Shoot to kill cover reveal | Young Bond Young Bond is a series of young adult spy novels featuring Ian Fleming 's secret agent James Bond as a young teenage boy attending school at Eton College in the s. The series, written by Charlie Higsonwas Young Bond: Shoot to Kill planned to include only five novels; however, after the release of the fifth novel, Higson considered the possibility of a second series. Since the release of the first novel, SilverFininthe series has become very successful [3] and has led to further works including games, a graphic novel and a supplemental travel guide. According to Charlie Higson, Ian Fleming Publications initially planned for him to only write one novel and that every subsequent novel would be written by a rotating author. This plan fell apart and Higson agreed to author future books in the series. However, comments made by Higson in an interview could suggest that after Higson's five books are completed, the series may be continued by another author. An extract from the story appeared in some later paperback editions of By Royal Command. It is the longest James Bond short story yet written. Cole's novels will follow Young Bond: Shoot to Kill from Higson's last Young Bond: Shoot to Kill, By Royal Command and the aftermath of Bond's expulsion from Eton. The first novel will be published in the UK by Random House in the autumn of A lifelong fan of the original Bond novels, Cole described the task as "a thrilling privilege and an exciting challenge". In an interview with the Bucks HeraldCole confirmed that Bond would be 14—15 years old in his novels and that the books would show how the adult Bond was formed. As part of the process for securing the position, Cole was tasked with creating a pitch for a story arc that would stretch across all four books. In October at Young Bond: Shoot to Kill Cheltenham Literature Festival in England, Cole revealed the cover art for his second novel in the series, titled Heads You Diewhich will be published by an imprint of Random House called Red Fox and the book will be released on 5 May In MayCole's third book in the series is revealed to be titled Strike Lightningscheduled to come out sometime during Fall later in the Young Bond: Shoot to Kill. There was also a moderately successful James Bond Jr. John Gardnerwho had written fourteen original novels and two novelisations featuring the adult Bond, was also critical of the series prior to the release of the first book. He stated:. It's just the last desperate attempt to Young Bond: Shoot to Kill in a new audience. The films have little to do with the Bond we used to know, and now the books are going the same way. Higson, for his part, has been on record as stating that he intends to stay true to the backstory Ian Fleming created for Bond, though this in many ways contradicts the popular James Bond: The Authorized Biography of by John Pearson. When SilverFin was published in Young Bond: Shoot to Killreviews of the novel were good. This, in Young Bond: Shoot to Kill to a large marketing campaign in the United Kingdom, elevated SilverFin to the number eight spot on the Booksellers list of best-selling children's books in the UK. A second book in the Young Bond series, Blood Feverwas released on 5 January in the UK having been delayed from an initial release in October The book reached the number one spot on the Booksellers list of best-selling children's books in the UK in its second week of release and held Young Bond: Shoot to Kill spot for eleven weeks. Double or Diethe third book in the series, was released in the UK on 4 Januaryhaving had its title announced the day before. The title was voted on in a national poll on the official Young Bond website; the other two titles to choose from were N. After the first three days of Double or Die' s release it took the number two spot on the Booksellers list of best-selling children's books in the UK and number fourteen in the overall UK Top 50 list. A week later it had climbed to number one on the children's list and the number twelve spot overall. As of March the Young Bond novels have sold over 5 million copies and have been translated into 25 languages. In June it was announced that the Young Bond series would be published by Miramax Books, then still a part of Disney. The deal's price tag was not disclosed, but was understood to be in the six-figure range. In the game, players around the world use a range of media, including the Young Bond books themselves and the World Wide Web, to complete the missions and influence the outcome of the game. Charlie Higson took part in a live online event that concluded the game on 8 October Walker illustrations have also been used on the covers of the U. The book was written by Charlie Higson and illustrated by renowned comic book artist Kev Walker. Due to the success of SilverFin and Blood FeverYoung Bond: Shoot to Kill has been interested in adapting these novels to film; however, Ian Fleming Publications and Charlie Higson have said they hope to release a few more books before possibly considering it. • Imperial Nostalgia: Victorian Values, History and Teenage Fiction in Britain
RONALD PAUL Imperial Nostalgia: Victorian Values, History and Teenage Fiction in Britain In his pamphlet, The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte, on the seizure of French government power in 1851 by Napoleon’s grandson, Louis, Karl Marx makes the following famous comment about the way in which political leaders often dress up their own ideological motives and actions in the guise of the past in order to give them greater historical legitimacy: The tradition of all the dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brain of the living. And just when they seem engaged in revolutionizing themselves and things, in creating something that has never yet existed, precisely in such periods of revolutionary crisis they anxiously conjure up the spirits of the past to their service and borrow from them names, bat- tle-cries, and costumes in order to present the new scene of world history in this time-honoured disguise and this borrowed language.1 One historically contentious term that has been recycled in recent years in the public debate in Britain is that of “Victorian values”. For most of the 20th century, the word “Victorian” was associated with negative connotations of hypercritical morality, brutal industrial exploitation and colonial oppression. However, it was Mrs Thatcher who first gave the word a more positive political spin in the 1980s with her unabashed celebration of Victorian laissez-faire capitalism and patriotic fervour. This piece of historical obfuscation was aimed at disguising the grim reality of her neoliberal policies of economic privatisation, anti-trade union legislation, cut backs in the so-called “Nanny” Welfare State and the gunboat diplomacy of the Falklands War.

Brown Student Engagement Hours: 120 (standard 3- credit BA course) Lectures: 22.5 Seminar / Tutorials: 22.5 Independent / Guided Learning: 75 Semester: Summer Credits: 12 UK CATS credits 6 ECTS credits 3 US credits Course Description: James Bond (007) is a global brand: for sixty years a hugely popular cultural icon, with around half of the planet having seen a Bond film. Bond is a quintessentially British creation; yet his adventures were set on a global stage and reflect the contemporary political milieu – from fighting communists with his American cousins to today battles with terrorists, media barons and assorted megalomaniacs. This course is therefore also a study of the second half of the twentieth century – particularly the special relationship between the US and the UK. Equally relevant are issues related to branding, class, race, gender, product placement and popular music. Students will visit key historical sites related to the history of Bond, using locations (particularly in London) as well as both the books and films as a means to study international history, as well as cultural and political change. Special note: site visits may change subject to availability and faculty expertise. Prerequisites: ARW 4195 or GEP 4180 or HST 3205 Aims and Objectives: To introduce students to contemporary, post-1945 international history through the character of James Bond. Richmond, the American International University in London November 2015 To place the Bond character within a wider cultural, political and historical framework.

HÀNWÉN AND TAIWANESE SUBJECTIVITIES: A GENEALOGY OF LANGUAGE POLICIES IN TAIWAN, 1895-1945 By Hsuan-Yi Huang A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Curriculum, Teaching, and Educational Policy—Doctor of Philosophy 2013 ABSTRACT HÀNWÉN AND TAIWANESE SUBJECTIVITIES: A GENEALOGY OF LANGUAGE POLICIES IN TAIWAN, 1895-1945 By Hsuan-Yi Huang This historical dissertation is a pedagogical project. In a critical and genealogical approach, inspired by Foucault’s genealogy and effective history and the new culture history of Sol Cohen and Hayden White, I hope pedagogically to raise awareness of the effect of history on shaping who we are and how we think about our self. I conceptualize such an historical approach as effective history as pedagogy, in which the purpose of history is to critically generate the pedagogical effects of history. This dissertation is a genealogical analysis of Taiwanese subjectivities under Japanese rule. Foucault’s theory of subjectivity, constituted by the four parts, substance of subjectivity, mode of subjectification, regimen of subjective practice, and telos of subjectification, served as a conceptual basis for my analysis of Taiwanese practices of the self-formation of a subject. Focusing on language policies in three historical events: the New Culture Movement in the 1920s, the Taiwanese Xiāngtǔ Literature Movement in the early 1930s, and the Japanization Movement during Wartime in 1937-1945, I analyzed discourses circulating within each event, particularly the possibilities/impossibilities created and shaped by discourses for Taiwanese subjectification practices. I illustrate discursive and subjectification practices that further shaped particular Taiwanese subjectivities in a particular event.
