I am an Honorary Research Fellow at Liverpool University. I am a fee-paid judge in the Mental Health Review Tribunal

I held various paid advisory and employed part-time posts at the Office of the UK Parliamentary Ombudsman and Health Service Ombudsman for England between 2007-2012; I was contracted to prepare a policy position paper in April 2013 and facilitate a roundtable of academics for the Ombudsman on 1 May 2013 in respect of the forthcoming inquiry; and I am in the scoping stage of a project jointly for the Parliamentary Ombudsman, the Financial Ombudsman Service and the Legal Ombudsman on options for future shared approaches to redress. I am a paid advisor to the Northern Ireland Ombudsman on a project relating to the investigation of complaints.

Professor Matthew Flinders

1. Economic and Social Research Council funded project ‘Shrinking the State’ [http://www.shrinkingthestate.org.uk/] has been examining the reform and governance of arm’s-length bodies since 2010. This independent research project has been undertaken with the support and co-operation of the Cabinet Office and has also fed into several National Audit Office reports.

2. I am a Director of a small registered company called ‘Understanding Politics’. This is really just an administrative and financial umbrella for any fees or payments I might receive for journalistic work, book royalties, speaking engagements, etc. but the company is not involved in political consultancy.

3. I am currently negotiating a number of television and radio projects with both ITV and the BBC but none of these documentary-based projects involve anything to do with the specialist topic of this inquiry. I also have no media work booked-in or scheduled to be broadcast during the period of this inquiry.
