  • Towards a Better Investment in the Rights of the Child by Sister Lucy Kurien Founder-Director, Maher, India
Towards a Better Investment in the Rights of the Child By Sister Lucy Kurien Founder-Director, Maher, India This submission1 is an outcome of a series of experiences of the author and practices brought into being by her in the course of her work as the head of an organization which she founded for the welfare of the destitute children and women. Maher, the name of the organization, meaning mother’s home in the local language, was founded in 1997 basically for sheltering and rehabilitating the destitute and abused women. It was however soon found that a woman, forsaken by her husband and relatives, hardly ever came alone. She almost invariably carried with her a child or two whose care and nurture too became a part of her own rehabilitation. As a result, Maher also, over the years, became a child care centre cum orphanage- the role it has played, we feel, in an exemplary way. In many ways Maher has been a unique institution. This uniqueness of its character has abundantly helped in the shaping of the personality of children under its care and creating a natural atmosphere for the protection of their fundamental rights. In fact it has helped Maher to go beyond the minimum needed for the protection of the rights of its children. The developmental aspect: The personal and social development of the child A system that dovetails needs and rights of children and women Over the years, Maher has evolved a unique system that takes care of a child’s emotional and economic needs. As a home that works for rehabilitation of both women and children, it has evolved a system of a chain of children’s homes that has successfully dovetailed the needs and rights of children and women both.

  • Maher News Jan to June 2020
TO NEW G N L I I M F S A I oa H E h E m R R _ MAHER MAHER Issue 49 ¦ January - June 2020 Maher has helped 4423 Poor Families in Shirur, Havili Taluka with food grains A Word from the Sister The world is going through a terrible time. The coronavirus pandemic has claimed more than five lakh lives worldwide. At the time of writing, the number in India has already exceeded 20000. We do not know where the virus is going to lead us to. It has truly levelled down every one of us- poor and wealthy, ugly and handsome, illiterate and learned, wise and dumb, black and white, powerful and weak, god-fearing and wicked…. At Maher we felt especially responsible with its 1,500 residents ranging from the new born infants to 80+. We right away directed our office to issue precautionary instructions to all our residents. We are fortunate that things are fine so far and we hope they would be so in days to come too. The lockdown has aggravated feelings of loneliness especially among the elderly and the infirm. People who were already lonely are probably going through the worst patch of their life today- loneliness coupled with prospects of infection and death. This is a unique illness where the victims spend days together under the shadow of an uncertain future without their dear ones around to share their concern and fears. I suppose we need to safeguard ourselves with the Four Walls of Protection. The immunity and physical strength which I call the First Wall of Protection is of course of the utmost importance in this situation.

N TO EW G N L I M I A F S H I oa E h E m R R _ MAHER MAHIssue 46E ¦ July - DecemberR 2018 ON HER BIRTHDAY SISTER LUCY PAYS TRIBUTE TO CHHATRAPATI SHRI SAMBHAJI MAHARAJ & CLEANS THE SAMADHI HERSELF Mr. Bernhard Girardi & Prof. Dr. Josef Hainz passed away. Maher is very grateful to both benefactors. A Word from the Sister Welcome yet to this another edition of Maher newsletter. Whenever I have received an honour, I have always felt it to be an acknowledgement of the efforts and hard work that my colleagues at Maher have put in toward the final goal of Maher: the end of destitution. It makes me more humble and yet more determined in Maher work. I feel happy that these honours enhance the value of the work Maher has been doing and eventually enable it to reach more people in distress. Of the two major honours I have received over last six months, I felt particularly proud receiving the Neerja Bhanot Award. What a brave woman Neerja was to have sacrificed her life at the age of just 22 years for the sake of saving others' lives! She paid the highest price performing her duty and became a loadstar for everyone of us. The Oooms honour placing me among the 100 inspiring people in the world was flattering but made me happy that the work my Maher colleagues have been doing has received yet another international recognition. Attending the historic Parliament of the World's Religions meet at Toronto was a real moment of pride.

chri ANNUAL REPORT 2008 2009 COMMONWEALTH HUMAN RIGHTS INITIATIVE B-117, SECOND FLOOR, SARVODAYA ENCLAVE, NEW DELHI – 110 017, INDIA T +91 11 43180200; F + 91 11 26864688 [email protected]; www.humanrightsinitiative.org Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) is an independent, non-partisan, international non-governmental organisation, mandated to ensure the practical realisation of human rights in the countries of the Commonwealth. In 1987, several Commonwealth professional associations founded CHRI. They believed that while the Commonwealth provided member countries a shared set of values and legal principles from which to work and provided a forum within which to promote human rights, there was little focus on the issues of human rights within the Commonwealth. The objectives of CHRI are to promote awareness of and adherence to the Commonwealth Harare Principles, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other internationally recognised human rights instruments, as well as domestic instruments supporting human rights in Commonwealth member states. Through its reports and periodic investigations, CHRI continually draws attention to progress and setbacks to human rights in Commonwealth countries. In advocating for approaches and measures to prevent human rights abuses, CHRI addresses the Commonwealth Secretariat, member governments and civil society associations. Through its public education programmes, policy dialogues, comparative research, advocacy and networking, CHRI’s approach throughout is to act as a catalyst around its priority issues. The nature of CHRI’s sponsoring organisations* allows for a national presence and an international network. These professionals can also steer public policy by incorporating human rights norms into their own work and act as a conduit to disseminate human rights information, standards and practices.

  • 2016 US Maher Friends Newsletter
1 u.s. maher friends March 1, 2016 Greetings Friends, 2015 year was a very special year for The Howley Foundation, and 2016 is off to a great start. We are happy to announce The Howley Foundation (THF) has changed its name to US Maher Friends. This transition began several months ago, and is now official. THF’s collaboration with other US supporters of Maher was growing so beautifully, and it felt important to change our nonprofit’s name to best reflect our mission. Brenda Howley continues in the role of Executive Director, while co- founder Mikaela Keepin is the nonprofit’s Director. In 2015 Sister Lucy, the founder and director of Maher, spent five autumn weeks traveling to 11 states to attend conferences, give talks and meet with donors. Led by USMF, supporters from these 11 states collaborated to organize and orchestrate the tour. The tour was fantastic. The Howley Foundation’s mission has not changed. Since 2012 Maher has been THF’s sole beneficiary. US Maher Friends raises funds for Maher and also serves as a conduit for all money going from the US to Maher. We send 100% to Maher and donations are tax-deductible. USMF also spreads awareness about Maher and raises money to support Maher youth in international educational opportunities. Learn more about all of this below in our first newsletter! Maher continues to astound us with their amazing work, and we continue to be honored to help support their mission. Thanks to all of you for helping to make 2015 so great for USMF.
