Eric would often walk home at night with a claw hammer stuffed down his pants for protection. I really enjoyed this very open and frank autobiography which tells the life of the Eric Bristow - the Autobiography: The Crafty Cockney darts player I ever saw. I first fell in love with Brissie when i saw him make his televised debut, i was 13 he looked about 19 or I was hooked and followed him avidly whenever i could from that moment on. Having spent a lot of time with professional musicians there are real parallels in this book which i totally identify with. I can also see why Brissie had the same relationship issues that so many pro musicians also suffer. Seems to me you need to be the same mindset to make it really work. When the other half is not, these women always then seem Eric Bristow - the Autobiography: The Crafty Cockney be really needy and whiney and demanding instead of getting on with something that gives them an interest to focus on and provides them independence as well. Such females would annoy the hell out of me also and I would never last with such mentality and selfishness either, male or female, I would get the hell out. Relationships aside Eric's autobiography is exactly as I expected having met him at Jolees in Stoke when I was 18 and he is in the book exactly like the man I met, adored and followed. He is arrogant, cocky, full of himself, no Angel as a teen or a pro and he has a real sense of humour, but a background of Stoke Newington that means he can hold his own as well and don't Eric Bristow - the Autobiography: The Crafty Cockney this guy too far. This is a very entertaining read and very amusing at times. His best scores were not all on a dart board either. Like many bands and probably Eric Bristow - the Autobiography: The Crafty Cockney professionals where groupies are concerned if it's there and it's offered on a plate you don't say no. Eric lived life in the fast lane. Eric also made Darts the sport it now is. He made legions of fans and a few plus enemies which was because he was the best, knew it and wasn't ashamed to admit it. Very American thinking, no wonder they loved him there. I would really recommend this. Eric was a petty thief as a young teen and Darts was his salvation. I've also known musicians from similar situations so i feel a real empathy for how it could have been were he not the brash but Eric Bristow - the Autobiography: The Crafty Cockney player and pro himself. His early death is a really sad day for darts and for all of us who loved him. Buy this book and see for yourself we have lost one hell of a sporting great. RIP Eric, I will truly miss you. View 2 comments. The best autobiographies are not always by people that you admire. Often the best biogs are actually written by those celebrities who have courted controversy throughout their careers and are not always the most liked. Eric Bristow certainly falls into this camp; undoubtedly one of the most famous and acclaimed dart players of all time, but he does not always come across well. But, is that not why the book is fun? Bristow grew up in a poor area of London, when it was still poor. Many of his childhood friends are in jail or dead, but through his skill with the arrows, he found a way out. Although you can take the man out of Hackney, Hackney never really left this man. Bristow took his upbringing onto the oche with him and that it what his made him a champion, often intimidating his opponent before a dart was even thrown. Bristow is not ashamed at all of the man he is and is rightly proud of what he has achieved. Like his manner in real life, this Eric Bristow - the Autobiography: The Crafty Cockney can be a little abrasive at times. In most cases this works brilliantly; his tales about a naughty youth makes the early chapters highly entertaining. The book is also great when he discusses his peak as a player. There are some great stories about the darts scene at the time; loads of practical jokes. Bristow is also happy to tell the reader about people he dislikes and why. This is always fun, if a little full on. It depends on your own stance whether you will be bothered by what he has to say, but his views on mental illness and passive smoking feel archaic Eric Bristow - the Autobiography: The Crafty Cockney best, dangerous at worst. He seems to lack empathy towards other people and this may make for a good read, but it can also be uncomfortable. A good autobiography Eric Bristow - the Autobiography: The Crafty Cockney transport you to a life far removed from your own; this is often Hollywood glamour or sporting heights. What you have here is a glimpse into a completely different lifestyle that not everyone will agree with, but at least Bristow has attacked it with gusto and gives the reader the unvarnished truth. Jan 24, Jason Cotton rated it really liked it. Well this is certainly an interesting read if you grew up watching darts in the eighties. Eric Bristow was by far the best darts player on the BDO circuit and his world titles alone speak volumes. This book examines both sides of him, the ruthless darts player and the subtler and calmer family man. He lifts the lid on some of the other players quirks and habits and a lot of the time this book got me smiling. There are also sad moments where he reflects on the mistakes Eric Bristow - the Autobiography: The Crafty Cockney made in his life and his Well this is certainly an interesting read if you grew up watching darts in the eighties. There are also sad moments where he reflects on the mistakes he made in his life and his family losses. From growing up in London to living in Stoke this book is a wonderful insight into Eric Bristow and the legend that was, is and always will be The Crafty Cockney. • Sporting Legends: John Lowe
SPORTING LEGENDS: JOHN LOWE SPORT: DARTS COMPETITIVE ERA: 1978 - 2008 John Lowe (born 21 July 1945 in New Tupton, Derbyshire) is an English darts player who was one of the main competitors who made darts such a huge spectator sport in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly in the United Kingdom. Lowe won the World Championship title in three different decades - 1979, 1987 and 1993. He was regarded as the gentleman of the game, but he was very much a bridesmaid figure behind Eric Bristow in the early days of darts' rise to prominence - in terms of results and charisma. He met Bristow six times in the World Championship in various semi-finals and finals and it wasn't until his fourth attempt (in the 1987 final) that he managed to overcome his great rival. His record against Bristow in majors was three wins and six defeats. Lowe achieved the ultimate feat in darts on 13 October 1984 during the World Matchplay tournament against Keith Deller when he managed a nine dart finish - the sport's equivalent of a hole-in-one in golf or a 147 break in snooker. This was the first time this had ever been accomplished by any darts player while being televised. For this, Lowe won £102,000. He went on to clinch the tournament. As well as his three world titles, Lowe also won two World Masters titles, two British Open titles and two British Matchplay championships, two World Cup Singles and three European Cup Singles Titles, as well as countless other titles around the world in a hugely successful career.

  • The Professionalisation of British Darts, 1970 – 1997
From a Pub Game to a Sporting Spectacle: The professionalisation of British Darts, 1970 – 1997 Leon Davis Abstract: Various sport scholars have noted the transition of sports from amateur leisure pastimes to professionalised and globalised media sporting spectacles. Recent developments in darts offer an excellent example of these changes, yet the sport is rarely discussed in contemporary sports studies. The only sustained theoretical research on darts focuses primarily on the origins of the sport in its nostalgic form as a working-class, pub taproom pastime in England. This article critically examines the transformation of darts from a leisurely game to a professional sport between the 1970s and the 1990s. The change was enabled by the creation of the British Darts Organisation (BDO) and the introduction of television broadcasting, which together fed a continual process of professionalisation. Initially, this article discusses both the concept of professionalisation and similar developmental changes in a selection of English sports. Following this, via selected interviews, documentary analysis and archival information, the reasons behind the split in darts are explicated, shedding light on how the BDO did not successfully manage the transformation and the sport split into two governing bodies, from which the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), the sport’s most successful organisation in the present day, has emerged to dominate the world of televised darts. Keywords: Darts, professionalisation, television, game, sport Introduction For much of the twentieth century, darts was a predominantly working-class game played by local people and top-ranked players in British pubs and social clubs. However, since the 1970s, the game has rapidly changed from a communal game into a sporting entertainment spectacle.

  • Raymond Van Barneveld
SPORTING LEGENDS: RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD SPORT: DARTS COMPETITIVE ERA: 1990 - PRESENT Raymond van Barneveld (born 20 April 1967 in The Hague, Netherlands), nickname Barney and The Man, is a professional darts player. He is a five time World Darts Champion, two time UK Open Champion and the Las Vegas Desert Classic Champion. From January to June 2008, he was the PDC world number one ranked player. His victory in the 2007 final, added to his four previous BDO Championships brought him level with Eric Bristow as a five-time world champion. He is the most successful Dutch darts player ever, and has a significant effect in putting the game of darts on the map in the Netherlands. Barneveld's first World Championship appearance came in 1991 playing in the Embassy World Championship at the Lakeside Country Club, but his first round match ended in a 0-3 defeat to Australian Keith Sullivan. He started to make some progress on the British Darts Organisation circuit, reaching the quarter-finals of the Belgian Open in September 1990 and the German Open in March 1991. His first semi-final came at the Swiss Open in June 1991. He failed to qualify in 1992, but made it back to Lakeside in 1993, which would be the last time that a unified World Championship would be staged. Barneveld lost in a close match 2-3 to John Lowe, who would go on to win the championship. SPORTING LEGENDS: RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD Barneveld’s 2007 World Title success over Phil Taylor was a sweet victory! Shortly after the 1993 World Final, the top players in the game at the time formed the World Darts Council (WDC, now the PDC) and left the BDO.

1 DR. DARTS’ NEWSLETTER Issue 93 December 2017 GOODBYE FREDDIE It’s that time of year when, as the old year ends and the new one approaches our thoughts are turned to the festive season and, of course, to the two world darts championships. Indeed I was going to write about them but then my thoughts turned to the loss of the world- renowned MC and Referee, Freddie Williams who died suddenly last month Freddie was 81 and spent over 35 years working as an MC/Referee for no less than three darts organisations, initially the National Darts Association of Great Britain (NDAGB), then the British Darts Organisation (BDO) and finally for the Professional Darts Corporation (from its very start when it was called the World Darts Council (WDC)) right up to the time he retired from the sport in 2006. Throughout a good deal of this time Freddie was involved with Essex County darts. Indeed at the recent home game between Essex and County Durham a one minute silence was observed in tribute to Freddie. He would have appreciated that. One of Freddie’s many claims to fame was that he called the first-ever televised nine-dart finish by John Lowe in the MFI World Matchplay Championship at Slough, Buckinghamshire on 13th October 1984. John Lowe later recalled that when the ninth dart went in “I heard caller Freddie Williams announce, as if from the next room, ‘Game!’, then ‘Ladies and gentlemen, history has been made here in Slough today.” It certainly had. After so many years devoted service to darts Freddie was inducted into the PDC Hall of Fame upon his retirement.

1 DR. DARTS’ NEWSLETTER Issue 89 August 2017 WORLD RECORD-BREAKING COLLECTION OF DARTS FLIGHTS TO BE SOLD Last month I was contacted by Christa, the wife of the legendary darts flights collector Freddy Olievier, informing me that Freddy is putting his record-breaking collection up for sale. I said that I would bring his decision to the attention of DDN readers to gauge interest. Freddy (pictured left in 1996) first made contact with me back in 1989 by letter from his home in Gullegem, Belgium, after he saw an article I had written about dart flights (a large composite darts flight made of brewery-related flights) in an issue of Darts Player 89 (a sister publication to Darts World magazine here in the UK). Freddy wrote: I am a flight collector for about ten years and have over 7,500 different flights. I read you story in Darts Player 89. I have many doubles flights. Is it possible to exchange some with your doubles? I collect all flights, old, new all shapes, colours etc. You collect flights with beer advertising? If you are interested let me know. I replied to Freddy in January 1989 stating that I was not a serious darts flight collector but was happy to send him some of my duplicate flights and that started exchanges of flights and correspondence which lasted a number of years and, of course, I started to properly collect darts flights. But my collection was never, ever, ever going to become anything like Freddy’s. By the late 1990s his collection of darts flights had become by far the largest on the planet with thousands of examples kept in numerous albums and boxes.

  • Jocky Wilson
SPORTING LEGENDS: JOCKY WILSON SPORT: DARTS COMPETITIVE ERA: 1978 - 1995 Top sportsmen can come in all shapes and sizes, and nobody proves that more than darts star Jocky Wilson. At 5ft 4ins and around 16 stone, he has shown that you don’t necessarily need the body of Hercules to become a world-beater. Born as one of 11 children in the Scottish town of Kirkcaldy, Jocky’s working life began as a coal miner. It is a measure of his success that at the end of the 1970’s he was on the dole, but five years later was earning more than £100,000 a year around the pubs and clubs circuit of professional darts. Jocky was quite a late starter in the game. “I did not even look at a dartboard until I was in my early twenties”, he admits. “My first real competitive match was because someone had to drop out”. Wilson got thrashed in that game, and it stung him into buying a board of his own and practising for hours on end. “I was not going to let myself get humiliated again”, he says. When Jocky is on the oche it is his distinctive throwing style which sets him apart from many of his contemporaries. Because of his lack of height he has to look up to the board and throw from the shoulder, rather than the elbow. SPORTING LEGENDS: JOCKY WILSON Jocky Wilson was from the old-school, and fully deserved his two World Titles. He is the first to admit that this was once a problem.
