Charlie Higson wrote the first 5 young bond novels and they are well written, exciting and true to Bond and a young Spy. Teen spy books Young Bond: Heads You Die not for everyone, but series like Alex Rider and Jason Steed capture, attract readers and are great teen agents and are all well written and exciting. I almost gave this 1 star, its not worthy of anything above 2, plot holes, historical errors and just plain boring. How could they allow this writer to get his hands on Ian Fleming would roll over in his grave. How could they allow this writer to get his hands on the name James Bond. I mean 'Bond' is an icon, allow the spy writers with proven records write a series for younger readers who will then go onto reading the original Fleming novels. Steve Cole has destroyed that. I don't recommend really for anyone. View 1 comment. Jul 23, Steve Fincher rated it it was ok. It was a struggle to finish and I am glad its over. View all 5 comments. Not sure it deserved 3 stars but I don't want to give a book less, it was a bit boring, no it WAS boring and never really got going. The bad guys put poison on English bank notes and were going to send it to England. Thats pretty much it and of course James stopped them and blew it up. But it took a whole book to get their and it was slow and boring. I won't read another of this series. May 05, Bill Lynas rated it did not like it. I wanted to like this novel, I really did. In fact there's plenty of action Young Bond: Heads You Die the story, but unfortunately the more that the novel progresses the duller it gets. I appreciate that it has been written for teenagers, but having read many YA novels over the years this is by far the weakest. OK, it's not the worst novel ever in my opinion that position is held by William Boyd's Solobut it sa I wanted to like this novel, I really Young Bond: Heads You Die. OK, it's not the worst novel ever in my opinion that position is held by William Boyd's Solobut it sadly Young Bond: Heads You Die excitement on every level. May 26, Andrew Farley rated it liked it Shelves: bond. Action packed, but has its ups and downs. James is still weary of using guns, but there was some key commentary on it in this book. James makes a point to declare that he will never shoot someone in cold blood, and a villain declares James will shoot people. This is very important because up to this point the only gun young Bond would consider is a pop-gun. As Young Bond: Heads You Die go through the books he is learning that sometimes it is a necessity, and seeing that growth is a lot of fun. So if he's not 3. So if he's not killing with a gun how does he win? Smarts, and a lot of them. However, along with that he gets a ton Young Bond: Heads You Die help from friends, which is a nice little message to young readers. Hugo is still seeing development, but the other friendly characters, Marista and Jagua, saw little growth. Sure, we learned a lot about Jagua's youth, but when it came to her feelings she seemed flat. This flatness made it difficult for me to invest too much in her character. Of course there was the Hugo-Jagua love story, but that seemed to go stagnant, and then was left in the end to a hug and "hey write Young Bond: Heads You Die a letter. Finally we got a plot with some world domination aspirations. Sadly the characters didn't inspire as much excitement as usual. I would still recommend this book to readers of the series and Bond fans in general. Dec 06, 17morrisj rated it liked it. This book has a decent storyline but is action packed, what i enjoyed the most about this book is the catchy chapter names, for example, Suicide club: now recruiting, they reflect on the context of the book well and there is a good level of vocabulary and description in this book, i recommend this book to people who love the bond franchise or films as they present the same excitement as reading the film. Nov 05, Carson rated it liked it. When I read a novel, I need it to stand out in the canon Some are really good at this - like Fleming's of courseRaymond Benson's, a couple of Gardner's and some of the Young Bond's. This one was good but not great - it played it safe, did not leave an impression on me I couldn't live without, and the characters and story were average. Young Bond: Heads You Die it loses me is there is ultimately no grave consequence nor is there a lesson for Bond that he cannot live without. May 11, Martyn Perry rated it liked it Shelves: my-book-collection. This is another Bond adventure which Young Bond: Heads You Die enjoyable enough, yet doesn't match the quality of the Higson adventures. Readable, packed with action, yet far too lightweight to be fully appreciable as an adult reader. Where Higson had the balance and appeal sorted equally for young and old, Cole unashamedly aims straight for the twelve year olds with not enough depth to satisfy fully. Jul 14, R. Mitchell rated it liked it. Not my favourite one of the series. A few entertaining parts but this time the pace was too slow and the characters weren't as entertaining as usual. Must try harder Bond! Heads You Die Archives | Young Bond With corrupt cops and hired assassins hot on his heels, James must travel through Havana and brave Caribbean waters to stop a countdown to mass murder. A towering man of mixed ancestry with long, panther-black hair, who Young Bond: Heads You Die taken his name from the breed of giant, deadly centipede he has discovered. His intricate knowledge of tropical flora and fauna makes him a poisonous individual in more ways than one. Scolopendra has risen from the gutters of Havana to become a rich, powerful and ruthless businessman no one sane would ever cross. He might have come late to the feast of the rich man, but it seemed that had only left him more determined to take all he desired. Strong, proud and rebellious, Jagua is the daughter of Scolopendra.

Northover Department : Theory of Literature This study explores the representations of masculinity in selected contemporary children’s adventure literature. According to John Stephens (2002:x), a problem for boys, both in narrative fictions and in the world, is that hegemonic masculinity ‘appears simultaneously to propose a schema for behaviour and to insist on their subordination as children, to conflate agency with hegemonic masculinity, and to disclose that, for them, such agency is illusory’.

  • Imperial Nostalgia: Victorian Values, History and Teenage Fiction in Britain
RONALD PAUL Imperial Nostalgia: Victorian Values, History and Teenage Fiction in Britain In his pamphlet, The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte, on the seizure of French government power in 1851 by Napoleon’s grandson, Louis, Karl Marx makes the following famous comment about the way in which political leaders often dress up their own ideological motives and actions in the guise of the past in order to give them greater historical legitimacy: The tradition of all the dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brain of the living. And just when they seem engaged in revolutionizing themselves and things, in creating something that has never yet existed, precisely in such periods of revolutionary crisis they anxiously conjure up the spirits of the past to their service and borrow from them names, bat- tle-cries, and costumes in order to present the new scene of world history in this time-honoured disguise and this borrowed language.1 One historically contentious term that has been recycled in recent years in the public debate in Britain is that of “Victorian values”. For most of the 20th century, the word “Victorian” was associated with negative connotations of hypercritical morality, brutal industrial exploitation and colonial oppression. However, it was Mrs Thatcher who first gave the word a more positive political spin in the 1980s with her unabashed celebration of Victorian laissez-faire capitalism and patriotic fervour. This piece of historical obfuscation was aimed at disguising the grim reality of her neoliberal policies of economic privatisation, anti-trade union legislation, cut backs in the so-called “Nanny” Welfare State and the gunboat diplomacy of the Falklands War.

Blood in the Water The boy crept up to the fence and looked around. There was the familiar sign . KEEP OUT! PRIVATE PROPERTY. TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT. And hanging next to it, just to make sure that the message was clearly understood, were the bodies of several dead animals. Strung up like criminals, wire twisted round their broken necks. He knew them so well; they were almost like old friends. There were rabbits with their eyes pecked out, tattered black crows with broken wings, a couple of foxes, a few rats, even a wildcat and a pine marten. In all the days he’d been coming here the boy had watched them slowly rotting away, until some of them were little more than flaps of dirty leather and yellow bones. But there were a couple of fresh ones since yesterday, a squirrel and another fox. Which meant that someone had been back. 1 Text copyright (c) Charlie Higson.
