  • Musical Films - an Introduction
SESSION 1 – Musical films - An introduction. STUDENT B - COMPOSITION A musical often opens with a song that shows the tone of the film, introduces some or all the main characters, and shows the set of the film. A musical can be built around 4-6 songs, called tunes, that appear regularly in the film (Porgy and Bess), or consist of a series of songs not musically related (Chicago). Porgy and Bess scene. Musicals dedicate more time to music than to dialogue. Music, and not dialogues, provides emotions. Spoken dialogues are generally introduced between musical numbers, although the use of "sung dialogues" (recitative) is also possible, especially in musicals where there aren’t any spoken dialogues (Les Misérables and Evita). The material for musicals is often original, but many musicals are adapted from novels (Man of La Mancha), plays (Hello, Dolly!), classic legends (Camelot!), historical events (Evita) or films (Hairspray). On the other hand, many familiar musical plays are the basis for musical films (West Side Story). India produces numerous musical films, known as Bollywood musicals, and Japan produces Anime-style musicals. Another recent genre of musicals, called jukebox musicals, uses songs composed by a popular artist or group to form a story – sometimes based on the life of the person/group (Mamma Mia!, using ABBA songs). Camelot. Evita. A Bollywood musical. An Anime musical. SESSION 2 – Porgy and Bess. STUDENT B – PORGY AND BESS CHARACTERISTICS Porgy and Bess tells the story of Porgy, a disabled black man who lived in Catfish Row, a mansion in the black suburbs of Charleston (South Carolina) in the early 1920s.

After the group describes how they assign names to each cat in the tribe, they assemble in preparation to take part in the annual festival of cat-dom...they send out invitations to attend the Jellicle Ball! At the Ball, each cat tries to prove to Old Deuteronomy (the leader of the Jellicle tribe) why he or she deserves to go the Heavyside Layer – a heavenly feline afterlife. Munkustrap, the show’s feline narrator, introduces the cats one by one starting with Jennyanydots. The Rum Tum Tugger, the wild and inconstant Elvis-esque cat, interrupts her presentation with his grand entrance; he feels no obligation to other cats and does as he feels. Following Tugger’s exuberant performance, the old and greying Grizabella makes her way through the group causing the tribe to scatter. The other cats dislike the lowly Grizabella and somberly sing of her sad state. As Grizabella sulks off into the night, the fat and renowned Bustopher Jones sings of his elite status among his fellow cats.

  • Character Descriptions
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS Asparagus (Gus the Theatre Cat) Gus the Theatre Cat looks a little frail these days, sitting at the theatre doors, thinking about his heyday. His paws now shake from old age yet in his youth he was quite famous. He has played every possible part, one of his favourite being the infamous Growltiger. The Jellicle cats gather around to hear the story of Growltiger’s last stand. SKILLS • Acting (character part) • Singing (can be speech sung) Featured in “Gus the Theatre Cat” Bombalurina / Demeter Sensually lying across the stage and moving with elegance these two beautiful Jellicle Queens are best friends and are rarely seen apart. Their remarkable friendship contains some contrasting traits and they use this to their advantage. Bombalurina is the more self-possessed, flirtatious cat of the two. Although she’s confident, kind and touching, she can also be harsh. This personality is shown when she is angry towards Grizabella, although she eventually grows to respect and welcome her. Ladylike and mature, Demeter seems uninterested by Rum Tum Tugger but is extremely paranoid of Macavity and his whereabouts. Beneath her dignified shell, she is a tortured soul and always looks to her best friend for help in uncomfortable situations. These two young adults both share a stirring hatred towards Macavity and his sly, evil personality, shown through their duet ‘Macavity: The Mystery Cat’ and this ultimately creates an even stronger bond between them. SKILLS • Flirting • Dancing • Singing (Strong belt) Featured throughout including “Old Gumbie Cat” and “Macavity” Bustopher Jones Strutting his way round in his fastidious black coat and white spats, this distinguished cat is older and wiser than most of his fellow cats and has gained a respectful reputation amongst the Jellicle Tribe.

Cats the Musical the Movie: Mixed Message Mediums and the Challenge of Adaptation Kaycee Genualdo ABSTRACT Elitism in film studies plays a significant role in dictating the parameters of legitimate study and maintaining the status quo and dictating; serious academic research and theoretical analyzation are often reserved for features considered historically significant—masterworks that reflect technological breakthroughs and revolutionary techniques of the craft. As such, the reluctance to stray from the accepted canon leads to the oversaturated and derivative nature of academic discourse.
