In Hawkins was included in the FIA list of graded drivers, an elite group of 27 drivers who by their achievements were rated the best in the world. Sports car racing is a form of motorsport road racing which utilizes sports cars that have two seats and enclosed wheels. They may be purpose- built Prototype or related to road-going models. The range was powered by a series of American-designed and built engines modified for racing. The GT40 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four consecutive times, from toincluding a finish in Lola built the chassis, which were typically powered by large American V8s. Hawkins was hugely popular and known as Hawkeye ; the son of a gentleman of the cloth he was a colourful character with a wide colourful vocabulary. Run sinceit is widely considered to be one of the most important and prestigious automobile races in the world and, with the Indianapolis and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, forms the Triple Crown of Motorsport. The circuit has been called "an exceptional location of glamour and prestige".
