    Sari - International Journal of the Malay World and Civilisation Abu28(2) Talib (2010): Ahmad 3 - 343 Museum Preservation and Conservation of Cultural Heritage in the Northern Region of Peninsula Malaysia1 ABU TALIB AHMAD ABSTRACT This article discusses myriad of museums that are located in the northern region of peninsula Malaysia and their efforts in the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage. The study adopts the historical approach but with a tinge of cultural anthropology while the research methodology is based on museum visits, a scrutiny of publications and pamphlets issued by museums and discussion with those closely associated with museums. Besides the dominance of Malay culture museum efforts of preservation and conservation of cultural heritage including royal ceremonies are selectively undertaken. Certain aspects of Malay culture are marginalized just like the cultural heritage of other ethnic groups. Then there is competition within and among museums. This competition is an extension of the political competition which had existed since 1957. Key words: Museums, preservation, conservation, historical approach, cultural heritage, Malay culture, selective, marginalized, competition ABSTRAK Makalah ini membincangkan pelbagai muzium yang terdapat di utara Semenanjung Malaysia serta usaha pemulihan dan pemuliharaan warisan budaya yang mereka jalankan. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan sejarah dan antropologi budaya sementara kaedah kajian pula merangkumi lawatan muzium, penelitian ke atas penerbitan dan risalah yang dikeluarkan oleh muzium serta perbincangan dengan mereka yang berkaitan dengan muzium. Kajian mendapati selain berpaksi kepada budaya Melayu pemulihan dan pemuliharaan warisan budaya termasuk adat istiadat diraja dilakukan secara terpilih.     KEMANUSIAAN Vol. 22, No. 2, (2015), 23–45 Museums in the Northern Region of Peninsula Malaysia and Cultural Heritage1 ABU TALIB AHMAD Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia [email protected] Abstract. Museums in Malaysia, including those in the northern region, have become closely associated with nation building seeking to project commonly shared experiences besides their increasing attachment to the tourism industry. The cultural displays in these museums are done in line with the national culture policy that favours Malay and other indigenous cultures that were not contradictory to Islamic precepts. This essay scrutinises 28 general and specialised museums located in the northern region of peninsula Malaysia, covering the states of Perlis, Kedah, Penang and northern Perak. These museums are under the administration of the Department of Museums, state governments and other government departments, besides private organisations and individuals. A few of the more important ones are discussed in details while the natures of their main exhibits are tabulated for easy reference. The discussion looks at the visitor numbers to these museums and provides possible reasons for museum attractions to visitors. The more substantiated discussion focuses on the region's distinctive performing arts like boria, mek mulong, hadrah, the cultural side of the Perak Man and paddy cultivation, and Chinese Peranakan culture in the museums. These include the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park in Langkawi, the limestone caves of Perlis which had traces of human habitation and Neolithic culture dating back 3,000–4,000 years ago, and the archaeological sites of the Bujang Valley and Lenggong Valley.
