential that all cast members are available for all scheduled rehearsals. Everyone’s time is valuable, and it is vital that important rehearsal time is not wasted by the absence of required cast members. • All known absences at the time of the auditions must be recorded on the audition form. • Missing rehearsals without notice may result in cast members forfeiting their place in a routine or even in the cast. Full Day Rehearsals • Compulsory Full Day Rehearsals will be held on Saturday, 14 and Sunday, 15 September Sitzprobe • Compulsory Sitzprobe is scheduled for Sunday, 15 September commencing at 9.00 a.m. Bump-in/Theatre Rehearsals • Cast will be expected to be involved in Bump-in and the theatre rehearsals leading up to performances. Membership/Production Fee • Those selected to be in the cast of Cats will be required to become financial members of Queensland Musical Theatre. • All Cats cast members are required to pay a Production Fee. • Failure to pay these fees by the 3rd rehearsal may result in your invitation to perform being withdrawn. Publicity • Those selected in the cast of Cats will be expected to distribute posters and postcards to their local areas; post, like and share about the show on social media and generally assist the Company to sell the show to South East Queensland audiences. General Information • The show calls for a cast that is prepared to have fun, work hard and above all show commitment. Further information: [email protected] QMT – Cats Major Character Breakdown Munkustrap 3 words – Charismatic, Energetic, Courageous Narrator of show. The leader of the cats in Deuteronomy’s absence. He likes to be in charge and is the one frequently telling the stories or directing the other cats. Commanding presence. Brother to Rum Tum Tugger. Vocal Range: B2-G4 Rum Tum Tugger 3 words – Curious, Seductive, Clownish Rum Tum Tugger is a show off, often trying to attract attention when it is not focused on him, and revelling in it when it is. Very flirty and will happily lead those on around him. We all know someone just like him. Many of the kittens and Queens are fans of his charisma. Brother to Munkustrap. Vocal Range: B2-F#4 Old Deuteronomy 3 words – Caring, Mature, Commanding Old Deuteronomy is considered to be a kind and just leader to the Jellicle Tribe. While he is 'old and tottery' and 'must go slow', he is fairly lively and moves along with a variety of songs performed for him. Vocal Range: G2-F#4 Grizabella 3 words – Timid, Hurt, Indomitable The glamour cat who left the tribe to experience the outside world and who now wants to come back. Grizabella's personality is characterized by regret, rejection, and loneliness. She is portrayed as an older cat, although she may not be as old as her appearance implies. Grizabella usually moves slowly and carefully. Vocal Range: G3-E4 Mr Mistoffelees 3 words – Electric, Friendly, Charismatic Mistoffelees is a rather mysterious, clever and cunning conjuring cat, often found being mischievous or performing amusing antics. He is the tribe magician and always knows how to entertain. Vocal Range: no solo singing Victoria (The White Cat) 3 words – Inquisitive, Elegant, Innocent Victoria is one of the youngest cats. She is one of the kinder and more open cats and is an amazing dancer. Although her movements are graceful, elegant, and timid, she is not shy around the likes of the Rum Tum Tugger. The Jellicle Ball begins with her solo dance and she performs a pas de deux with Plato. Vocal Range: no solo singing Asparagus 3 words – Dramatic, Mature, Fatherly The theatre cat. The old cat was famous in his youth as he was a cat of the stage. However, he is now very old and soon will be gone but he tells the rest of the tribe of his youth and his roles on stage. He is usually slightly absent-minded, a bit grumpy and he prefers to doze in a corner than be too involved in the goings-on around him. Vocal Range: B2-G#3 Skimbleshanks 3 words – Protective, Bright, Self-regarding Skimbleshanks is an energetic ginger tabby known as "the Railway Cat". He is one of the adults of the tribe, always protecting the kittens whenever danger is near. Despite this, he is a jolly and cheerful cat, often seen dancing and being silly with the younger toms. He is a very animated character and has a Scottish accent. Vocal range: C#3-F4 Bombalurina 3 words – Seductive, Friendly, Confident She’s a red female who loves to flirt with all the toms but really has her heart set on the Rum Tum Tugger. She plays a leading part in introducing several of the cats and has a slightly protective side shown toward the kittens and her best friend, Demeter.

The Old Gumbie Cat T. S. Eliot I have a Gumbie Cat in mind, her name is Jennyanydots; Her coat is of the tabby kind, with tiger stripes and leopard spots. All day she sits upon the stair or on the steps or on the mat; She sits and sits and sits and sits--and that's what makes a Gumbie Cat! But when the day's hustle and bustle is done, Then the Gumbie Cat's work is but hardly begun. And when all the family's in bed and asleep, She tucks up her skirts to the basement to creep. She is deeply concerned with the ways of the mice Their behaviour's not good and their manners not nice; So when she has got them lined up on the matting, She teaches them music, crocheting and tatting. I have a Gumbie Cat in mind, her name is Jennyanydots; Her equal would be hard to find, she likes the warm and sunny spots. All day she sits beside the hearth or on the bed or on my hat: She sits and sits and sits and sits--and that's what makes a Gumbie Cat! But when the day's hustle and bustle is done, Then the Gumbie Cat's work is but hardly begun. As she finds that the mice will not ever keep quiet, She is sure it is due to irregular diet; And believing that nothing is done without trying, She sets right to work with her baking and frying. She makes them a mouse--cake of bread and dried peas, And a beautiful fry of lean bacon and cheese.

  • Musical Films - an Introduction
SESSION 1 – Musical films - An introduction. STUDENT B - COMPOSITION A musical often opens with a song that shows the tone of the film, introduces some or all the main characters, and shows the set of the film. A musical can be built around 4-6 songs, called tunes, that appear regularly in the film (Porgy and Bess), or consist of a series of songs not musically related (Chicago). Porgy and Bess scene. Musicals dedicate more time to music than to dialogue. Music, and not dialogues, provides emotions. Spoken dialogues are generally introduced between musical numbers, although the use of "sung dialogues" (recitative) is also possible, especially in musicals where there aren’t any spoken dialogues (Les Misérables and Evita). The material for musicals is often original, but many musicals are adapted from novels (Man of La Mancha), plays (Hello, Dolly!), classic legends (Camelot!), historical events (Evita) or films (Hairspray). On the other hand, many familiar musical plays are the basis for musical films (West Side Story). India produces numerous musical films, known as Bollywood musicals, and Japan produces Anime-style musicals. Another recent genre of musicals, called jukebox musicals, uses songs composed by a popular artist or group to form a story – sometimes based on the life of the person/group (Mamma Mia!, using ABBA songs). Camelot. Evita. A Bollywood musical. An Anime musical. SESSION 2 – Porgy and Bess. STUDENT B – PORGY AND BESS CHARACTERISTICS Porgy and Bess tells the story of Porgy, a disabled black man who lived in Catfish Row, a mansion in the black suburbs of Charleston (South Carolina) in the early 1920s.

After the group describes how they assign names to each cat in the tribe, they assemble in preparation to take part in the annual festival of cat-dom...they send out invitations to attend the Jellicle Ball! At the Ball, each cat tries to prove to Old Deuteronomy (the leader of the Jellicle tribe) why he or she deserves to go the Heavyside Layer – a heavenly feline afterlife. Munkustrap, the show’s feline narrator, introduces the cats one by one starting with Jennyanydots. The Rum Tum Tugger, the wild and inconstant Elvis-esque cat, interrupts her presentation with his grand entrance; he feels no obligation to other cats and does as he feels. Following Tugger’s exuberant performance, the old and greying Grizabella makes her way through the group causing the tribe to scatter. The other cats dislike the lowly Grizabella and somberly sing of her sad state. As Grizabella sulks off into the night, the fat and renowned Bustopher Jones sings of his elite status among his fellow cats.
