Margaret Fuller: the Self-Made Woman in the Nineteenth Century

The article examines Fuller’s work and life in the context of 19th century American culture and social determinants influencing women’s lives. From a very early age, Fuller perceived her role in society different from the role designed for her as a bio- logical girl by the cultural model of the times she lived in. The article focuses on Fuller’s achievements in the context of the self-made man/woman concept. Hutchison A Strong Radical Woman and the Philanthropic Men Who Knew Her Can two people, at least one of whom does not fit neatly into any mold, be used to exemplify contrasting social forces? In this delightful book, David Wagner proposes to do just that with Franklin Benjamin Sanborn and Annie Sullivan Macy, even as he points out the pitfalls of such an approach. The theme of the book is social status and the worldviews that go with it. Disability--Sullivan’s visual impairment and Helen Keller’s deaf-blindness--is responsible for the contacts between Sanborn and Sullivan, but their differences (and commonalities) derive from other sources. Sanborn (1831-1917)--considerably better known in his own time than today--was a younger contemporary of the New England transcendentalists. An admirer of Samuel Gridley Howe (1801-76), Sanborn deeply respected Howe’s work as the first director of the Perkins School for the Blind. Sanborn joined Howe as a member of the “Secret Six” funders of John Brown and, after Brown’s failed 1859 raid at Harper’s Ferry, the two men together avoided arrest by fleeing to Canada. -
American Heritage Day
American Heritage Day DEAR PARENTS, Each year the elementary school students at Valley Christian Academy prepare a speech depicting the life of a great American man or woman. The speech is written in the first person and should include the character’s birth, death, and major accomplishments. Parents should feel free to help their children write these speeches. A good way to write the speech is to find a child’s biography and follow the story line as you construct the speech. This will make for a more interesting speech rather than a mere recitation of facts from the encyclopedia. Students will be awarded extra points for including spiritual application in their speeches. Please adhere to the following time limits. K-1 Speeches must be 1-3 minutes in length with a minimum of 175 words. 2-3 Speeches must be 2-5 minutes in length with a minimum of 350 words. 4-6 Speeches must be 3-10 minutes in length with a minimum of 525 words. Students will give their speeches in class. They should be sure to have their speeches memorized well enough so they do not need any prompts. Please be aware that students who need frequent prompting will receive a low grade. Also, any student with a speech that doesn’t meet the minimum requirement will receive a “D” or “F.” Students must portray a different character each year. One of the goals of this assignment is to help our children learn about different men and women who have made America great. Help your child choose characters from whom they can learn much. -

Anne Hutchinson Women were an important part of the workforce in the English colonies. However, they rarely helped bring about political change. One exception was a woman named Anne Hutchinson. Anne Hutchinson and her husband, William, settled in Boston in 1634. She worked as a midwife helping to deliver babies. Hutchinson was both intelligent and religious. John Winthrop, the governor of Massachusetts called her “a woman of ready wit and bold spirit”. It would be her bold spirit, however, which would bring her trouble with the Puritan officials. RE-MEMBERING NORRIDGEWOCK STORIES AND POLITICS OF A PLACE MULTIPLE A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Ashley Elizabeth Smith December 2017 © 2017 Ashley Elizabeth Smith RE-MEMBERING NORRIDGEWOCK STORIES AND POLITICS OF A PLACE MULTIPLE Ashley Elizabeth Smith, Ph. D. Cornell University 2017 This dissertation is an ethnography of place-making at Norridgewock, the site of a famous Wabanaki village in western Maine that was destroyed by a British militia in 1724. I examine how this site is variously enacted as a place of Wabanaki survivance and erasure and ask, how is it that a particular place with a particular history can be mobilized in different and even contradictory ways? I apply Annemarie Mol’s (2002) analytic concept of the body multiple to place to examine how utilize practices of storytelling, remembering, gathering, producing knowledge, and negotiating relationships to variously enact Norridgewock as a place multiple. I consider the multiple, overlapping, coexistent, and contradictory enactments of place and engagements with knowledge that shape place-worlds in settler colonial nation-states. Rather than taking these different enactments of place to be different perspectives on or versions of place, I examine how these enactments are embedded in and shaped by hierarchies of power and politics that produce enactments of place that are at times parallel and at times contradictory. Place-making is especially political in the context of settler colonialism, where indigenous places, histories, and peoples are erased in order to be replaced (Wolfe 2006; O’Brien 2010). -

Exploring Boston’s Religious History It is impossible to understand Boston without knowing something about its religious past. The city was founded in 1630 by settlers from England, Other Historical Destinations in popularly known as Puritans, Downtown Boston who wished to build a model Christian community. July 2021 In This Issue: President's Message Send Your Information Affiliate Activities We Remember Notable Birthdays Calendar of Events Change. After the past year and a half, most likely all of us have a new perspective on change and everything it connotes. Change can be frightening, uncomfortable and heartbreaking. It also can be rejuvenating, uplifting and necessary. One of the biggest changes NFPW found it necessary to make during the COVID-19 pandemic was to shift the 2021 conference from an in-person meeting to a virtual event. It was a tremendous leap of faith. How would members respond? How would potential speakers respond? Could we make the technology work? What resulted was rejuvenating and uplifting, due in no small measure to the efforts of the conference host affiliate—Arkansas Press Women—and their commitment to what turned out to be a two-year odyssey to get from Baton Rouge in 2019 to Little Rock in 2021. And what a conference it turned out to be! The sessions were interesting, engaging and moving. We heard from such remarkable women as Michelle Duster, the great- granddaughter of African-American journalist and activist Ida B. Wells, and Elizabeth Eckford, one of nine African-American students who integrated Little Rock’s Central High School in 1957. I hope those of you who heard them speak were as inspired as I was. We also had a chance to learn the latest about drones, podcasting, social media strategies, writing memoirs, being a food and travel writer, and misinformation on the Internet—all relevant and important topics in today’s rapidly changing media world.
