The Region of Central Macedonia is mainly a lowland area with many rivers. Central Macedonia is a unique land with a long and continuous human presence from Prehistoric times.  is the highest in Greece. It is located in the Olympus Range on the between Thessaly and Macedonia, between the regional units of Pieria and . Mount Olympus has 52 peaks, deep gorges, and exceptional biodiversity. The highest peak, Mytikas, rises to 2,918 metres and is one of the highest peaks in in terms of topographic prominence. The Voras are a mountain range situated on the border between Greece and FYROM. It separates the Pella regional unit on the Greek side in the south from the Mariovo region on the FYROM side in the north. The tallest peak in the range is Kaimakchalan at 2,524 m. Ancient sites include the Dion archaeological Park, the archaeological museum of (Royal Tombs of Aigai) and the ancient in Pella, the biggest agora of the ancient world. Agricultural Production

•The agricultural sector has always been one of the major production areas in the Region of Central Macedonia. •The primary sector of the region participates by 26% in gross value added of the primary sector at national level •Productions of the primary sector in which the Central Macedonia has a leading role in Greece are: Fruits (peaches, apples, kiwi, cherries, apricots, grapes, pears etc.), table , cotton, rice, grains, vegetables (tomato, lettuce, cucumber, zucchini, pepper etc.) fodder plants, beef cows' milk sheep and goat milk eggs and bird meat pork honey. •The Wine Roads of include eight routes which begin in the west. Five routes have been developed in the Region of Central Macedonia: the Wine Route of Pella- , the Wine Route of the Olympian Gods, the Wine Route of Naoussa, the Wine Route of Thessaloniki and the Wine Route of Halkidiki. •With more than 6,500 beekeepers and an annual production of 1910 tons of honey, accounts for 32% of the total production of honey in Greece.

•The University of Thessaloniki (A.U.TH.) is the sixth oldest and among the most highly ranked tertiary education institutions in Greece. It is named after the philosopher Aristotle. •The University was founded in 1925 and is the largest university in Greece and in the . It was the second Greek university to be founded after the University of , which was established in 1837. • The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki performs a great deal of research in a variety of scientific fields. It is in constant and close cooperation with universities, organizations and research centres both in Greece and abroad. The large number of its faculties and its approximately 250 laboratories enable scientists of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki to carry out a variety of research projects with great success. • The Technological Educational Institute of Central Macedonia was founded in 1983 and is located in the city of Serres. It consists of three schools: the School of Technological Applications, the School of Administration and and the School of Graphic Arts and Design. • The Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki is a higher education public institute, part of the Greek tertiary education system, specialized on applied sciences. Transport Infrastructure

The Region is served by one international airport and one international port in Thessaloniki, the national highway, the “Egnatia Road” that extends from Polimylos to Strimonas and the railway network that passes through the entire region.

Privatization of the Thessaloniki Port Authority (OLTH)

The German-French-Greek consortium gained the tender  €231.92 million for the consortium of Deutsche Invest Equity Partners (DIEP) with the subsidiary of ’s CMA CGM (Terminal Link) and the Savvidis Group (Belterra Investments Ltd) for a 67 % stake in OLTH The benefit to the Greek state from the deal will come to €1.1 billion as it will also include the consortium’s commitment to invest €180 million in the next 7years The expected revenues from the concession agreement amounting to 3.5 % of the annual OLTH turnover, set to add up to another € 170 million

The TAP΄s progress The construction of the (TAP) AG in Greece continues to progress on time, on track and on budget. Thanks to the efforts of the 3,100+ people working for the project, work is now underway in all three Northern Greek Prefectures to be traversed by the pipeline: Eastern Macedonia-Thrace, Central Macedonia and –most recently– Western Macedonia With regard to the €32 million socio-environmental investment (SEI) programme that TAP has voluntarily committed to implementing, 47 such investments initiatives have already been committed in all three Northern Greek Prefectures, their total value amounting to €1,150,000 The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) will cross five of the seven regions of Central Macedonia prefecture. The pipeline is 543 km long, and 224 km of this will pass through the Serres, Kilkis, Thessaloniki, Imathia and Pella regions

Over €730 million for the extension of the metro in Thessaloniki, in Central Macedonia The EU is financially supporting a modern, driverless metro system in the city of Thessaloniki to boost the local economy. Over €407 million will be invested in the completion of the city's Metro Main Line, including new tunnels, renovation work in metro stations and the supply of 24 trains. Once operational in 2020, the metro line expects 247,000 passengers daily, which will reduce the amount of traffic in the Thessaloniki area and improve air quality In addition, almost €323 million will put towards the extension of the metro to the city of , southeast of Thessaloniki. This will improve everyday life in the , especially for commuters between Kalamaria and Thessaloniki

The section of the Egnatia Motorway crossing Central Macedonia extends from Polymylos to and has a total length of 191 km. It is a four- lane motorway, with a cross section width of 24,5 m with two traffic lanes and a hard per direction and a central reserve separating the two directions At section Klidi- Thessaloniki- Derveni, which has a length of 45 km, it becomes a six-lane motorway with three lanes and a hard shoulder per direction. This section includes big bridges of a total (approximate) length of 7 km and tunnels of an (approximate) length of 18 km, as well as a great number of junctions and major structures The total cost of the completion of section Polymylos- Strymonas amounts to € 1.298 million

Kastania bypass was constructed in Central Macedonia and involves the section of the Egnatia Motorway from Polymylos to , which has a total length of 26 km. The construction of this section was one of the most difficult, from the technical viewpoint, as the axis crosses the mountain of Vermio, at the borderland between West and Central Macedonia, an area characterized by an intense terrain, a high elevation and difficult climate conditions The section includes twin-tube tunnels of a length 14 km(7 km per bore) and big bridges with high piers of a total length 2,8 km (1,4 km per bridge carriageway). The construction cost of Kastania bypass amounts to € 485 million

Τhe Airport of Thessaloniki, “Macedonia” International Airport is including in the cluster A of regional airports that HRADF concluded successfully international tender process in the granting of the right of concession for the development and operation of 14 regional airports in Greece. In particular, two 40-year concessions to upgrade, maintain, manage and operate two clusters of seven regional airports (per each) have been conferred to a consortium of companies consisting of AG Airport Services Worldwide and Slentel Limited of Copelouzos Group

 HRADF promotes the development of a landplot of c. 735,000 m2 in Sani area in Kassandra peninsula. The proposed development concept includes a 18-hole golf course of international standards, with additional training areas, a luxury hotel and vacation homes facilities. The development of the property should be harmoniously integrated in the environment and the existing ecosystem, highlighting the unique natural beauty of the surrounding area.

The marina of Thessaloniki (or marina of Aretsou) is located on the southern side of the coastal zone of the municipality of Kalamaria, in an area called “Mikro Emvolo”, only 7km away from the center of Thessaloniki. The marina offers today 242 berths for yachts up to 30 meters of length. The land area of the marina is 77.825m2.

 HRADF promotes the development of one seaside property in an area of unique natural beauty, in Chalkidiki peninsula, Possidi. It is a landplot of a total surface of c. 160,000 m2 in Kassandra peninsula with 370 m beachfront property. It is situated 105 km from Thessaloniki and 95 km from the “Macedonia” international airport. It is suitable for the development of vacation homes, high quality hotels, restaurants and recreation areas.

HRADF holds 74% of Thessaloniki Water Supply & Sewerage SA (EYATH) , 5% is held by Suez Environment Company and the remaining is free float. According to its Asset Development Plan, HRADF will appoint advisors for the evaluation of the optimal approach with respect to the exploitation of 23% of the company shares and the modification of its existing concession agreement with the Hellenic Republic

Central Macedonia is one of the richest in wine production regions of Greece, as the history of its wine starts from the depths of the centuries and reaches to this day.

Halkidiki has produced famous wines since antiquity, with testimonies dating back to the 5th century. B.C. Nowadays the vineyards are grown in central Chalkidiki, and . On the sunny slopes of Mount Meliton, the dry-warm climate and the beneficial humidity of the favor the production of fine wines from Limnio, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Asyrtiko, Roditi and Athiri.

In Mount Athos monasteries there is a long tradition in the art of viticulture and wine production and in their vineyards with the mild climate, the great sunshine, the mountain dew and the sea breeze, today a large range of grapes is grown: white Rhoditis, Athiri, Asyrtiko, Sauvignon Blanc and Red Limnio, , Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache Rouge.

The Wine Roads of the Central Macedonia are designed and supported by the `Wine Producers Association of the Macedonian Vineyard` Carras: One of the largest tourism investments in the Mediterranean

The Porto Carras Grand Resort has won 4 Tourism Awards 2017, namely 2 awards in the "Luxury Resort" and "Golf Resort" categories and 2 silver in the " Resort" and "Gastronomic and Wine Tourism" categories.

The property covers over 4000 acres, including more than six miles of sandy beach and twenty-five pristine coves. The resort includes two 5-star hotels, Meliton and Sithonia, as well as the bungalow style Villa Gallini. There is a casino and two Thalassotherapy and Spa Centers. Central Macedonian products are held in high esteem, both in the Greek and global market. Producers’ dedication and skill, together with the coordinated efforts of local and national institutions managing and promoting agricultural products, have helped to acquaint the public with these unique, primitive, local products.  Honey: With 6.500 honey workers (32% of total of country) and 1.910 tons of production of exceptional quality of honey annually, it is characterized as the centre of honey production in Greece  Virgin Oil- Olives: Chalkidiki produces oil and olives that excel in flavour and quality, with high nutritious value  Goat cheese – Feta cheese: The Goat Cheese is the traditional cheese of Chalkidiki, produced by unmixed Goats milk and has increased content in protein.  Ouzo- : Chalkidiki is famous for its ouzo and tsipouro production (a strong distilled spirit containing 40-45% alcohol by volume and is produced from the pomace (the residue of the wine press).  Fish: In a 10-acre marine area with a capacity of 3,470 tonnes per year, Mediterranean fish are reared in floating fish cages, 95% of which is exported

Central Macedonian wines are among the best in the world. In ancient Chalkidiki, famous wines were produced. Today, grapevines are cultivated in central Chalkidiki, in Sithonia and in Mt Athos. A detailed list of famous and distinguished wines from the Region of Central Macedonia is as follows:

By variety:  Roditis and Sauvignon , Xinomavro, Grenache Rouge and Cabernet, Sauvignon (Chalkidiki) Roditis, Athiri, Assyrtico, Sauvignon Blanc, Limnio, Xinomavro, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache Rouge (Mount Athos)  Limnio, an old Greek variety together with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc gave birth to the red V.Q.P.R.D. ‘Slopes of Mt Meliton'. Under the same Appellation of Origin a white wine is produced as well, from the successful blend of the varieties Assyrtico, Roditis and Athiri.
