Highlights for the 2003 Season 2019 Season Highlights Oracle Park: The Giants and Oracle announced in January that they signed a 20-year partnership providing Oracle with the naming rights to the ballpark through 2038. Highlights of the agreement include: Ballpark Capital & Technology Upgrades: Oracle will partner with the Giants to invest in a number of improvements to Oracle Park over the next five years, including the addition of a new state-of-the-art scoreboard and signage. The Giants and Oracle will also utilize emerging technologies to create unique experiences for fans. Community Programs: The Giants and Oracle will develop a signature community outreach program. Hospitality and Experiential: Together Oracle and the Giants will build unique sports hospitality experiences to engage Oracle customers and members of the community. Oracle and the Giants have a longstanding partnership. Together the two companies have embarked on numerous promotional, advertising and philanthropic efforts. For example, for the past 15 years, Oracle sponsored the Giants Community Spotlight, an in-game scoreboard feature, which raises awareness for issues and causes important to the Bay Area community and highlights the impactful work being done by many of the Giants’ non-profit partners. Oracle has been a proud sponsor of Giants Enterprises - the wholly-owned subsidiary of the Giants responsible for the non-baseball and special events for the organization. The annual Oracle OpenWorld CloudFest concerts have been hosted at the park for the past three years. Giants Enterprises also delivered the Official Spectator Experience for the 34th America's Cup held in San Francisco in 2013, which Oracle Team USA won. Promotions & Special Events Below are some of the highlighted promotions and special events for the 2019 season. Please see the Giants pocket schedule or go to sfgiants.com for a complete listing. Events Home Opener: The Giants will begin the 2019 season campaign at home when they face the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, April 5. This day, steeped in tradition, will be the final home opener for beloved Manager Bruce Bochy who announced at the start of Spring Training that this will be his final season as the skipper of the Giants. He will retire at the end of the season after 13 years with the club and 25 consecutive years as a big-league manager. The Giants will begin the season-long retirement celebration by honoring the Three- Time World Series Champion Manager during the home opener. The organization will also pay tribute during the pre-game ceremony and throughout the game to some special Forever Giants who recently passed away, including Broadcaster Hank Greenwald, Former Manager Frank Robinson, Former Managing General Partner Peter A. Magowan and Hall of Famer Willie McCovey. The team will also honor the first responders of the devastating California wildfires that destroyed many parts of the state and remember those who lost their lives and those who were significantly impacted as they begin to rebuild. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 12:45 p.m. Tickets for Opening Day are still available at sfgiants.com/tickets. Wall of Fame: The Giants will honor former President and Managing General Partner Peter A. Magowan on the Giants Wall of Fame. Magowan, who passed away in January at the age of 76, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer, will be the first non-player to join the 52 other Giants legends who are currently on the Wall. Bronze plaques honoring these players and their baseball contributions line the brick wall of Oracle Park along King Street for all Giants fans to enjoy. Videoboard: This season the game experience will be greatly enhanced for the fans with the installation of a brand new videoboard in center field. The $10 million project represents the largest single capital improvement the Giants have undertaken at the park since it opened in 2000. This Mitsubishi Electronic Diamond Vision display will be the park’s third, replacing the most recent board, which debuted in 2007, and had become the fifth-smallest and second-oldest in Major League Baseball. The new board will be 4 more than three times as large (153.28’ wide by 70.87’ high) with twice the resolution (4,672 x 2,160 pixels) of the former display, which will dramatically enhance the ballpark experience by providing greater access to content in the form of more in-depth advanced statistics and higher-quality video. It will also be the first “4K” display in MLB. The Cloud Club: The Cloud Club will be located on the Suite Level and is a brand new way to experience premium sports entertainment at Oracle Park for corporate clients. This all-inclusive lounge welcomes those looking for a lively and immersive environment to enjoy the game, and a place to host guests where they can grow connections and relationships. It provides a flexible and simple way to entertain clients, colleagues or friends. The Cloud Club will be a place where the arts and culture of San Francisco are celebrated and woven into the atmosphere and experience from the décor to food and beverage offerings. The Club was created from the merging of six existing suites and will feature an interior bar, lounge seating and TV monitors. There are 60 exterior, leather, high back, heated seats. The Club’s capacity is between 140 and 150. The Waterfront: This new space has been designed to create more social gathering spots for fans and to better improve the connection of Scoreboard Plaza back to the field. The destination was created by removing the last few rows of the bleachers under the scoreboard opening the views to the field as well as improving the eastern views from inside the park out to the Bay and beyond.

Chapter One The Decline and Fall of the Pirates Family The 1980–1985 Seasons ♦◊♦ As over forty-four thousand Pirates fans headed to Three Rivers Sta- dium for the home opener of the 1980 season, they had every reason to feel optimistic about the Pirates and Pittsburgh sports in general. In the 1970s, their Pirates had captured six divisional titles, two National League pennants, and two World Series championships. Their Steelers, after decades of futility, had won four Super Bowls in the 1970s, while the University of Pittsburgh Panthers led by Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett added to the excitement by winning a collegiate national championship in football. There was no reason for Pittsburgh sports fans to doubt that the 1980s would bring even more titles to the City of Champions. After the “We Are Family” Pirates, led by Willie Stargell, won the 1979 World Series, the ballclub’s goals for 1980 were “Two in a Row and Two Million Fans.”1 If the Pirates repeated as World Series champions, it would mark the first time that a Pirates team had accomplished that feat in franchise history. If two million fans came out to Three Rivers Stadium to see the Pirates win back-to-back World Series titles, it would 3 © 2017 University of Pittsburgh Press. The offseason after the 1979 World Series victory was a whirlwind of awards and honors, highlighted by World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP) Willie Stargell and Super Bowl MVP Terry Bradshaw of the Steelers appearing on the cover of the December 24, 1979, Sports Illustrated as corecipients of the magazine’s Sportsman of the Year Award.

  • Campus Rallies for Grad Students
Campus Rallies for Grad Students By Mitch Horowitz "'he two-day graduate student work stoppage culminated Wednesday with one of the largest rallies Stony Brook has seen in recent years, drawing about 1000 people to the academic mall at its peak. The work stoppage, organized by the Graduate Student Organization (GSO), forced the cancellation of a number of classes, labs, and plenary sessions Tuesday and Wednes- day. Of the 900 teaching assistants and graduate assistants at Stony Brook, about 700 participated in the stoppage, according to GSO officials. The GSO has demanded a hike in the minimum $6000 yearly graduate stipend to $8000, lower child care rates, a univerity health insurance plan, and the right to unionize. The GSO has requested, with the support of the University Senate (see related story) that the administration spend half of the Graduate Research Initiative (GRI), a major upcoming state grant, to meet these demands. "The administration wants to take the GRI money, which was earmarked for graduate student standard of living, and put it into research," Debra Swoboda, a graduate student in Pyschology, told the crowd. University President John Marburger showed up about two hours into the noontime rally to speak and hear the tally of signatures on petitions supporting the GSO demands. 'There is no question in my mind that graduate students are inadequetely supported for their activities on this campus," he told the crowd. " ...
