The Northern Region is the destination for leisure pursuits. Within it lie the internationally famous Pangkor Laut Resort, the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage City of Georgetown, Asia’s first Geopark – Langkawi and the country’s only semi-deciduous rainforest at the Perlis State Park. Wonderful surprises abound here and there are more than enough reasons to make it the perfect getaway. For a taste of intriguing cultures and exciting adventures, where else but the Northern Region? 3 PERAK Perak is situated along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia and covers an area of 21,000 sq km. Meaning silver in Malay, it was so named as the state is home to the Kinta Valley, which once contained the world’s richest tin deposits, drawing visitors from around the globe. Today, it captivates hearts with its intriguing cave temples, thriving virgin rainforests, delicious varieties of cuisine and of course, the renowned Pangkor Laut Resort. Its capital city is Ipoh, the City of Bougainvillaea. This island can be explored on foot or by vehicle and its surrounding turquoise warm waters are ideal for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and fishing. A short boat ride takes you to the privately-owned Pulau Pangkor Laut. Here, you will find the exclusive Pangkor Laut Resort, one of the world’s top small luxury resorts. Must do: • Savour fresh and delicious seafood • Watch boats being built at the boatyards • Sample seafood snacks • Go for a round-island trip The stone foundations of the Dutch Fort at Teluk Gedung were built in 1670, making this former Dutch stronghold more than 300 years old. Pangkor Information Centre Tel: 05 685 1078 6 ROYAL BELUM Gerik The pristine Royal Belum is nestled within the protected Belum Valley in Gerik. New species of trees and insects have been discovered in this 117,500-hectare virgin rainforest, which is also one of the few places in Malaysia where you can see the rare Rafflesia. Comprising a complex ecosystem, this state park is situated in the northern part of Lake Temengor and is a haven for mammals like the seladang, Asian Elephant, Malaysian Tiger and the endangered Sumatran Rhinoceros as well as birds such as the hornbills. The country’s first zoo, it features orang-utans, Malaysian Tigers, siamangs and many more in open-air enclosures with natural settings. The Night Safari includes a mini train ride that takes you through various parts of the zoo where you can watch nocturnal animals in action – feeding, hunting or just being playful. The lively chirpings of night creatures add to the exciting atmosphere. Located at the foothill of the Titiwangsa Range in Sungkai, the hot springs are believed to have positive effects on various ailments. While you are there, you can go for the open cold and hot pools or private pools. You can also sign up for the water reflexology courses or just take a walk around the beautiful garden and reflexology path. Must do: • Soak in the hot springs pools • Enjoy a soothing reflexology massage Opening hours: 8.00am - 9.00pm Tel: 05 438 8801 / 3 GALERI SULTAN AZLAN SHAH Kuala Kangsar The Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery was formerly known as Istana Hulu or Hulu Palace. An interesting combination of Asian and European architectural styles, the gallery mainly features the history and achievements of the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah. It also provides information on the history and genealogy of the Perak Sultanate and showcases replicas, photographs, automobiles as well as gifts that were given to the Sultan and his wife by Head of States from around the world. The gallery is located on Bukit Chandan about 1.5km from Kuala Kangsar town and just 500m from the famous icon, Istana Kenangan. Opening hours: 10.00am - 5.00pm Monday - Thursday 10.00am - 12.15, Friday 2.45pm - 5.00pm Tel: 05 777 5362 One of the exhibits, the Taming Sari dagger, is made of 20 metal composites, believed to be ,made from bolts holding the Holy Ka abah Gates in Mecca. 8 GAHARU TEA VALLEY Gopeng The Gaharu Tea Valley’s 300-acre plantation is located within the quaint little town of Gopeng. It has about 200,000 trees of the special 12-in-1 super hybrid Aquilaria SPP and other natural attractions that will leave you mesmerised.

    MISC. HERITAGE NEWS –March to July 2017 What did we spot on the Sarawak and regional heritage scene in the last five months? SARAWAK Land clearing observed early March just uphill from the Bongkissam archaeological site, Santubong, raised alarm in the heritage-sensitive community because of the known archaeological potential of the area (for example, uphill from the shrine, partial excavations undertaken in the 1950s-60s at Bukit Maras revealed items related to the Indian Gupta tradition, tentatively dated 6 to 9th century). The land in question is earmarked for an extension of Santubong village. The bulldozing was later halted for a few days for Sarawak Museum archaeologists to undertake a rapid surface assessment, conclusion of which was that “there was no (…) artefact or any archaeological remains found on the SPK site” (Borneo Post). Greenlight was subsequently given by the Sarawak authorities to get on with the works. There were talks of relocating the shrine and, in the process, it appeared that the Bongkissam site had actually never been gazetted as a heritage site. In an e-statement, the Sarawak Heritage Society mentioned that it remained interrogative and called for due diligences rules in preventive archaeology on development sites for which there are presumptions of historical remains. Dr Charles Leh, Deputy Director of the Sarawak Museum Department mentioned an objective to make the Santubong Archaeological Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2020. Under the so called Perak Amanjaya Development Plan, some of the things that we have tried to do are the same things that I believe many others here are concerned about: first, balanced development and economic distribution between the urban and rural areas by focusing on developing small towns; second, poverty eradication regardless of race or religion so that no one remains on the fringes of society or is left behind economically; and, third, youth empowerment. Under the first one, the state identifies viable small- and medium-size companies which can operate from small towns. These companies are to be working closely with the state government to boost the economy of the respective areas.

    Eco-Architecture VII 1 THE ENVIRONMENT AND FENG SHUI APPLICATION IN CHEONG FATT TZE MANSION, PENANG, MALAYSIA AZIZI BAHAUDDIN & TEH BOON SOON School of Housing, Building and Planning, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia ABSTRACT Feng Shui, literarily translated as wind and water, forms part of the Chinese traditional architecture theory. The philosophy aims to achieve harmonious equilibrium among nature, buildings and people. It continues to be used in dwelling site selections and layout of buildings as well as in the environmental planning, especially in the Form School Feng Shui school of thought. It focuses on site analysis, landscapes and building placements with emphasis on designing with nature and the environment. This Feng Shui approach can be traced in the building design of the Peranakan style architecture of Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, a unique architecture in George Town, Penang. It is a mix of Chinese, Malay and colonial building styles. Unfortunately, this mansion has not been verified with the Feng Shui approach in relating the architecture with nature, despite a claim that was made of its application and for other buildings of the same style. This study addresses the cultural sensitivity of this architecture as a case study in embracing nature for its Feng Shui application. Qualitative analysis was employed to determine whether the design of this mansion corresponded well with favourable architectural conditions placed in the environment as stated in the Form School approach. The method applied included measured drawings, ethnography study of the Peranakan culture, interviews with identified Feng Shui masters and the mansion’s owners. The mansion’s architectural design conformed to the philosophy adapted from the Form School approach, especially in the architectural language.
