  • Sporting Legends: John Lowe
SPORTING LEGENDS: JOHN LOWE SPORT: DARTS COMPETITIVE ERA: 1978 - 2008 John Lowe (born 21 July 1945 in New Tupton, Derbyshire) is an English darts player who was one of the main competitors who made darts such a huge spectator sport in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly in the United Kingdom. Lowe won the World Championship title in three different decades - 1979, 1987 and 1993. He was regarded as the gentleman of the game, but he was very much a bridesmaid figure behind Eric Bristow in the early days of darts' rise to prominence - in terms of results and charisma. He met Bristow six times in the World Championship in various semi-finals and finals and it wasn't until his fourth attempt (in the 1987 final) that he managed to overcome his great rival. His record against Bristow in majors was three wins and six defeats. Lowe achieved the ultimate feat in darts on 13 October 1984 during the World Matchplay tournament against Keith Deller when he managed a nine dart finish - the sport's equivalent of a hole-in-one in golf or a 147 break in snooker. This was the first time this had ever been accomplished by any darts player while being televised. For this, Lowe won £102,000. He went on to clinch the tournament. As well as his three world titles, Lowe also won two World Masters titles, two British Open titles and two British Matchplay championships, two World Cup Singles and three European Cup Singles Titles, as well as countless other titles around the world in a hugely successful career.

2009 BDO WINMAU WORLD MASTERS The 2009 BDO WINMAU WORLD MASTERS , in association with John Smith’s and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, will be played at The Spa Bridlington on September 4 th , 5 th & 6 th - with the last 16 in the Men’s World Masters enjoying extensive BBC TV coverage over the weekend of Saturday, September 5 th and Sunday, September 6 th . PAGE 2 The 2009 BDO Winmau World Masters will once again be the richest two-day tournament on terrestrial TV with record-breaking prize money, and the September dates have been agreed in order to provide the 2009 World Masters with the best possible scheduling times from BBC TV. They will also provide a longer gap between the World Masters and the BDO Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships, scheduled for nine consecutive days on BBC TV from January 2 nd to 10 th , 2010. “We are delighted that the BBC are screening the 36 th BDO Winmau World Masters on a weekend that will provide us with the optimum amount of airtime on both the Saturday and Sunday”, says Olly Croft, Managing Director of BDO Enterprises Ltd. “The Masters always enjoys excellent TV audiences. Last year it attracted an average audience of 1 million on the Saturday with a peak of 1.5m. On Sunday the average was 1.2m with a peak of 1.8m for the final. “We will be looking to build on those figures this year and, with the World Master (or standby player) gaining entry to the 2010 World Pro, there is an important and solid link between the BDO’s two top BBC televised majors.” Staged and promoted by the British Darts Organisation, the Winmau World Masters have been played in Bridlington since 2002 and will be returning to The Spa for the second year since its £20 million re-development.

  • The Hot Hand in Professional Darts Hans Jasper Klimas Student Number
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Master Degree in Economics from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics. The Hot Hand in Professional Darts Hans Jasper Klimas Student Number: 880 A Project carried out on the Master in Economics Program, under the supervision of: Professor Alexander Coutts 03.01.2017 The Hot Hand in Professional Darts Abstract This paper examines whether a hot hand in professional darts exists or the people’s belief in players performing better after experiencing recent success is a fallacy. By the means of five hot hand statistics, tested in an individual and pooled player analysis, I have found substantial evidence for the existence of the hot hand for the great majority of players. Players hit more often after previous hits than misses, their throw outcomes are clustered and hit streaks appear more often and are longer than expected. Concluding from these results, the economic relevance of the hot hand fallacy should be reconsidered. Keywords: Hot-Hand Fallacy, Hot-Hand Effect, Behavioral Economics 1. Introduction On May 24, 2010, professional darts player Phil Taylor was the first person to hit two nine-dart finishes twice in a single game leading him to the win of the Darts Premier League 2010 (The Guardian, 2010). A nine-dart finish is the perfect leg in the game of darts using only 9 darts, the fewest possible, to checkout from 501 to zero. It is extremely difficult to achieve and is considered as the highest single-game achievement in the sports of darts.
