  • THE POLITICS of SEXUALITY in the STORY of KING DAVID By
THE POLITICS OF SEXUALITY IN THE STORY OF KING DAVID by Erin E. Fleming A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland October 2013 © 2013 Erin E. Fleming All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Among the stories surrounding the most famous of biblical kings—David—are a number of episodes that contain sexual components. Aspects of the sexual can be found especially in the narratives of David’s reign but also to a certain extent in the accounts of his rise to power and the succession of his son Solomon. Though David is not always directly involved, the episodes involving sexuality are closely intertwined with the story of David’s kingship over Israel and Judah. The sustained recurrence of sexual episodes surrounding David suggests that sexuality should be considered a literary motif in the David story found in 1 Samuel 16-1 Kings 2. In this thesis, I provide a systematic treatment of sexuality in the narratives of David’s rise to power, his reign, and Solomon’s succession as presented in 1 Samuel 16-1 Kings 2. Specifically, I focus on sexuality and kingship by examining how sexuality relates to royal ideology and political pragmatism in the narratives surrounding the establishment of the Davidic dynasty. This study considers how the sexual episodes in 1 Samuel 16-1 Kings 2 function within the overall narrative of David and what they might suggest about cultural conceptions of gender, sexuality, and kingship in ancient Israel and Judah within their ancient Near Eastern cultural context.

  • [PDF] Sex and the Supremacy of Christ.346978.Int.Indd
This is the rare book that delivers more than it promises. Pick it up to learn about the true joy of sex: you will, and you’ll also learn about the joy of God. —Marvin Olasky, editor-in-chief, World magazine This book is a glorious start to forming a Christian mind that expresses delight in God’s gift of marital intimacy—a Christian mind that so desires to delight in that which God delights in, that it revels in rejecting the cheap substitutes pawned off on this passing age as true pleasure, and instead only finds satisfaction in what is purest and highest and noblest and best. The book considers the subject of human sexuality biblically, theocentrically, Christologically, and thus helps form a well- rounded Christian outlook on sex. — J. Ligon Duncan III, Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, MS, Moderator, General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America In a culture that’s desperately asking sex to be the alpha and omega, this book shows how sex is better when Christ is the Alpha and Omega. —Andrée Seu, Senior Writer, World magazine I cannot think of any gift of God that has been more abused and mis- used than that of sex. What was intended to be a stunning, pure, earthly picture of amazing heavenly, eternal realities, has been perverted into an alluring but false god that is in fact a grotesque caricature of the true God. The contributors to this volume have provided a refreshing, insightful, and much-needed treatment of this sacred subject, calling us to bring our thoughts and lives into captivity to the supremacy of Christ and to reflect our ravishment with our heavenly Bridegroom in our sexuality.

But since this event, I have often reflected on how many ways the Bible has been used in contemporary dis- cussions over policies regarding the family, marriage, and sexuality. As Latter-day Saints, we have the teachings of the living prophets to help guide us through these issues. But many potential allies and adversar- ies use the Bible centrally in their arguments about these topics. Since we count the Bible as scripture too, it might behoove us to stay up to speed on what people are claiming the Bible says. One voice in this matter who speaks with considerable clout is Harvard’s Michael Coogan, editor of the acclaimed Oxford Annotated Bible and author of a slim and handy volume, God and Sex: What the Bible Really Says, where he brings his training to bear to explain what the Bible’s authors and earliest readers likely saw as its message about the regulation of sex and family relations.

  • A Critique of American Evangelical Views of God and the Material
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Stirling Online Research Repository In the World but not of It: A Critique of American Evangelical Views of God and the Material A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED IN FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTERS OF PHILOSOPHY IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES SCHOOL OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES DIVISION OF LITERATURE AND LANGUAGES By Rebecca Lynne Hudson Stirling, United Kingdom July 2012 ii Abstract This thesis concentrates on normative Christian male conceptions of God and the physical realm embodied by women and sexuality especially as they relate to attitudes toward women and sexuality in contemporary American Evangelical Christianity. As a result of the work of feminist and body theologians, it can be seen that the normative framework surrounding God is one of complete disembodied hypermasculinity and the result is one of systematic exclusion of embodied humanity – specifically women and sexuality. In this thesis, I will be exploring how this duality has been negatively reinforced and perpetuated through significant historical theologians from Saint Augustine to the influential twenty-first century American Evangelical writer, theologian, and pastor, Joshua Harris. In this process, we will see that the situation of woman is perilous, as described by feminist philosopher, Simone deBeauvoir in The Second Sex. I propose that this situation is reinforced by the image of God – as a hypermasculine ideal – which is prevalent in normative Christian thinking. This idealised image is produced when the male theologian projects his discomfort with his own masculinity in terms of its unresolved relationship with both body and divine disembodied spirit onto God while simultaneously idealising woman so that he can see reflected in her subordination to him, his own subordination to the hypermasculine God.
